Desert Island cheeses

So you're stuck on a desert island. The only thing you are allowed an unlimited supply of is crackers and three kinds of cheese. What  would you choose?

Mine would be:

1. Cornish Cruncher Diablo

2. Cropwell Bishop Stilton

3. Mull of Kintyre Cheddar

  • A good strong cheddar

    Stilton

    Gjetost

  • Is there an unlimited supply of port? If there is no alcohol on the island my choices would look very different, so I need to know.

There's a case of something (your choice) but only one case.

  • Rosary goat cheese
    Ossau-Iraty
    Manchego

  • A good mature Cheddar

    single Gloucester

    and some buffalo Mozzarella.

  • Smoked (the sausage looking one)

    cranberry cheese

    A nice mature chedder

  • Most of you are doing it wrong. If you're only allowed three cheeses, you're wasting a vote by picking ones that are very similar. Mine are:

    cheddar or cantal
    a nice goat's cheese
and something soft or semi-soft like chaource.

    PS: am I allowed oatcakes?

Perfect.  With some Prosecco or Champagne.  And yes, lit, oatcakes.  Nairn's rough oatcakes.

If we were allowed olives I'd have some gordal olives with olive oil and a little bit of ground sea salt.  Since we're on a desert island there's probably plenty of salt available.

If we were on a dessert island, it would have to be sticky toffee pudding.

  • thing is, ossau-iraty is not actually that different from manchego. Maybe slightly sweeter. Seems like a wasted choice, though I agree they are both delicious.

  • different textures.  And Ossau-iraty slightly smokey flavour.  Could substitute a strong mature pecorino for the manchego, also good.

  • I'm going to go and eat some cheese now.

  • Where do you buy these delicious sounding cheeses? image

  • somerdale Black mountain

    stilton

    mature chedddar

  • How has Jarlsberg not got a mention? The best cheese full stop.

  • Cinders - ossau-iraty and chaource are available in Sainsbury's. Cantal harder to find in UK.

  • OK, my genuine choices before I saw literatin's:

    Montgomery Cheddar

    Colston Bassett Stilton

    Chaource

Basically, it has to be a Cheddar, a blue and a soft cheese, and Chaource is just bloody brilliant. Really creamy but a more complex and interesting flavour than Brie or Camembert and all that malarkey.

I'll take a chance on the booze running out. Montgomery Cheddar goes with anything, including wild boar. Please say there are boars on the island? Or warthogs or something?

    Probably.

  • I'm not that bothered about blue, which is why I'll have a goat's cheese in that gap in my cheeseboard. There is a restaurant in Paris which is famous for its cheeseboard (at the end of its bargainous 4-course menu specialising in game when in season) which has cantal, peppered goat's cheese, normal goat's cheese, brie, blue and something else I've forgotten. YUM.

  • Phil...I was just thinking i hped thee was loads of anilmals on the island I could eat

  • anything heavy, strong, blue and offensively smelly.

  • Well you are on a desert island - no need to worry about the neighbours image

  • offensively smelly... bugger, I forgot munster! Can I have four?

Okay, in that case, since I suspect I haven't got any cumin seeds, I will stick with my original choices. Do I have wine?

  • Ossau-Iraty

    Shropshire blue, or Danish blue

    A good, ripe Camembert

    Fine-milled oatcakes image

  • Cheers Mr A!  image

I'm thinking about this island now - what does warthog milk taste like?  Can you make cheese from it?

  • Has the edit function disappeared??

Can I have some grapes with my cheese, please?

  • Can I have pickles please??
