What do you listen to whilst running?

Not sure if there is already a thread on this, but just curious as to what people like to listen to whilst running and what motivates you? image

My music taste is very eclectic generally and crosses many genres, but when running I love to stick on some trance and float away haha. Armin Van Buuren, Above and Beyond, Cosmic Gate etc, even better if you have a long hour mix from friends that DJ image

Interesting that the OP assumes music.

I like to listen to the peace and quiet and the rhythmic sounds of my feet and breathing as I bimble through the countryside. And to the birdsong, especially the cry of a Red Kite soaring overhead.

  • I also listen to my breathing and my feet.

  • Same as Muttley.  I don't listen to music while I'm running outside.

  • very occasionally a podcast or other spoken word, but I can't be bothered with all the faff getting wired up and strapped on.

  • +2 with Muttley & Wilks

(bar the Red Kite - not reached us yet)

  • Interesting answers image I used to not listen to music, but now I find it has the placebo effect of making me feel more motivated. It is very faffy getting the wires in the right place so they're not bouncing up and down hitting you in the face constantly!

  • I prefer to run without music.

  • Sometimes run with music sometimes without, but I find I have to be very careful what I listen to as my pace tends to fall in line with the beat of the music!

I occasionally whistle a tune, to check my breathing's still nice and easy.  image

  • depends.

on a short tempo run sometimes a little hip hop. or abba.

long runs I use audiobooks. moby dick at the moment.

but more often I open my ears to the sounds of nature. hobos puking, neds shouting abuse.

I'm with Muttley and the barking noise some mornings of muntjac deer

  • I'd love to have Red Kite's to listen to - but something as mundane as a Robin can make a lovely tune. So no, I don't listen to music when out (walking in my case) - a nice bit of peace and quiet does me a treat!

  • .. a wheezing noise.

  • I love the sound of the outdoors.  Much less boring than music that I've heard a dozen times already that week.

  • On longer runs I tend to listen to World Service radio, tuning in and out dependent on the view or the traffic.

  • I talk to the dog.
  • I have just down loaded Ministry of Sound 90s Anthems and it is totally awesome!!  not a single naff song on the whole album!

Mostly dance music but my shuffle has anything from Psy to Rolf Harris on it image

  • Radio 4 Extra, or Radio 4 depending on whats on.

  • The voices... Always the same...
  • Never listen to music whilst running but find it strange that during the Great North Run they have the "Nike boost zone" with speakers blaring out areobics type music for about 400 metres. Everyone gets a boost then slow down at the end of the zone!

  • It's because they want to get away from the racket as quickly as possible.
  • I listen to traffic.

It's a way of avoiding death by Transit.

  • Marathon Talk, Audiobooks, and lots of downloaded radio comedies / drama. I find it easy to hear around me with speech radio. Music tends to drown everything out for r
  • depeds on my mood, sometimes i run with nothing, sometimes with comedy podcasts, or music, i often check my own mix's when out running before i put them out for general download.

  • Like Muttley, I listen to the world around me. The kites don't hang around long enough - the buzzards and ravens chase them off. Occasionally, I run to the sound of posh people shooting pheasants.

  • last night i ran an extra 3 miles because I got engrossed in a novel and wanted to find out what happened next image

  • Nothing - or rather, I listen to the forest, the birds, the silence etc. Too much noise in the world during the rest of my day, I don't need any distractions from my running, just want some peace and quiet.

  • Among others,

    AC/DC, GNR, Aerosmith, Motorhead!!!!
