Cancelling a race placement

I have just had to cancel for an up and coming race, due to family illness. I wasnt sure what the right thing was about cancelling from races. Does one, just not show up, or can you transfer your details to another person. What is the correct way of doing things?

Are there any cases, where you can get your money back?

  • don't think you can get your money back, some races let you transfer to another person (you would need to find someone who wanted your place). Mostly, just don't turn up.

  • Most race organisers (I am one) won't give refunds. In our (Tadley Runners) races you can transfer your number to someone else provided you give us their details or carry over your entry to the following year's event.

  • Might help if you told us which race it was Ghostie?
  • This practice is fraught with pitfalls.

I ended up as 10th lady in a significant event once!

  • ben.we are talking about races that allow transfers and they are done with the organisers knowledge .....

what you did is totally swapping unofficially especially if its a bloke taking a womans number means some women miss out on prizes and trophies

to look at tghe terms and conditions.if nothing wrotten i would presume you just lose the money ...the majority would just not turn up unless they contact the organisers to try and wangle a refund etc

  • THanks. IT was gosport half by the way.
  • seren nos

I can reassure you that I am appropriately embarrassed by the incident.

  • Never known a f=refund. If it's a race which sells out it would be good form to advise as another runner might then get the place. Many races don't allow transfer, especially big ones which sell out as they expect a significant fall out anyway.

  • Well if it sells out, and anyone wants to do Gosport, then by all means contact me. I have signed up for the Hayling Island 10 miler for the week after. Actually looks like a nicer race.

Wanted to do one more race before the end of the year, but as with life, we sometimes have to cancel races. Like when a family member has suspected cancer in my case.

  • Ask the organiser? We give refunds on cancellations minus a small admin fee, or free transfers (we always sell out). Still get about 20% no shows, which is a shame when you have people desparate to enter.

  • I take it the family illness will have cleared up by the following weekend then? image

Contact the organiser - you may be able to defer/transfer.
