I can see what Mr Fegan was trying to do, I'm kind of with FB on that.

Re the sub 3 thread thing, it was set up by numpties trying to go sub3 and is still a very popular thread now with lots of sub 2:30 folks now. Lots of lurkers say they like reading the thread even if they dont apsire to run sub3, I'd be the same with a sub11 or sub10 type IM thread. I'm interested in what the fast folks do, even if I dont want to join in (or arnt good enough to)..

Re the marketing stuff, promotional codes for kit, equipment on line would be one matter, but I bet folks would be more interested if Mr Fegan could secure 20% off the entry fee for everyone at something like the Outlaw. Might be wrong, but I think Pirates have tried to secure preferential entry fees before. Is that much different from gear discounts ?

  • shit - that was a long read - its all appenin on 'ere innit. now, dare i go on facebook

If a sub-10 thread on here gets too many bullshitty comments, just set up a cheap website to store info about racing/training etc., and you can have a forum on it for discussion. I'm sure it can't be that hard or costly to do, then everything is in one place?

I think that was the initial point. and it got pretty much jumped on and a number of 'go to tripetalk' comments already.

    Funkin's also already a sub-10

did he sub-10 at Roth?? if so, I forgot that

    IMUK - by 5 secs

  • I think there would be a fair few people interested in a sub 10 thread for training tips and ideas rather than the time itself if that makes sense ...we have a fair few who are tweaking the nose of the lower numbers and I am sure there are people in the sub 3 thread who are there or thereabouts

Would the speedier pirates frequent the thread ??

  • Good question meldy. Care to start a list?

BTW just to clarify this for me....so there's zero rules and that's a huge part of the appeal of something which actually doesn't exist cos otherwise there would be some sort of rules but as soon as someone wants to do something that's kind of against something but we'd best not call it rules cos there aren't any (and that's the appeal remember) then that's just not cricket...but it's okay to have an Elitist Shield (which is an annual club of one per gender which kind of sounds a little more Elitist than the proposed Race for Life Team) and all the other awards and developments that weren't there at the outset?  I presume the annual outing idea came free with the Pringle tube. Okay got it.

    As you were.

  • Its about time you were on a list   image

Padams (of the sub3 thread) went sub 9:30 at Kona this year, MTriton (of the sub3 thread) did ~9:30 at Barcelona recently. It would be good to get folks like those to join in.

  • TR...they are on tritalk aren't they..but i think there is a lot more cross over nowadays between the two forums.........i have seen a number of pirtaes on that site.....and some tritalkers post on here.

i think in the past there might have been some stupid comments on a fast thread.,but nowadays I think we love the fact that there are some fast pirates that kick arse.........and most people would love to follow discussions about their training even if we couldn't understand it all.

  • I'd read it and I think would likely get some inspiration from it too

Its got to be worth a try   image

No, I'm not starting it !

Seren - Padams posted on the TT Kona thread (as he was going there too), MTriton posts on TT more now as he runs stand alone marathons less, I think that he won a DIM somewhere this year (he's a nutter like TC).

  • i have seen MTriton post on TT on a few threads i am on....I love following fast peoples reports.,,,

  • Mtriton won this years double at enduroman, looked amazing all the way

  • i would be quite interested for a sub 10 thread, for a half that is

Gary has referred to having a guide which could be referenced. I think this is a great idea.
We all would like to get faster ( wouldn't we?).  The vast amount of often conflicting advice on the internet about training zones, bpm, ftp, threshold, lactate, aerobic, anaerobic,LSD, zone 1,2,3,4,5, junk miles etc etc just leaves many confused and so just resort to the old swim a bit, bike a lot, run a bit type training. If this guide could plot a course through this training maze I am sure many on here could benefit.

If its just a "sub 10" thread it will go straight over most of our heads.

As for the commercial side, I don't think that was really Garys intention.

I can only speak for myself, but as a helm-stealing, sell-out, plagarising, sport-sullying, elitist, money-grabbing, commercialised, po-faced, naive, cliquey seperatist, who spends her time grinding the sport's slower pond scum under the heel of my shoe and worshiping at the alter of celebrity and freebies, I would have to say Nope, I'm not interested.

    Cant think why?

Well, there is the sheer tedium of the idea. I'm bored already.

  • Do you want to consider for a while ??   image

  • I think it's interesting that the call for a sub 10 thread came from people who were unlikely to contribute to such a thread (although they may like to draw from it), whilst those people who are the most likely contributors remained silent on the issue.

    Although, is this surprising?

I can't help but think that in this debate one of the outcomes has been to marginalise the pirates who can/do go faster over long distances.  Is it really so wrong for them to have a vehicle which will support and faciliate them performing to their highest ability through the informal club/community whose colours they may have raced in for some time?

Furthermore, it saddens me a little that it is only through the discussion of a contentious issue such as this that some of the most well respected (!?) and long standing pirates have been drawn out to comment.  I think it is a great shame that we don't see more of them, as they have useful contributions to make to the triathlon forums.  For whatever reasons they stopped posting, I wish they would come back.

  • Well there's a thread now. If people want to use it, they can. If they don't, they won't. Either way it doesn't preclude any other action which may or may not occur and may or may not be "officially" sanctioned.

    image

  • To clarify, my paragraph regarding a 'vehicle' refers to the team, not a sub 10 thread.

  • i think the problem was that two seperate things were brought forward at the same time.......

having an elite group to help each other and those trying to get at the top age groupe end......was the first part and not many thought this was a bad thing......although it wasn't clear how it would work as it was wanted as a permanent thing but not as a thread......I missed the part that explained where and how it would work.

the second part involved other companies and getting some deals done etc.......and this is where the problem lay as most people couldn't see how we could get something from companies without losing part of the pirate ethos.........and thats where the sponsorship and logo debate came in........once again because it wasn't explained how it would work and why companies would give something for nothing in return.......if it was just a write up they wanted a dozen pirates would be willing to do that for free.........so whats the gain for the company.....

so i think that without explanation of how these things work people make their own assumptions on what they know from experience......

so better communication would have helped..but the debate is interesting because I haven't seen so much posting from so many pirates in a 24 hour period for a long time......

Yeah, I got that. I was just saying that whether there's a thread or not doesn't really change what Fegan was talking about. Some people said it would be a good idea, so I made one. If they were wrong, it won't last long! image

  • Mouse & Seren, agreed

For whatever reason people have stopped posting (and I do appreciate these are many and varied) it is seemingly the controversy that is attractive  image

  • I'd like to second wot Mousers sed.

  • Double + 1 to Seren and M..o.use.

About the elite race team, I dont get why that would be an issue. This is an individual sport and it is a time trial. These people already finish around 6h faster than me and that is a fact and it makes them pretty experienced hardcore athletes in my mind.

There are many things that set them apart from me and it is not just ambition as I covet speed as much as anyone else. I hope we would not classify ourselves against them as we race ourselves, our athlete preparation and commitment.

I want to thank everybody who kept coming round this thread to quell the fire and to bring people together. Also like some of our cool girls, I wished we could see more of the Greats around. I understand their circumstances and individuality but I cant avoid the pull of wonder.

I am glad people cared enough to rectify the blatant misunderstanding that set this thread off. Kudos to all.

Well having just read this, it's not very bloody piratey is it!

That'll teach you to have an idea Mr Fegan you psychopath, your clearly unstable.
