The old knees again

When i kneel on my left knee I get a sharp stabbing pain like I have knelt on something sharp.

No really.

Yet of course I haven't. It's quite an intensive yelp worthy pain.

Anyone with any ideas what it might be.

No there's not anything embedded in my knee and it's been going on for a couple of weeks and not getting any better.

Doesn't hurt otherwise, doesn't effect exercise, just cleaning the floor as you do.

It's not the knee cap it's below.

So this morning it felt like my knee was bleeding and now it feels like it's badly grazed, extending down my leg an inch or two. There's nothing to see, now redness or swelling and not hot to touch or anything.

The description of the pain sounds like a nerve-based problem rather than muscle/tendon inflammation. 

Have you tried palpating the area? Try it with both a straight leg, then with a bent leg (replicating the same sort of extension as when kneeling if possible) to try and locate the pain. 

It could be something to do with the bursa, but you'd probably have pain at other times/with other acitivities.

Have a look at Patela Tendonitus, I remember from a couple years back it hurt like you describe, when you kneel down, and is a really sharp intense pain.

It is always just below the front of the kneecap, and can be slightly to one side.

I had this a year or so ago.

First noticed it when I kneeled down by the bath to wash the kids hair, so on a soft mat surface. No pain other than that, all types of running were fine.

I just tried to avoid kneeling like that for a while and it went away all by itself.
