High Expectations

As this is my first year and I have taken on a lot, I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat or was in the same boat regarding training.

My swim plan starts with a total of 1500 metres swimming including drills and a 400 metre time trial. Running, start of with a 30 minute run.. ha, I am struggling, managed a 1km swim at lunch, furthest so far but still 500 metres short of the full session, running, struggling, managing a couple of miles runwalk. Biking isn't so bad.

So, did anyone else look at a 1500 metre swim and think ha!! or did you just get in the waterstart running these distances from the off?

Chris

  • Chris I started last year with this tri thing and it took me ages before i could do 400 metres in the pool to start with I couldn't even put my face in the water, my personal best so far is 1700 metres in 1 hr in the pool.

Also this time last year I was starting the couch to 5K program for the 7th time, in November I "ran" a marathon. (Quotes because time was very slow).

So I think if you try and hit the time durations as best you can you'll see yourself improve with practise and time. Run walk is an acceptable strategy too.

The good news is swimming is a bit easier and a bit faster in wetsuit as they make you more buoyant. It won't save you if you haven't trained at all but should help once the weather warms up and we can venture out to open water.

    Good luck.

  • Chris - have a look at this thread - should put things in perspective a little image

  • Cheers Folks, much appreciated

    Some mid life crisis !!

  • Don't worry yourself. I was thinking on my run just earlier today that after three years of long distance training, I've achieved sub-standard ordinariness in three sports. It will get easier, Chris. You'll achieve a level of competence. For the vast majority of us, swim sessions remain things to be feared and endured. Just do your hours and it'll come.

  • I love it when people ask me which is my best discipline of the three...and I am forced to answer that i am equally shit in all threeimage

  • 1500m is a big distance. I've done oodles of ironman races and my first swim of the year wont be 1500m ! Did you pluck a distance out of the air ?

But you are very mentally strong though to tough it out and not quit image

  • Best of luck Chris, enjoy whatever you take on image

Nope, this is the entry level drill set for Swim Smooth, the basic beginners one, for babies and soft arses like me! Hell of a way to start, but if I keep at it I should get it sorted in the next week or so...image the Fink drills are even harder and longer.

    Thanks for all the responses

PS, How do I become a Pirate?

  • You are one image

If, however you want the little pirate tag, report the thread and ask nicely

one year ago .. could almost swim 25m - i really mean almost hadnt biked for 20 years did my first 10k run in april 2011 - and not that quickly as I was a fat chuffer nearly one year on and its party time at the Outlaw soon - wouldnt have even dreamed of doing it if i hadnt looked on here and led astray image

i cant believe its not even a year since i posted the above in the thread mentioned by Rafiki, so there you go from nothing to (hopefully) double ironman in 2 years. Youll be alrightimage

  • first time I got in the poo to swim crawl I managed 800m image

    then 1000m the next time,

    then 1200m

take your time, increase it slowly, and swim as often as possible......
I swim 2-3 times and its ok.
4 times a week and you will see real improvement along with a divorce image

  • I always swim in water, but to each their own image
  • 2 times a week swimming in poo this tri lark is hard going
  • Think my first tri swim was 25m !
  • OC i would never recommend swimming in Poo its to viscous and slows you downimage
  • Possibly the reason oc only did 800 meters that and the smell
  • and i have been taking advice  on the swiming form OC..............no wonder my swimming is shit image

  • You take the rough with the smooth with these mentors Seren ... you know that   image

Perhaps I should up my premium as the PSOF 400m Champion 2012   image

Not necessarily true. Is it slower swimming in salt water which has a slightly higher viscosity than pool water? You get a greater purchase and pull more with each stroke so forward motion is about the same. Depending on the actual viscosity then actual swimming may be impossible so in which case a smelly crawl across the surface would be quicker anyway.

    Just Saying.

  • you overthink these thing Meface! image

  • Perhaps he speaks from experience?

  • Yep - the local pool. All those kids?

  • Pfah! Last time i try and be helpful....
