Duathlon Help

So having never raced a duathlon, but have agreed to race one early next year, but its a pairs event, you are not allowed to be over 20 metres away from your racing partner, I was just wondering, do you go hard on the first run and try and recover on the bike for hard on the last run or is it more of an overall effort all the way through?

  • SA - I've see Cat race - for him its more a gentle plod all the way round at what looks like Meldy's IM pace image

  • maybe Raf would like toi pair with Cat for the event at Cats easy pace image

  • It's a hard effort all the way through, SA.  The pace on the first run usually seems insanely fast and it's a fine line between getting it just right and overcooking it.  There's no real time to recover properly on the bike and you're just hoping to have enough left to get out of the blocks at a decent pace on the second run and hold on - it's only 5k after all for a standard distance.

If it's a pairs race though, I guess your run speed is dictated by the slower runner of the two, who's running closer to maximum speed and then gets to draft more on the bike (I assume you're allowed to work together as a pair on the bike leg?).

  • Maybe we should have a pirate team?image

  • if its the one I'm tyhinking of then yes you are allowed to draft on the bike image

  • Yes, you are allowed to draft on the bike image

  • Hey, where's my santa smiley gone?

  • What CD said. It's traditional to go balls out on the first run and bike then blow up completely on the second run! Will be interesting to see how the pairs thing works.

Might be a good race for you Raf if they allow drafting... image

  • Have just find out that the bike takes in sheep house lane, do they allow tow ropes?

The distance is just a tad longer than standard distance I think

4 mile run 21 mile bike 4 mile run

Given that the other end would be attached to me, a tow rope would be pretty feckin' useless!

  • I looked at that one...hilly...but got no mates, so went for the parbold duo the week before.

Standard distance is 6 miles 25 miles 3 miles give or take.

Duathlon is harder than a oly Tri. You don't go much slower than your pb on the first 10k if you are fit.  It's just hang on from the start

  • Is this the fire fighters one in march

i was fancying it,just trying to talk a mate at work into it

I thought about this, but it is horrendously up North.

  • If you don't go much slower than your PB on the first 10k and just hang in there (mind-blowing), how do you approach the long-distance duathlons?

In fact, what long-distance duathlons exist in the UK besides Powerman?

And lastly, why does a duathlon training/events etc thread not exist on this board?

bar Powerman I don't think there are any LD du's in the UK

and why not start the thread yourself??   I notice one has started up in Tripetalk recently so there's clearly a growing interest

The London Duathlon include a long distance event (I think it was 20k, 70k, 10k) and looking at the results from when I did it I was close to half marathon pace for the first run but I suffered on the last bike lap and the 2nd run, so in hindsight maybe I should have eased up a bit.

Long distance duathlons seem to vary between those with the longer run at the start (like the one above) and those with the longer run last (like Powerman).  Race tactics would be different for each, I'd guess.

The Ballbuster is longer than a standard duathlon, but i wouldn't call it a long distance race.

  • There's nothing wrong with using this thread. image

Yeah I've seen the ball buster 8 mile-24 mile-8 mile. Not overly-long distance but still a tough one.

I've just looked at the Powerman results from last year, only 22 competitors in the long course event, I can't believe the sport isn't more popular with people who are learning to swim or just don't want to swim.

There is the Pig duathlon this year: 6mi/105mi/20mi.

  • That looks like the hardest in the UK? Especially with it being a hilly region.

    When's your race Cat?

  • Pig is way too hardcore for me.

My race was yesterday, came 10th overall.

Other than XC league that's it now until my spring HM. Then the big build for spring Ballbuster and PowermanUK.
