First Marathon!

Hi guys!

I have my first marathon in just under 2 weeks and did not really pay attention to my trainers during my run plan. My current trainers have logged 490 miles and I have about 30 miles left of my log. After realising I was close to the gospel 500 mile switch off point ( according to most blogs and articles on the net..) I bought a new pair. After getting advice as to what to do from a specialist in a running store I am still none the wiser?

So what do I wear..

A - Old trainers that would have logged 520 miles before the big day?

B - New trainers that would have logged 30 miles before the big day?

Annoyed I put myself in this position in the first place as I know I should have been wearing trainers that were only halfway through their life!   Thanks in advance!

  • over 500 miles?

didn't they simply explode or disintegrate at that point?

  • If you are not experiencing any issues with your old shoes then wear them.

The 500 miles thing seems to be made up by the shoe companies to get you to buy new ones more often.
  • Yes wear your old shoes you will be fine.

  • If running in the older shoes is no problems then stick with them image

  • my old trainers have done over 1000 miles no bother, don't believe all that running shop blah. You'll probably give up running after your marathon anyway if its your first race?

  • How are the new shoes ? Have you done a long run in them ? Do they feel any different to the old ones ?

If the old ones feel flat and you've a long run in the new ones then i would go with new.

If you can't tell a difference or not done a long run in the new shoes - i would go with the old shoes.

    this.

  • If the trainers are still comfy I would go with them, plenty of runners on here wear there trainers long after the 500 mile markimage

  • If it stresses you out and you can afford to get an identical pair, then fine just do it and chill image if you cannot get an identical pair, exactly the same model then don't bother trying wih a new similar pair just stick with your tried and tested onesimage

a lot of it is how comfortable you feel, I guess if you worry about the 500 mile thing then you are going to buy them anyway for after you marathon so might as well get them now and try the old ones post mara and see if you can spot any difference if not keep interchanging between the two pairs, using the old ones when it is going to be especially muddyimage

  • Wear the old ones if they aren't causing problems. I've got 2 pairs on the go with well over 700 miles on them at the moment. 500 miles is totally made up - shoes are worn out when they are worn out, which may be more or less than 500 miles. Just keep an eye out for any recurring niggles which start appearing.

  • You will expose yourself to more risk by running the marathon in a brand new pair of trainers that have not been tested, than you will by using the tried and trusted old pair.  The 500-600 miles thing is a rough guide.  If you are not noticing any difference in them, then there obviously isn’t a serious problem.  Running the marathon would be suitable swansong for them.
