  • Something's not right. Looking at revolver workout you done, you had 16 x 1 min interval at anaerobic zone and your HR didnt get much above 150. Are you super fit?

  • This all sounds so tempting - unfortunately my turbo predates the list of supported trainers (tacx grand excel) - would I need wifi in the garage/turbo den because I don't think the signal reaches very well at mine.

  • yes, you would. Alternatively, you could pick up a cheap mobile broadband dongle and use that with a payg sim. There must be ways to boost the signal to reach the shed, but I havent a clue what they are.

  • "You don't need a constant internet connection to use TrainerRoad. You just need one the first time you log in, then you need to connect once every 30 days to verify your license.

You can do all of your workouts without an internet connection. The workouts will save locally and automatically sync back to TrainerRoad.com when you connect to the internet and open the app.

There's no setting or any configuration needed for this to take place. It's all automatic."

I don't think it matters too much about the old turbo - I'd find a tacx that was broadly similar and use their virtual power levels. OK it wont be accurate - but it should be consistent ?

I have intermitent wifi in the garage but my laptop comes in with me after each session and syncs straight away with the trainerroad servers. well worth giving it a go if you already have the speed cadence sensor and ant+ dongle, since I started using at beginning of January turbo sessions have become my favorite training activity rather than my least favorite.

  • I have an elite RealTour turbo so it's not on the list - I chose what I guess is the nearest. That could be the problem I suppose?
  • I can cope with the wifi dropping in and out for TR. It's streaming films that I find tricky in the garage. I need a booster thingy.

Well, in a few weeks time anyhow. Don't want to rush these things.

It shouldn't matter. When you do your FTP test you get a number of Watts, or Whats or Bananas. This number is then used for setting the power target for each workout. It matters not whether you have an FTP or 100 or 500 - the number is relative.

Does your turbo have resistance? This could be the problem. Each resistance level has it's own speed to power curve, and your selected turbo is on resistance level 1 - so min resistance.

When you did There Is No Try how much did the intervals hurt?

  • +1 for not needing to be online during workouts. I can't get a wifi signal in the garage at all, but it all works fine. Just upload workouts when I come back into the house.

  • well just signed up and completed the 8 minute test. finish with a score of 218. Def felt it in the legs after leg drills at swimming last night plus its the first time on the bike since i had a bike fit on Saturday.

Going to give it a few weeks and have another go with fresh legs and see what the difference is as think i could of gone harder in the first 8 minutes

  • Well my original plan of going to the gym tonight got scrapped, so decided to get on the trainer and do a proper session now that I've got an FTP test done. Loaded up Revolver (without the vid) as figured a Sufferfest session would help me figure out if my FTP is too low or not. Didn't find it particularly full of suffering at any point, though I had to call it a day after half the intervals as my knee started to twinge and I didn't want to risk anything.

How much crying should I have actually been doing by the mid point of Revolver? Methinks another FTP test is in order over the weekend, that involves me actually growing a pair and giving it a proper go...

  • There is no try hurt. I felt more Knackered after tgat than I did with revolver.

It does matter, of course, if the turbo has a vastly different curve to the model which has been selected in TR. The point regarding consistency holds some water - the turbo will generate the same resistance at a given speed (provided stable temperature etc) - but given the FTP is used to set all of your levels, then the turbo may not give consistent reporting across this range (even relative to your FTP).

FTP is just one point on the curve, and without knowing the shape of the rest of the curve, you can't use speed to target a percentage of threshold power.

  • I take it all back. Just done Downward Spiral and it really rather hurt

  • just finished 'the wretched'. Great workout but i have trouble keeping a high cadence with low power. Need to improve this

  • So... Garmin 800 being purchased this week. Need it for two bikes... options? Presumably I don't need to fork out for a spare Garmin mount set and can go a cheaper option?

  • Edge 800 will come with two bar mounts as standard. If you want to run both on TR then you will either need to swap the GSC-10 over or you will need to buy a second. You may also need to buy the Ant+ stick if you don't have it already. As the Edge 800 syncs via USB cable then I don't *think* it comes with the dongle - but I haven't bought one myself so couldn't tell you. Check DC Rainmaker.

  • I've just ordered a cheap out front mount for my 500 off the bars. If I'm on the TT bike I cant see a stem mounted computer. I'll see if this works out - if not you can get clamps off the tribars that might work well.
  • Don't need both bikes on TR - so just a second mount set and sensor needed for when on the road.

  • As I said, you don't *need* a second mount set. I put mine on the extensions and I can see it. That's setup dependent (I.e. YMMV)
  • What about the sensor and reader etc?

  • Sensor yes. Unless you want to keep swapping.

    What's a reader? image

  • Somewhere to hold my book.

Can't get sweaty on the turbo without a good set of Catherine Cookson image

  • Finally got my all-singing-all-dancing-may-train-for-me-garmin. Certainly a step up from my casio sports watch.

So Ant+ dongle's for the laptop? Talk to me...

  • The Suunto movestick mini. Keep it in the USB slot permanently cos its diddy.

Anyone any idea how cadence is recorded when I'm on my powertap ? I've not got the cadence sensor on my TT bike - but its still showing up ? I can't see that the hub can tell this ? Is it just guessing ?

(I googled - apparently it works it out from your power spikes. Works just fine for me - if I'd read up - I'd not have ordered the spare sensor !)
  • I've just got a new cadence speed sensor for the bike on the turbo as the GCS10 was donated to someone who's original would only record cadence.

It's a decathlon own combined unit. Not as neat as the GCS10 but only ??17!
  • Finally all set up and sorted. Have a marathon this weekend so FTP testing can probably wait until after then I suppose

  • I've just set up an account with Trainerroad and as recommended my first session was a 20min FTP test.

Everything paired properly and Heart Rate, Speed and Cadence matched my bike computer, but power was very high from the start. I've ended up with a FTP of 365.

I contacted the support email and they suggested I checked the sensor positioning because a bad speed reading can effect virtual power but it was fine and speed reading are as per bike computer and as I would normally expect to see.

I'm using an Elite Volare Mag Force Elastogel which is supported.

Anyone else had these problems or got any ideas?

  • 365 - nice image  -  my FTP hit 260 earlier in the year - not there now....

on the other hand, you are not comparing your figures to anyone else -

Mine calculated based on a longer ride on Wales with a specific (flakey in the wet quark power meter)... yours on a turbo, caluclated based on speed

the important thing is repeatability / consistency - if your set up always gives you that high value, then the value of x is great - you are after training zones and improvements - the actual values compared to anyone else is irrelevant

If your next FTP test comes out at 500 or 200, you have a problem with your set up.  If its 310 or 350, all good.

You will get better at FTP tests - you learn how to hurt so initial gains are just learning how to do the tests better.  However, its also easy to have a 'less' good test by being a bit knackered / not as motivated / poor choice of music.

So train based on your FTP value and ignore comparisons with anyone else - hope that helps
