  • It's always the breakfast table socialists that get uppity about wearing Poppy's.

  • Pointless war in Afghanistan?

It must have escaped your notice that Afghanistan (now Northern Pakistan/Sub Sahara African states) was the melting pot for radicalisation.  al qaeda and taliban training camps were at the centre of many of the terrorist attacks, particularly in London.  We don’t hear much of al qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan these days, bin laden is dead and so are many of his henchmen.  The muslim brotherhood are also in retreat.  Whilst desperately needing to improve and reduce corruption there is fledgling democracy in Afghanistan and girls get to go to school.  Its far far from perfect but I think we’re safer as a result.  Go tell the families of the 7/7 victims about the pointless war.

  • The invasion of Afghanistan was 6 years before 7/7. I think the major reason for 7/7 happening was because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The victims of 7/7 would probably still be alive if it wasn't for those wars.

As for the state of Afghanistan today? Let's talk about that a year after the troops leave.

  • The invasion of Afghanistan was 4 years before 7/7, it was shortly after 9/11, the Richard Reid attempted shoe bomb, and shortly before the Bali bombings.  Radicalisation began long before the troops invaded Afghanistan and to say otherwise is to ignore or twist the facts.  Its been shown that the seeds for the London plot were before Afghanistan.

  • Yes my mistake. 7/7 was 2005 and not 2007. Otherwise it would have been 7/7//7

  • It seems very logical doesn't it?

  • 7/7 could have been a reprisal for the Afghanistan invasion, equally had we not invaded it could have taken place anyway, and been just the start of a much bigger terrorist campaign.  Who's to know but id rather hedge my bets on the latter and its certainly the case that young muslims are no longer travelling to Afganistan to learn how to make bombs.

We shouldn’t be dissuaded from doing the right thing or taking action in fear of reprisals.  Appeasement rarely delivers in the long term, which takes us back to the 2nd World War, Churchill vs Chamberlain, you seem to be making the argument for Neville Chamberlains approach in this thread.

  • Difference being Russia.
