Mouse im desperately worried about my supporting skills, its been a while since ive supported an Ironman all day. I'm worried I could be rusty and will let down those racing.
Is it to late to practise my shouting? is there enough time for my vocal chords to adapt or should I just rest?
Dear Barley
There are strategies that you can use to help with your supporting skills. You should ensure that you lubricate your throat throughout the day to ensure that your vocal chords are in full working order. I understand that something called 'lager' provides an excellent balance of nutrients required for such lubrication. As a back up plan, you could also get some supporting aids to help you (these are permitted in the supporting athletes rule book). Such items include whistles, bells, bongo drums and other noise making devices.
Whilst a taper is recommended for supporting most research demonstrates that 2 or 3 days should be sufficient with mild bursts of yelling during that time. Some people say concentrated efforts of singing loudly whilst driving enhance their shouting skills as they come towards their taper period.
Finally, I'm sure you won't be rusty, nor let anyone down. You have a deep endurance base of supporting over many years. The supporting skills are not easily lost.

What is better short sharp yells or long sustained waiing for IM distance supporting?
i am also worried about being to hot or cold should i wear full waterproofs or just a yellow and black mankini?

Hmm am now rethinking whether I'm brave enough to be a pirate, will get past the aid station alive? Also do I really trust you all with the contents of my special needs bag , or will I get to 80 miles to find you've snarfed the lot. But then the clue is in the name really. Pirates.
