Using a 310XT on a track

Can anyone offer me some advice on what settings to use when training drills on a track? i just started doing some track training for speed and i found the Garmin 310XT not that useful as i just needed something like elapsed time, or a stop watch. The last activity was:

2 mins fast

1 min slow

1 min fast

30 seconds slow

30 seconds fast

30 seconds slow


then back to the start and do that 8 times


My Garmin was showing heart rate, distance, and it was juming between three different screens continuously.
