Who owns Sweatshop ?

I bought some shoes from Sweatshop recently and the transaction has just appeared on my bank statement.

The payment is to "SPORTSDIRECT.COM". Don't tell me Sweatshop is owned by Sports Direct....

  • They've owned 25% of them for years. Maybe they've upped that

  • Websites virtually identical with very similar stock

That is why a proper running shop sticks krappimor shoes on it's website and list krappimor branding as a technology.

Its 'branding'. If a name sells, keep it.

Once there was a nice little product with a comfy name. They get bought by a bigger company, which in turn is owned by another even bigger company, and so on.

The name stays and becomes bigger than the now completely different product.

Meanwhile the public still thinks its buying the product their grand parents did.

    🙂

  • Does it matter who owns what brand name? It's the people in the stores that make the stores. I don't care what name is on the door if they sell the product I want, and if I want advice I'll ask the internet not a store sales person.

  • This would explain why I saw a lot of Karrimor clothing (which I love) in my local Sweatshop last week

It won't be long until they start trying to push everyone towards the Karrimor shoes like they currently do in Sports Direct.
  • From the Sweatshop Terms and Conditions on their website

Branding is not a technology though. The fabric of the krappimor clothing is fine but the cut is awful. The shoes are ok but are overpriced even with the alleged/bogus huge discount.

I do buy from sports direct, and even had some krappimor shoes for walking the dog once. The were fine except the my fell apart once they got wet. Map patently the cardboard under the insole does not like getting wet.
  • I bought some Karrimor trail shoes from Sports Direct recently and they've been great - comfortable and durable. For £40. I look at Asics and they're twice the price or more when the Karrimor work fine. I'll get three months out of these and buy a new pair.

  • the fact is they arent the same great quality that Karrimor were famous for/...

the best bit about sweatshop being in cahoots with SD is that from sweatshops website you can order stuff to be delivered to store for free where as SD dont offer this option. so if you want krappimor stuff you can order it from sweetshop, get it delivered into store quickly and for free, then actually get a refund if you dont like it instead of s crefit note from SD(who refuse to give a refund unless the item is faulty, you are 80 years old and accompanied by both sets of grandparents.

  • Mike Ashley bought another 25% shares of sweatshop a year or two ago apparently And now has controlling shares over Sweatshop.  He also owns 10% of Debenhams now too allegedly.

  • how long will the refunds last with sweatshop.I buy a number of things from sports direct but its near on impossible to get refunds even when faulty

  • I believe Sweatshop's policies regarding returns & no questions 30 day exchange on shoes have changed recently (past month). I also believe they now charge a fee for their click and collect service. This coupled with my local shop being inundated with Karrimor stock replacing the more established running brands has driven me elsewhere. If I wanted Karrimor items, I have 3 large Sports Directs locally thanks, don't need a mini store

  • I bought shoes from Sweatshop today and was definitely told the 30 day exchange is still going.

  • The 30 day exchange is still in place however it is subject to the Manager's discretion rather than the previous 'no questions' system. A new sign was put up by the till in my local store to this effect approx 4 weeks ago

  • Sounds like the manager has a target for returns levels so go early in the month if you take something back before they hit quota.

the no quivble refund is when they advise/pick yiur shoes and probably sell you an insole for £40 too, which insures them in case you do need to hand the shoes back.

  • No Gideon you are not forced in to buying insoles

sorry but we do talk some elitist bullshit, who cares as long as they sell what you want at a price you want.

  • I've got Karrimor shorts, vest, tights, jacket and gloves. I'm happy with how they all perform. Great price too. Not all runners can afford to wear branded gear. I make sure I spend as much as possible on shoes (which are currently Nike Lunar Forever 3) and then compliment them with affordable clothing. Usually Karrimor. Come at meimage
  • Delighted you're satisfied with Karrimor products,honestly....however my point is...I can buy Karrimor in 3 large stores in my city should I wish. If Sweatshop stock Karrimor rather than other brands, my choices become more limited. I accept that we pay more for better products because it is a specialist running store & staff have more run specific knowledge/training than Sports Direct and they almost always are runners therefore more likely to understand our needs...Whereas 'He runs,She runs',is more like he runs, she runs over to Greggs to get lunch every day.

  • If they start to replace current lines with Karrimor then I agree with you. However, if those brands have sold well in the past surely they'd continue to stock those too? In which case it just expands their range and gives the consumer more choice. And for me, you only need staff knowledge/support when looking at shoes. Clothing is clothing, you can't go far wrong. Does it fit? Does it wick? Is it the correct layer? Does it look good? I'm a relative newbie to running so forgive me if I'm wrong...
  • VDOT52VDOT52 ✭✭✭
Booktrunk- the first time I went into sweatshop the sales assistant would not even let me try on shoes without doing the insole fitting first. The second time I went in the guy did not even mention them. I guess it depends who you get.

Oh and I assume that you were using the Royal 'We" in your other comment, or are you assuming we all talk elitist bullshit?image
  • Rich, that's precisely what's happening, the shop isn't getting larger, they are putting Karrimor shoes/apparel where there used to be Nike,Adidas,Saucony,Mizuno et al. So rather than expanding choice, you are getting the same Karrimor product in it's wealth of colourways. Like all High St clothing, running wear varies wildly from brand to brand size wise and I have also used the product knowledge from Sweatshop staff who have actually worn the stuff for it's designed purpose in assisting me with purchases.

    Remember what happened to Karrimor.

    It went bust! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karrimor#Post-receivership_and_Sports_Direct

As of 2013, the Karrimor brand remains and is licensed and used for marketing and product branding purposes. Sports Direct continue to sell Karrimor branded products, which are as of 2013 largely made in China rather than the UK.

Basically buy a respected name and continue like nothing happened!

  • Will they still give the standard 10% discount for club members?

  • ToroToro ✭✭✭

Oh and next people will be surprised how many companies Nestle etc own.

    http://www.gondolaholdings.com/

Talk about monopoly: ASK, Pizza Express and Zizzi but then you read https://www.thecaterer.com/articles/346539/caterer-and-hotelkeeper-100-jonathan-kaye-prezzo-chimichanga

"His cousins are Adam and Sam, founders of pizza chains Ask and Zizzi, which they later sold to PizzaExpress owner Gondola Holdings."  Anyway back to work tomorrow tax drones... repeat after me "I am free"...

  • Had noticed that Sweatshop is more like SportsDirect in selling Karrimor stuff, hope they don't change into Sports Direct - uninterested staff selling loads of XXL replica football kits! Think i should find a different shoe store.

I've had a pair of casual trainers and work boots made by Karrimor and both were absolute trash and did not last. I like their running socks though!

Also went to Millets the other day and receipt was from JD Sports. Sadly only a handful of companies own a lot of our high street shops.

  • VDOT52VDOT52 ✭✭✭

didnt know millets and JD were hooked up!
