Old duffer - I am the same and probably won't be participating. May just do the swim then withdraw if I feel up to swimming. Will be there supporting if not participating
Any good bike mechanics out there, just been out to test the bike after my little accident and the hanger dangly bit seems to be catching on the spokes in certain gears, the important ones for going uphill. Not sure if just trying to bend it is a good idea or if things will break, knowing the sort of week I have had it would be more likely to break.
Pirate support today was great - thank you all. Apologies if I appeared a little unresponsive but I could either run or speak and the running took precedence I did try to thumbs up or wave ever pirate whether supporting or competing, honest.
Not long home. Short story - all absolutely fine until just after half way through swim when asthma started. Managed to finish the swim though it did take three stops with a safety canoe (allowed as no progress made during them). Walked through to T1 as breathing was bad. Was really, really cold (have heard lake was 15C) and shivering so much for the first half of the bike course that it felt as if my front wheel was loose. Eventually warmed up and passed loads and loads of people (unsurprising given the poor swim and T1), bike split was averaging 19mph for the first two hours but slowed a little after that, mainly due to the course I think, to finish with a 18.1mph average. T2 was an improvement and nearer my usual (2.06) and I managed to do the run in 1.48.44 - not bad on half a lung. Finished in a disappointing 5.51.46. Unfortunately there then followed a considerable amount of time in the medical tent with a couple of nebulisers, steroids and some other drug I haven't heard of - think it began with an I and sounded a little like ibuprofen - and an enforced visit to A&E - where they took no further action.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
Well done everyone, some great performances and some deserved good results (LittleClown, I'm looking at you).
Little Miss, sounds like you had a tough time of it, but well done indeed for coming back so strongly after suffering during the swim. Hope you get back to 100% soon.
Steady CJ, loving the pic on Outlaw's FB page of you crossing the line!
Support was absolutely incredible today guys - really gave me a lift every time I saw the little crowd of yellow and the jelly babies were greatly appreciated! Sorry I didn't get a chance to thank everyone in person - had to disappear fairly quickly as my other half wanted to get home (4am start and a long drive - not a good combo!). Really hope I can return the favour some day and support you at an event!
LMH - blimey, didn't realise you had been taken off the A&E - hope you are ok now, take it easy for a few days! Massively well done to you for finishing - must have been hard to slog it out with the asthma

There should be a bike mechanic available at registration, there will be a bike shop selling their wares

On a slightly different topic - any tips for removing race tattoos from sunburned arms?
