Nicest Medals

I know there's a monthly thread on whether or not medals are neccersery,

but if we consider that this is a thread for those of us who do like medals, which running events have given the nicest medals?

I don't have a great deal of medals to compare, but I like my Wycombe Half, and Silverstone Half ones.

What medals of note are there?

  • I'm not in favour of having medals no matter what - mostly they are cheap rubbish image

Of the medals that I have kept (very few), the Amsterdam half marathon is pretty good - shaped like the running track at the Olympic stadium (where it finishes), and not too big.

Many races seem to think bigger is better (eg. London Marathon).

I've also kept a few from French races.   The best British medal I've had was for the Burnham Beeches half a few years ago.

  • i looooove medals!big fan.best medals iv had are....great west run (2011), plymouth half (2012), taunton half (2012), torbay half (2012), british 10k (2012), bristol half (2012), great scottish run (2012) and indian queens half (2012)(my fave by a long way! i have a lot of lame ones that look very samey frome local 10k's so gunna stick with halfs in future

  • Brighton Marathon have been nice so far - different every year. And very nice ribbon as well.... if you like that sort of thing image

  • Best I've ever had is a hand made ceramic medal for the west witton fell race, with a ribbon made of a single strand of wool, really personal...the medal for those in the first three were painted black.

The Gosport half about 5 years ago was ace, very chunky.

  • I believe the ones from the Olympics are quite highly valued.

  • All the rock n roll runs are amazing just like most american medals
  • I do like that medal. image Where's Muttley when you need him, that will make him green. (unless he has one).

The Alf Shrubb Memorial has a really nice medal, and no it's not big, it's the smallest medal I have. It's a replica of a medal he won some when back.

  • great detail in that one

  • (awaits Muttley getting involved.....)

  • I am aware of this thread, just lurking image

That is a nice gong indeed, T.Mouse. I like.

My personal fave is the Indian Queens half marathon. Rectangular, heavy and in the colours of the flag of St Piran.

  • Muttley did you see the medal at indian queens from this year?was a beast!
  • Mine is from 2008. Must get down there to do that one again.

  • This year it wasnt made of glass unfortunately but made up for it in size.the size of my hand, gold and olympic and cornish symbols.muttley if you have done bracknell half more then once is it the same medal each year?hope so as want one and may do it next year if its the same as previous years
  • Here's my favourite from this year:

It's massive and weighs a ton. Looks great hanging on my wall.image

Edit: I didn't actually have to run 50 miles to get it. Race was laps of a 10 mile loop and as it was for charity rather than an official race, every participant got the same medal. I ran 20 which does make me feel a bit of a fraud. May have to get '20' engraved on it somewhere...

The Great Scottish Run's medal this year was a welcome change of design. I've done it for the last 10 years and have 10 medals that are identical apart from the year marked on them. Ditto the Women's 10K - all the bloody same looking!

This year I got identical medals from a 40 mile ultra and a new marathon. I don't mind that too much but prefer the original ones. Most interesting medal yet was a wooden one with the logo burned into it, for the D33 ultra in Aberdeen.

  • Phew looks like i timed my scottish run visit to perfection from the sound of it then.great race and would do again if i lived nearer.these movember medals look good and the fantasy island 50 also.at dartmoor vale you get the same medal if u do the 10k,half or full marathon.shame
  • I like the marathon du Medoc medal this year. The Thames meander was also a decent medal.

A friend and I compare medals to see which are the best from the races that's we've done
  • Hastings half is nice; you get a commemorative horse brass instead of a medal.

  • what you really need is the Hastings Marathon medal - the race has only ever been run twice a 100 years apart in 1908 and 2008.   so those of us who did it in 2008 have a pretty rare momento...

  • Ooh, nice! Not sure I'll still be running in 100 years' time, though. What was the route? Just two laps of the half, or more of the surrounding countryside?

  • I really like the horse brass image
  • The Longleat 10km lionshead medal is my favourite from a purely aesthetic point of view.

  • FB did you time improve much between each one image

  • Loon - go ferk yourself.....image

literatin - no it was a very different route to the 1/2.  roughly - Hastings centre/Alexander Park/The Ridge via Wiliam Parker School/Conquest Hospital/Battle/Catsfield/Ninfield/Sidley/Bexhill centre/Cooden/Bexhill seafront/Bulverhythe (via the shore path)/St Leonards/Hastings - finish at the start area.   not the same as the 1908 one but similarities - and relatively hilly.   and bloody cold on race day at 5C.
