Right I got this question right, then thought the answer was a bt wacky and was wrong so looked up the place I thought couldn't be right (which was Portsmouth) and have found that Portsmouth does have what I thought the rest had too - so as I have cheated I will eolave it to someone else to get the glory.
As a clue it was Screama's answer that set off the light bulb in my brain!
Something to do with motorways? Southampton and Portsmouth both have motorways (M271 and M275), not sure exactly how that connects with the rest though.

Don't think so no. Unless SFF knows something I don't?
It's a bit obtuse so the clue word is 'communication'

Oh maybe I'm wrong then - I thought it might be that they were cities with 2 cathedrals?
Portsmouth has 2 cathedrals?!
Ah but then Liverpool does too doesn't it?
Ha. No. It's not that. I guess you could also include Liverpool for that one.
As far as I know, my list is exclusive. I don't think I've missed any off.
It's a very nerdy bit of knowledge I've had banked over the years waiting for it to come up at my local Pub Quiz
Cathedrals where Tangerine Dream toured in the 1970s/80s?
Yes, unless a number of different websites are all conspiring to make me look stupid.
Original telegraph relay stations? Blimey, I don't know!

Hmm struggling - are you Victoria Coren?
Is it something to do with telephone numbers or codes?
The fury: :Ships HMS ?
Actaully you aren't too far in saying that these places have a 2 where other cities (and towns for the matter) only have a 1.
Definitely not. There is a fine line between high-brow knowledge and nerdy knowledge. This is definitely the latter.
