Mass participation sports

Other than running, what options are there for participation in sporting events? The sort of thing you can enter and turn up and take part in, without actually having to prove talent.

All I can think of are sportives, open water swimming and triathlon...

  • I used to compete in martial arts. Little talent was proven.
  • Usually got beat up by kids half my age.

  • Mass participation sports? What, you mean like mass - turbating? image

Loads of sports clubs try to get people involved by running beginners' courses and lending equipment till you decide if you like it or not. e.g. I've done fencing and archery for very little money.

  • I was thinking more of things that you don't have to commit to set times of practice, as would be required for netball, football, etc. I can go out running as and when it convenient for me, and - if I was so inclined - I could just turn up at a race and take part if I wanted to. I want something else like that - flexible but with the option of participation in something every so often. My knee and brain don't like running any more...

Golf, archery and shooting. Bowls, tenpin bowling, curling and kite flying.

They do say that you can get a lot of satisfaction getting involved in organisation and administration of sporting events like track and field.

Orienteering might be worth looking at. You don't need to run, esp at the smaller events, you can walk or joggle a bit. Some events are on very even ground, others in woods or some open acess land. It's a case of pick the events that suit you. It really is good fun, esp for you as you enjoy adventure racing.

Other than that, golf, but then you could just take up hiking or long distance walking. Be much more fun.

Swimming you can do as and when but it can be a bit expensive, no more so than running though, less kit just more up front money each time you swim. I'm lucky and can swim in the sea for free in the summer when they hike the price of the pool, in the winter the pool is cheap.

Gym, or exercise at home. It's not really sport and you don't get medals but I don't think any other sport gives you medals just for taking part.

    Extreme ironing.
