High heels

I've spoken to a few runners who have said high heels put too much strain on the legs and feet and with the extra stress of running makes you more prone to injury. So asking all the women and men on here have you found that to be true? I gradually stopped wearing them to work and was severely told off by a guy at the shoe store when I went in to buy new trainers for wearing wedges. Nowadays I nearly always choose flats, regardless of occasion or duration of wear required.

    I don't wear heels every day though, just mid high (6-8cm)  for work and they come off the minute I come home or at the weekends when i live in flats.

     

    I find it more that my feet hurt in heels from the running rather than my running suffers because of the high heels.  Or maybe I am just old and like comfort!

  • It depends on the height and width of the heel.

    I wouldn't recommend anyone (runner or not) to teeter around on 6 inch stilettos but mid high is fine especially if the heel is quite chunky so your heel is properly supported - boot heels for example.

  • Seriously these days.... the lassies can't even walk in some of the stupid shit they put on their feet - they have to hang on to one another to get to the toilets - and that's BEFORE they have a drink..

  • I find flat shoes like ballet pumps uncomfortable.  I prefer a wedge heel or something chucky like a boot heel.

  • I wear heels from time to time, when going out.  It doesn't seem to affect  my running.

    Mostly I wear shoes with a small heel - not totally flat.  I find completely flat shoes uncomfortable.

     

  • They're the worst. When I got PF it was through wearing flat pumps.

    My mum who's on the rather short side can't wear anything but heels now as it pulls on the back of her legs.  She even looks for slippers with a slight heel.

    She wore 6 inch heels every day of her adult life and ended up with shortened tendons.

  • I wear trainers most of the time but if I'm going out out (like out out, out out out) then I always wear heels....usually 5/6 inch stilettos - I love them image I haven't found any problems so far..

  • Flat shoes for day to day wear and high heels if going out, wearing high heels gives my calves a good workout image

  • I hate heels. Sometimes wear a small one for going out but to be honest I wish I could walk everywhere barefoot!

    I think if you wear high heels a lot of the time then yes your achilles tendon does shorten and that's not good for your running. Especially when women have a shorter achilles than men anyway.

    If I'm somewhere I have to walk, like work (even just round the office) flats flats flats.

    The wounded gazelle look is never sexy.

    I vary my heel height. Some days flats, some days low and chunky, other times very high. I cant walk very far or very quickly in high heels but I've not noticed a detrimental effect on my running. If anything, completely flat, slip on shoes are the least comfy.
