A week off marathon training to go cycling - thoughts?

Hello everyone,

I have signed up for the Richmond Marathon on 5th May. While I am training seriously, my goal isnt a specific time but to run it comfortably so I can enjoy the evening afterwards. Previous to this, I have run one marathon (Taunton in 2011) as well as a far few halfs. I go out at least 4 times a week, and my longest recent run was 21 miles on Monday, which went very encouragingly.

I am now thinking about taking a week off training to go cycling at the end of March. This would leave me with 5 weeks to race day. What do people think about this? Can you give me any tips/reassurance?

  • I don't think it will have much of an effect. It might even be good to have a rest.

    What's the cycling for ?
  • I think people lose the plot when it comes to marathon training.

    If you went jet skiing for a week it wouldnt have that much of an effect on your fitness and marathon nevermind cycling

  • I've ever only done one half marathon and don't know much.
     But, after going for a weeks cycling holiday covering 420miles, I came back to my running much stonger and some of the hills I used to not be able to run up, afterwards I could. You'll be fine.

    The ride itself is Brighton to Plymouth via the IOW. I will look to average 50 miles a day, so perhaps could fit in a rest day with a run. Would this be a good idea? Any benefit to be had there?

  • Ah, I thought it was the name of the route or something but that makes sense. Is this an organised ride Duncan or are you just doing it of your own back?
