Find it very frustrating that Virgin can't just tell us when the GFA applications will open. Still says refer back in June. It is June. Last year I missed the 2 week window they finally came up with. Everything has to be scanned in on line, gone are the good old days of posting your entry!! Keep checking the website folks.
Good luck everyone with your entry whether by ballot or gfa or something in between, we have our places confirmed so will see you all at Blackheath in April Have a good year
Haven't been on here for a few years and having a quick glance through some of the comments today reminded me why....
No, GFA is NOT attainable for anyone who can train 5 times a week. I had a similar 'discussion' with some sub-3 boys who said that it was achievable to anyone who put the training in. Running at a fast pace for a long period of time is dependant on a load more things than 'training hard and regularly'. Your genes and running gait are just as important. Take a thoroughbred horse for example; A five furlong sprinter with a fast action gait will never win the Grand National over a soggy 4.5 miles, irrespective of the training programme it is put through. I have just completed Ironman Wales and I guarantee you that the 2.4 mile sea swim alone would be beyond many 'normal' people, regardless of how hard they trained. I would never be so condescending as to suggest to anyone that 'yeah, if you put the proper effort in, mate, you could do it.'
So there you have it - Runner's World is still full of ignorant blockheads, talking drivel and full of their own p**s & importance... I don't know why I bothered returning. Byeeeee!!
Well said Safety!! I made a similar comment a few pages back but a couple of regular posters on here shot me down. It's as if you don't count as a runner unless you are elite.
Yesterday I saw a T-shirt that said " a 12 minute mile isn't any shorter than a six minute mile". I think it may be my new mantra...
I can report that there are other, very active, threads which are far, far more inclusive and supportive so don't give up on the whole site Congrats for the Ironman too!
I'm with Millsy on this. I doubt there are many examples of normally healthy runners who put in 5 days a week of running consistently over a period of several years and who eat properly who couldn't dip under a GFA time. The times are good, but they are far from "elite". Much easier to say others are blessed with better genes or running gaits than to stick in and turn 12 minute miles into faster ones over a few years. Generally you get out what you put in with running performance. The reality is that most people's genes and gaits are not so abhorrent as to preclude good running. Most people's diets, commitment to training, lifestyle and general outlook probably are.
The gfa for me is sub4 and I've done that once, several years ago. However, if I keep going and don't deteriorate terribly over the next five years I should be able to stay sub4.30. Woohoo!
Unless you have some inherent talent a GFA target of 3:05 is a tall order. Have got a half time of 1:28 & been trying for 8 years, still can't get within 15 minutes of it. If a training plan was accomplished without any injuries and if absolutely everything went perfect on the day it may be feasible.. IMO it's not attainable for everyone.
Womble78, with a 1.28 half and a little bit more training I reckon you could be there or there abouts.
I don't think anyone said its attainable for EVERYONE. My post suggested the MAJORITY of regular runners.
Unfortunately for you (and me) the male under 40 category seems to be the stiffest target. If you were born in 78 you still have years of running ahead of you.

Or you could ask one of the many other charities.

October starts tomorrow, so isn't it time to start the annual ballot hysteria?
Nothing from VLM in my post today...

the over 50 men was the hardest group until the gave it an extra 5 mins last year.
still 3:20 for a 58 yr old man is tougher than 3:15 for a 41 yr old man so stop moaning Millsy...
has anyones cheque been cashed yet
Magazines are arriving judging from a post on twitter with the rejection cover.
Magazine of doom is arriving at people's homes as we speak
so wonder who is going to be a superhero this year?
Anyone got the link for payment? Usually can see from that before the dreaded thud arrives through the postbox??
This is my 10th ballot. Now that it's not going to be that convenient next April, I bet I get in.
I was looking for the payment link before but cant seem to find anything?
