  • Been away for a while, so just had a quick read.

Fantastic news on the new job Scott, sounds ideal! Not great news on the misalignment but that would certainly explain alot of the problems you've had. Nice distance to commute to work and probably just as quick as driving sometimes.

Been following your comeback on Strava Matt and it's very clear to see the improvements

Been keeping up a combination of short runs and gym work. Things slowly getting better I think. Just got to be patient and keep it all sensible.

  • Hi all, gutted to hear of your troubles Scott E. It sucks. It's really not fair to you and I seriously hope this gets sorted out soon and you can get back to running.

I will update you on my own running. So I've decided trying to stick to a cycle is not a good idea as you should just listen to your body. One rest day every 8 days is not enough either. What I'm doing now is simply a session every 4 days. The days in-between I just run as much as I think I can manage without pushing myself too much.

I've been having more and more rest days lately, and the runs have been getting shorter and shorter. Every morning for 4 days now the first 10 minutes or so after I wake up my left foot hurts and causes me to limp. By the time I've eaten breakfast it's fine, but still, that's not right is it?

Also, I've got a VERY worrying pain in my right shin this evening. :s When I walk it hurts and causes me to limp. Miraculously, though, the pain is not there when I run or jog, only when I walk. What's up with that? I am fully aware of how bad shin splints can be. I've witnessed people spend close to a year out of action because of it. Please, please, don't let it be anything serious.
  • Cheers Scott! Excited to get stuck in, ironically been exchanging and reading a quick email convo with Al-P regarding New forest 10 so one of my first jobs will be getting on that.

I got out to try to the commute which was around 6-7 miles (I turned slightly earlier) Easily quicker to cycle, I can cut down past Riverside and onto wide line and I was there in under 25 minutes, seeing as I'll be aiming to get to there for 9 it's a crap time to drive too.

I also managed another 2 mile run, it felt much better but I got a stitch and had to stop after around 5 minutes for a few minutes at least, I nearly tripped over myself a few times it seems my brain can't lift my legs up and still feel very unlikely easy but it was ok

I headed to the gym after and cycled for about 25 mins which was an attempted sessions 2 x 5 mins - 6 x 60s. Mia called me fairly early in so couldn't go all out and was more steady but it's something. Hugely unfit and although still slim more KGs going on

Stay patient Scott, the time will come

TTI - Good to hear from you, if pain goes away that quick it's likely to be a stress reaction so just rest and don't run until it feels better, if you run consectuive days that's when it could break down.

I was having a least one day off a week and have done forever basically, I don't think I've done a month ot even two weeks with no day off. Keep at it!

  • Busy few days! 1st week ish on the new job

Eye opening! Learnt about so many new products already and lucky to try out loads of Salomon and Suunto gear yesterday which was so cool, was a real struggle to run but I managed about 2.5 miles. Painful. No better in the hip / groin area at all

Anyway, been cycle commuting about 6 miles each way. Did go to the gym on Tuesday and do an elliptical session which was tough. Cycled today in a bit longer (10 miles) Piles have been pretty bad actually

Didn't cycle Wednesday because I drove straight to Alton after for the event.

Not much else to report really!

  • Settling in ok at the new job, still finding and learning new things, meeting new people and constantly on the go to try and start driving the business forward so it's really exciting and keeping me busy. Been cycling every day to and from work and started to go slightly longer into work so 10 miles in, getting ok paces but those times I cycle the traffic is generally pretty heavy so sometimes stop starting a lot

Got a few events coming up now, TomTom, Adidas, CEP, Altra, ON, visiting WADAC club to sell some kit as we are their base. That'll keep me busy and it's really go to learn all the tech behind the gear

Still can't run and although I've been feeling healthy all year my piles have started to cause a bit more of a constant issue. finally had a hospital appointment and got checked over.

I have another Anal fissure and an exposed pile, so using the headache cream more with another round of botox scheduled in 4 weeks and an ultrasound by the same period hopefully. She checked my stomach etc out and seems to think a ligament attaching into the pubic bone is the one causing me my pain and issues. Not going to be an easy fix and may mean surgery on that. It may even mean I don't run again for a long time and we are creeping into 9 weeks now anyway I've pretty much given up on hope for since 2014 I haven't had even 6 consistent months

Suitably unfit although cycling is ok, 30 mins isn't going to cut anything

    Hope everyone is well !

  • In the end, I was having big issues with my calf. It ended up being 9 days of no exercise whatsoever until the pain eased. Throughout those days I was limping for the first 10 minutes of the day but walking normally after that. On my first 3 runs returning from injury I felt fine. But since then I have had serious trouble. The pain is strange. It's all across my right side from the waste down. Yesterday, I set off and my right buttock was really stinging. Next my anklie was killing me. My Hamstring was next to feel the burn. I can't understand what's causing this. The obvious explanation is overuse but I just returned from a week and a half out of action. Surely 16 miles across 3 days is not overtraining for me when I'm just about to turn 19-years-old. I heard Matt goes on 2 hour runs sometimes so it frustrates me that I can barely cope with 40 or 50 minute runs. The maximum I can do is about 12 miles but I'd have to rest the day before AND after. The only thing is that ALL my runs are currently on concrete as I simply don't have anywhere else to train. Could that be an issue? Back on nights again so I have no time to run other than at 7:30AM at the end of each shift. Planning 6 X 800m this morning. Not the type of session I enjoy so I'm pretty nervous, not even sure if my Right leg will cope well enough to allow me to do it.

As for you Scott, it's a massive shame. I really hope you can get fit again. Fingers crossed 2018 will be your year where you hit your peak and stay injury free.

It's a shame about this thread. It seems to be dying somewhat. Only around 2 posts per week at the moment. Maybe activity will pick up again and I'll keep popping in as long as folks are still around.

Here's hoping we can all get fit again!
  • Hello everyone!!!

Sorry to hear of your troubles TTI, any updates?? I don't have a clue what could cause something like that although sounds nerve related if it's moving around ??

At your age 12 miles is still a long way I think and even for lads running much much quicker now they don't do longer, much better to run smaller day in day out consistently and bring up the pace

For me still no running, 3 months or so ? Have continued cycking into and home from work, very unfit although feel better after two weeks now. It is going to be a struggle with this whole running thing!

The shop is going well and getting stuck in more now, enjoying it and talking running every day is great for me

  • Sorry to hear of your troubles TRI, i'd get your problems checked out as would be a little worried that it seems to be affected the whole of your right side, maybe a nerve issue?

Have seen that Matt has been right back at it on Strava so hope everything is well with you  :)

Pleased that the new role is going well Scott. Sorry to hear of your woes and the possibility of surgery :( definitely get out for a ride soon

Not much better hear, I sorted the calf issue out with loading exercises at the gym. Started picking the running up again and was hopefull of getting back to the group but the old knee injury reappeared and seems to now affect the inner top of my knee along with the bottom. Saw a physio today who said to do lots of quad deep stretching but next step is to try to get a scan or referred to a podiatric specialist. Did over 70miles cycling at the weekend and got a new bike. In France for the week now and watched the Tour today :)

  • Sorry to hear so many woes still persisting guys, hope you all get things sorted.
Scott glad to see that the job is going well.

I'm still gradually trying to build a base back up by squeezing easy runs in where I can around work and family. No attempt at any sessions. Still slow but at this stage grateful not to be injured.

Sleep situation is starting to get a bit better in the last couple of weeks now that the youngest is weaning onto foods and going longer uninterrupted at night. Occasionally I see a sign that my legs are starting to come back, eg feeling stronger up hills again, feeling fresher on consecutive days, HR slightly improved etc - I'm sure that the recovery from the 'extra' (or rather less-deprived) sleep is paying off there. If I could string a block of consistent weeks of training and sleep together than I feel like it would all fall into place again. Sadly that's easier said than done - eg last three weeks being 24mi, 33mi, 8mi - all over the place :) - but running is far from top priority for me after family, work, home improvements. So I'll take what I can get...
  • Inguinal hernia, will need surgery . Bollocks to running for a while

    All the best everyone
Pain is weakness leaving the body
  • It has been a very tough few months. I have ran 3 times since the end of April all with zero success really and it's nearly 4 months off running now and looking to be a lot more. Fitness has well and truly gone and weight has gone up.

I have settled into the new job and loving it, I have started to cycle commute more and more and actually feel a little direction coming. Trying to restore hope! It's helped a little with fitness but even a small headwind I feel like it's effort and having a re occurrence of piles and them some bleeding its been ugly so I've just settled for nothing more than heading in and home, no sessions or anything

More scans next week to pinpoint what will happen on the operating table but I'm unlikely to run for the rest of the year given the wait time for op, recovery and then bit of rehab before going. I won't be able to have any time off work sick either with the baby due and no paternity entitlement so I'll have to book in on a day off and I'll be back the next day.

I went through a phase of a week or 10 days bleeding every time after the toilet, it was nasty but it seems to have stopped, it made me weak and I saw the doctor who told me I have another anal fissure. More tablets + nasty cream and it's helped but now back to piles protruding and painful throbbing. Not sure which I prefer .

Embarking on some more serious cycling training next week, someone has offered support for 4-6 weeks and that will hopefully set me up well, needing another FTP test though so trying to work out how I can do that properly around logistics of getting to and from work etc

I think I'd like to go back to being more active on here, even posting with what ever training I will do because it's clear I wont ever be able to run at my old standards again despite my age an op nearly every year for 5 years now coupled with setbacks / injury / accidents inbetween my body isn't cut for it.

    Hope everyone is well!!!

Hi guys! Been running okay once again here. Gone back to having more frequent rest days. Doing a 4-day cycle of long run, short run, intervals, rest and it's working. I should never have changed it in the first place. Been injury free now for a good 2 weeks. Let's hope it continues. When the weather cools down I'd like to attempt a sub-17 parkrun but we'll see. Sad to hear of your woes Scott. Hope things can get better!
  • Good to hear from you! 2 weeks is good ;) saw your sub 17 thread quest. Weather Dane for everyone as even if it's hot, that won't mean you can't run 16:xx

Defo do not need mileage, consistent quality rules. I've done sub 16 off 30mpw, ran slower off 65mpw, been injured at both ends of volume so it's how you manage that sweet spot..

Get a date pace down, I'd bite it and run all out over a decent parkrun and see where you are today and move a progressive training program running at 17 min pace . Shorter reps run faster than 17, longer reps closer to 17. Recoveries half of what you have ran in terms of time

As you get fitter, build the faster reps up in distance .

Check your date pace 6 weeks time and adjust

  • Been super busy working, generally at home in the evenings I'll do a few hours uploading to the website but it's a slow process. Had a few events on and training evenings I've attended and looking forward to getting involved with some more races this winter which is exciting, I've taken on local XC league (CC/6 confirmed today) we're allready on the Hampshire XC league, doing all the HRRLs and even police 10 mile champs to name a few!

I started the cycling coaching this week, it's only 4 weeks trial period and pretty similar to what I would do in a running plan to be fair, I miss out because I don't have a power meter and the bike really does make a difference so incoporating commutes and alot would be regular riding anyway as I've been absent for years from any constant cycling

Still the piles have been painful but no bleeding, botox soon but need to move appointment , my metal screw in the head has been a bit sore (swollen, bit crusty, leaky) so awaiting a look for that and then into my ultrasound the last week to confirm this hernia and pinpoint area for surgery and make a plan... Except there is no hernia and yet I still cannot run, as I found out Thursday when I visited WADAC track night and attempted a jog. 4 months .

Being re reffered to another specialist and will have an MRI now and go from there, he's gone back to his original theory that the ligament into my groin has detached, which makes more sense that I can't extend my legs backwards without pain and restriction but annoyingly that theory was brushed off because I could they cycle..

Have considered myself to be permanently out of running now anyway being so unfortunate with injury (lazy on top) and just not interested in putting myself through physical hurt to get into shape and with time restraints when I'm investing myself into work and baby on the way in just a few months anyway . Don't get me wrong if I wanna get up at 4 o clock to cycle or run I could but I just don't feel a passion to do that for competition purposes, I can keep healthy on a few hours a week around work commutes. I guess it's come from seeing the boys punish themselves at the track and seeing on the group chat different things now and just thinking, why would I go back to that . Change of mindset or heart not in it I don't know which but it's ok and I'm happy with it, as I won't ever be able to accomplish what I wanted and I can't pretend it will happen through some luck or in a few years.

    Onto new things!

  • "Every setback has a comeback"

94.5 KG as of tonight. Nearing 32 years old.

    3 Doughnuts

    4 chocolate bars

    Mcmuffin for breakfast. Standard

I've ran around 15 x this year. About 4 x the amount of days off I've had from work though

My last posts here in August 2017 show I was coming off another 4 month break. So this is 3 and a bit years of nothing at all really a few spells of some odd random runs. I've messed around on a rented Wattbike through lockdown and perhaps done 1-2 hrs a week on average for 3 months. Lost some weight

I'm still shitting blood (Those that know, know), I had (minor) head surgery last year (again)

Got more running shoes than I can count

    Let's go....

    That's a real bump of a thread :)
Still a really young pup though, so plenty of hope ahead!
  • Just over 5KM tonight after a usual long week at work and doing things

I'm blowing hard at 7.30m/m but trying to keep in controlled

Havent ran since August in which I ran twice.

I ran 9 times in July in some resurgence of doing 5km at work but in total. Less than 30 miles for that month which is rather pathetic

I'm only about 4 years behind where I was though
