I usually get through 4 to 6 batteries during the night (it takes 2 AAs)but only have the torch on the middle setting. They claim with the Trail runner 2 that with 3 AAAs will last all night.
This is the back-up (or training) headlamp I mentioned. £6 (see link) is about right. You can wrap this around your wrist and you forget it's there. Takes a few secs to get it on your head.
I wish they were still about loulabell as i've been looking ever since and so wish i had bought more at the time! Bought it not knowing anything about it but thinking well it's only a tenner so not a catastrophe if rubbish. Then didn't really get a chance to use it properly for a while and by the time i did and realised just how great it was.... They were all gone
If it ever packs up on me I will definitely look at something with a separate battery pack as i love being able to clip it to my waist. It is a bit heavier with the 4 AA's but lasts soooo much longer.
I'm new to ultra running and I'm looking at getting a rucksack. The North Face Enduro and Salomon Agile packs look good for around ??60. OMM seems to do fairly cheap bags, but I'm not sure about the quality and then at the other end of the spectrum there's the Ultimate Direction vests for upwards of ??90. All of these bags look decent, but I'm just not sure what your getting for the money and whether it's worth investing in a more expensive one for the long term. If anyone could shed some light on this or give me a bit of advice on which to choose, it would be much appreciated. Thanks
James, I can't comment on the other bags but I love my OMM Ultra 12. I've had it almost a year now, it's been out pretty much every weekend including some all-dayers and still looks brand new... So quality is excellent in my opinion. Only disadvantage for me is a lack of front pouches, so I have modified mine with Raidlight mini pochettes to allow me to stash more things where I can reach them. It is super comfy!
Thanks for the replies... the longest distance I'll be doing next year is 100km. Ideally I'd want to go for a bladder, just personal preference, the bags I've been looking at more closely range from 9.2 to 15 litres (don't really want to go any bigger than that).
@LNandB - what's the bag like in terms of noticing it on your back while running?
I can recommend the inov-8 race elite 20. I agree with LN&B about the OMM Ultra 12, I switched to inov-8 for the front pockets - having stuff within easy reach is huge for me, as I am rubbish at making myself take packs off and getting things out.
I'm the same Tiago, but yet to find anything that fits as well - hence adding extra pockets to my OMM pack!
I don't really notice it on my back at all, but I do think it is a very personal thing, so may be worth trying some packs on before purchasing if you can.

Managed to pick one of these up in tkmax for a tenner earlier this year-

It's taken me right through the night now several times and has to be the luckiest find and best tenner I've ever spent

Good luck.... but if you find any... I will be expecting nothing less than a run through the night to hand deliver
A lot depends on how far you're running and how much kit you want to carry. Do you want a bladder or bottles?
