Based on Jennifer's excellent recce report, it sounds like there are areas with plenty of nettles etc, so would you recommend tights rather than shorts?
Hi James. I think you should be fine with shorts by September (the nettles should have died back a bit), but it will depend upon how sensitive your skin is, and whether you have bad allergic reactions to stings. One of the people running with us was wearing calf guards, which seemed to be quite a good way of protecting the legs without going for full on tights.
One month to go until the inaugural Stour Valley Path 100km ultra run – here is a lovely photo taken on the final stages of the route at the weekend. The British countryside is looking beautiful at the moment, perfect for trail running!
Unless you go for the early wave start, which leaves Newmarket at 0715am. This gives close to 13.5 hours to complete the course and make the final train. It's such a shame that Greater Anglia have decided to do engineering works that weekend, as they provided very little warning.
Roni and I will be helping at the Clare checkpoint(23miles) then finish line for this so as usual, we will be bringing some food bits with us as per the last two SDW runs.
We will try and bring our Vegan wraps, boiled potatoes and sea salt dip, vegetarian jelly beans and if we can work out how to transport it, Jelly
WiB, the entry list is up to date. No, the event definitely won't sell out in the next week or so, as we certainly have capacity for more runners. Many thanks
CheesyRider, thanks ever so much for being so proactive. It sounds like runners will have a feast at CP2!
On the flight back from Chamonix yesterday, I was chatting to quite a few ultra runners. One common food that I'd not considered before was 'watermellon'. I've never eaten it during a race myself, but they all seemed to think it was a great thing to have. Perhaps I'll add it to the shopping list for the checkpoints next year.
And if you haven't stuffed your face at checkpoint 2, I'll be waiting at checkpoint 3. All reasonable requests accommodated . And some unreasonable ones as well, if you ask nicely.
Hi all, I will be running this next weekend as well. Late to the conversation.... but cans of coke are always awesome on a checkpoint during an event!!
Maybe some small pasties too look forward to seeing everyone at the start line!!
Look forward to seeing you Firmmy. Can't promise cans of coke, but we will definitely have the bottled variety...hopefully in cups to ensure it's not too fizzy. There should also be some pastry products as well
Good points on the food, I"m helping out at one of the final checkpoints and just putting together my list now. I don't want to disappoint! Is cake a welcome addition?
I think it's amazing that so many runner etc. are helping Aid Stations! MANY THANKS! I've just come off one of the worst organised race experiences ever and seeing this is a refreshing change. Running this year but defo up for helping!
And for fuel .... flat coke for me but I do like a Mountain Dew towards the end lol! (I'll drop off the change)
I agree Ian, it's really great to see the people helping at the aid stations being so pro-active! Was sorry to hear about what happened at your last race. I love coming into an aid station where the volunteers are clearly having a lot of fun. Although, I must apologise as I don't normally want to hang around - it's not you, honestly! I know at races like Western States certain aid stations are run by the same people every year, and they really put their own personal stamp on things. The Ultrarunner podcast crew have helped out at aid stations fully dressed up in bandito garb, handing out beer to runners!
I'll also second water melon. I have got into the habit of only really eating fruit and gels when I race now, and nice juicy water melon slices are lovely!
Looking forward to seeing everybody next weekend. Thanks in advance to everybody giving up their time to help out on the day!
Hopefully everything will fall into place on the day. It certainly would not be possible without all these fantastic volunteers!
It's certainly quite a learning curve for a first race, and I'm sure there will be a few unexpected things to deal with. However, I'm sure with everyone helping out, we will be able to put on a great race for the runners! Now, let's just hope the weather behaves itself and nobody falls into the river after the sighting of the Essex shark in the River Stour earlier this week
Your website provides information for getting a train back to Newmarket after the race. I will be staying with my sister in Eley before and after the race, so is this along the same railway line?
I'm not sure Ben, as I'm not overly familiar with the trains in that area. I'm sure a search on Google will provide all the answers though, or use one of the websites such as The Trainline to check out train times.

So I'm going to need a better excuse for splashing out on some fishnets then...
So we have 11 and a half hours to make the last train back to Newmarket.
That sounds like an incentive for a PB!

Matt - How up to date is the entry list? I assume you are not expecting a sell out in the next week or so?

Anyone got any requests for particular food?

Wow, it sounds like the runners might want to stick around the checkpoints a while then

ps watermellon is an excellent shout!!!

It is no bad thing for each checkpoint captain to bring their own ideas for food to the table, because then every checkpoint is slightly different.

You could sell it as a Tough Mudder style race then.
Ha, I don't even think Tough Mudder or Tough Guy have sent runners through shark infested waters yet

Ben - the line splits after Bury St Edmunds with one branch going to Ely and one to Newmarket. Check out http://www.nationalrail.co.uk
Thanks for covering that one Running Rodent, much appreciated
OK, I have got the train issue sorted out now.
I just hope that the spectral hound that features in the race logo, doesn’t show on the last leg after it gets dark!
Well Ben, Black Shuck has been known to help lost walkers, so if he does show up, he might actually be helpful
OK, so he is not like the Hound of the Baskervilles.
That is a relief to know!
I'm in for this race after a DNF at UTMB TDS so need to exorcise some demons!
Beer was served at quite a few check points in the TDS.....just saying!
Watermelon was also great and a good shout, personal favourite is pork pies and sausage rolls.
