Personally, I'd rather wear a watch while running than carry a smartphone, but others get by with inexpensive apps.
Strava is free.
I'll check out the watches, thank you. Judging from a lot of the training guides I've briefly looked at for speed/interval training a watch looks invaluable.

Why are you feeling deflated? You've had some ribbing about the time you believe you ran, but it's by the by. Unless you were expecting to be a future world champion, of course. Whatever your current condition, you will improve over time. Good luck with the parkrun.
Not so much ribbing as natural scepticism. I would love it to be true. Would be more intersting that just another bullshitter. Please do prove us all wrong.

I just genuinely have no idea about times. Had I then I certainly wouldn't have said anything. I just trusted Map my Run.

Sussex Runner, I'd like it to be true too. I certainly would never make that sort of thing up. Just quoted what the app said. (Computer says No)
you will know pretty quickly at Parkrun if you are running a sub 17 5k. if youre 500m in with everyone behind you and not coughing up a lung youre the real deal
I think people are just a bit shocked that you have in 6 weeks achieved something that most people will never achieve in their lives. As a comparison it took me 8 weeks to get to 40 minutes for 5k and I can not ever see me being that quick.
I would echo the earlier comments that if you can do 17 mins for 5k in 6 weeks you should possibly be looking at running in a professional capacity.
I am planning to so a Park run in a couple of weeks so I will update here one way or the other!
My PT went round my route last night in her car before she came over and said it was 5k, there or there abouts. I suspect its a touch short. I will keep you posted!

Firstly, congrats on the running, it sounds like you're making fantastic progress. I've written a blog on cheap running shoes and another on what I consider the essentials each runner should have when they start running! I'm not sure how helpful you'll find them, but i've tried to identify what you get for the money you pay for a shoe which might point you in the right direction.

I quite like the idea of a lady smashing a sub 17 5k in a solo time trial, 6 weeks into training, after years of nothing.
Not only that but wearing any old gear, not even proper shoes, and not even lighter kit.
Unfortunately, this thread has to be stacked alongside, the chap who thought he'd done a sub 30 solo 10k training run, and the chap who thought he was doing sub 16min 5ks in Brighton down the pier

The ParkRun is meant to be tomorrow that BR is running so we should find out then. This hasnt been a typical showoff thread though, i think BR is rightly saying she isnt sure, its not like she is trying to blag anything. My guess would be the distance is in km, 3.2k in 17mins sounds about right for someone just returning to running.
So any plans for a 5k this weekend Barton? I'm sure we'll all be rooting.
