Imodium (aka Loperamide) is an essential for me. .. Don't take it too early because you don't want to deter any 'last minute weight loss' before the start.
Known as "Race Day Bottom" in our house - ie when there is ahem, a comprehensive download of data prior to an event. Something to do with the "Fight or Flight instinct" I'm told ...
Best of luck to everyone doing Loch Ness this Sunday.
I have been stalking this thread for some time picking up tips along the way as I am planning on doing Loch Ness as my first marathon next year if I don't get in through the ballot for London.
Pete - I'd do a short run, taper is about reducing mileage not cutting it out altogether, just don't go too far or too hard! I did 4M at lunch today and will possibly do a short (2-3M) run on saturday or a longer dog walk at least.
AliB - I love your description! I just wish there was more glamorous place for this to happen than a portaloo! (although portaloo better than a tree I suppose!)
10km last night, and will jog round the Inverness Parkrun on Saturday before the big day.
My plan's 5-6 gels with a few emergency jelly beans, and a little bit of back-up water I'll try keeping in reserve for later in the run. Has been fun reading on everyone's quite different approaches to race day preparation!
I assume feeling really fat is a normal part of taper madness? Or have I just been consuming far too many kcals for the little amount of running I've been doing?
Andy - That's just your mind playing tricks on you. Just think of every training run you have done. That's what counts. Relax in the knowledge the hard work is done. You are ready for Sunday.
Just about to set off for Bristol airport. I'll see you guys and gals on the other side. Stay safe and stay relaxed. Remember we do this because we enjoy it.
Andy re feeling fat. I too am feeling somewhat bloated but I'm putting it down to PMT ( PRE MARATHON TENSION): eating/exercising ratio not quite what I've been used to, violent mood swings ( veering from excited anticipation to terrible lows "What was I thinking?") and a general lack of ability to focus on anything but those 26.2 miles. Complete waste of skin at work.
Possible relief might come from a night in front of TV ( Strictly Vs Gogglebox quandry at 9pm ) . Oh, and maybe the nitrates in that beetroot juice will alleviate some symptoms???
Hey all, sorry I haven't had time to post but have been lurking and am a regular with the paris marathon thread. We've got a crew heading up and will all be celebrating/comiserating and everything in between at Johnny foxes, 26 bank st, IV1 1QU from 6~. Look out for medals, stool (3 legged variety) flags and general hilarity. Everyone is welcome!! We'll keep an eye on this forum and looks like a few of us will also be at the expo mid afternoon on sat 3~ and for a photo at 7:15 by the buses on sun morning. Look for the flags. If don't see you have a brilliant race!!! It's a lovely marathon with an awesome start. (I was meant to be running but injured my hip so just doing the 10km now. LN was my first marathon in 2007...sooo long ago now).
Last run before Sunday this morning. A gentle 5km at marathon pace. Completely relate to the "feeling fat" comments above. My moobs have grown dramatically in the last week!! Am putting it down to water retention!
Having never done this before I'm surprised how mentally tough tapering is. It feels totally counter initiative to reduce distance before a run. I'm now having major self-doubt.
Lots of Oh.... comments, c'mon girls n guys, this is what we've been training for.
Get excited forget the worries you've been training for months for this race. Don't be nervous this is the best time, you've done all the work, you now just get to have a fun excited, chill out time, and then get down to business at 10AM on Sunday and then spend the evening staring at your medal going is that really mine!! Relax the work is all done.
Thing I'm most fearing is the getting up at stupid o' clock to get the bus, think I deserve a medal just for that. Can't remember the last time my alarm was set for a time in the morning that began with a 6, and it'll be a early 6 as well... Marathon will seem easy in comparison, especially since I might be sleep running some of it.
Oh well can't talk the organisers into having a later start now
I had a dream last night that I ran the marathon and came in 2 minutes faster than my expected time and I really enjoyed it and was still smiling and buzzing at the end. It was the most positive dream I've ever had.
Clearly I should stop worrying and enjoy myself. So thats what I'm going to do. I've never done this before so I'm always going to get a pb.
Ok, here is the flag. Its just a piece of laminated A4, so not enormous. Its will be sticking up higher then anyone's head though, so you should spot it. I will be near back of the queue for coffee/tea
Looking forward to running in beautiful Scotland and looking forward even more to one or two single malts afterwards! Can anyone recommend some decent places to go in Inverness? I believe the forecast isn't too bad for Sunday so fingers crossed.

Or like BT says man up and don't listen to the never run this far in my life before man!

blame it on having to pay for the Spine Challenger
I've all but forgotten about miles and kilometres since I started to run to time - find it much more satisfying and relaxing
BT, I'm ok with most Single Malts and always happy to try a new expression. Provided I win of course

Finished up with a funky 4. All done now till Sunday. Miles or kilometres......I work in units of it's a long way.
6.8 done this evening - that's it now until Sunday!

My local parkrun posted this yesterday, made me smile!

Jo - that made me laugh out loud.
ABB3 - the only thing that beetroot alleviates for me are the effects of Imodium
Crazy mood swings but mostly just excited. I cannot believe that I can still run a long way - its been such a long time since the last proper LSR
