Hi everyone

I am due to run my 10th marathon in Spring 2015 - a bit of a milestone (although not in the league of many of you on here!)

I want to run my 10th anywhere in the UK and am happy to do this between April and June.

Other than London and Brighton (already done both twice), what would you all recommend?

Many thanks!

  • Lots of lovely Scottish ones... have done Lochaber (although it is an out and back so may not be preferable but is flat so good for a PB), Loch Ness (hilly but gorgeous) and Cape Wrath... an adventure in more ways than 1. Have also done Dublin which was also great!! So many to choose from... Happy hunting!!!image

  • Ooh, Cape Wrath sounds like a 'fun' challenge image I can recommend both Lochaber and Loch Ness (in Sept) as they are the only 2 I've done.

  • Ecce, CW is an experience!! You "have" to camp and you "have" to do the whole week culminating in the marathon which involves getting a boat after 22 miles back over the kyle for the final 4 mile run back to the community hall. It's a slog.. and can be a lonely run but the place is amazing and hopefully the weather is in your favour (it wasn't last year when I did it... miserable but made it all the more erm.. challenging!image). Great community though, if you like isolation and just gorgeous landscapes!! Amazing place... I reckon we will be backimage

  • Sounds like a mini Ultra image Might just put it on my 'to do before I'm 60 list'. As for the isolation and scenery I live in the inner Hebrides so goes without saying I like it image

  • Kind of Ecce... felt like it to me, it's a tough run!!! Not remotely flat and rough underfoot at timesimage Great challenge though... still a marathon PW for me but it wasn't really about times!!image

  • Sounds tough! do they stop the clock whilst your on the Ferry??

Trying to get back to the  OP, sounds like a cracking 10th Marathon for you Hampton image

  • Yes they stop the clock... it's more a rib you are on so only a few can get on at a time so you can have to wait, although not long. I thought I would hate having to stop, but I was actually grateful for the rest.image

  • Thanks for all the advice! Am seriously considering Lochaber. Any more final suggestions please?

  • Ooh check Lochaber closer to the date actually... it did run this year but have heard rumours it may not run in 2015 (nothing on the website as yet) due to "safety concerns" of having to run on the roadimage... just so you know, in case you are holding out for it. It is a great run though.

UTC- I heard that Lochaber was finished, too- someone mentioned it at the strathearn marathon.

2 other scottish possibilities, if you like countryside and hills are : strathearn- june, and Loch kAtrine- march. Any of the scottish marathons ( except Edinburgh) will be much more scenic and quiet than London

  • +1 for Loch Katrine.image How could I have forgotten? image

    Giants Head Marathon image

  • Manchester is a flat and fast one

Kent Road Runner marathon, that's in May, that is an awesome race very friendly bunch of people, I've been there 3 times now

    Milton Keynes beginning of May?

Like a few on here Lochaber was on my bucketlist but I can confirm due to safety reasons it is suspended indefinetly...booo.  There is a rather undulating (haha) trail marathon in fort william (good luck!) and Lock Katrine looks amazing.  Id do Berlin or Amsterdam..heck New York if you could or in England Manchester seems flat and wet image

  • ooh recommend Brathay Windermere Marathon Middle of May

It has a great atmosphere especially as you watch the 10 in 10'ers go off ( they do 10 marathons in 10 days ) it is very emotional and well worth seeing

it has the most fantastic scenery and it well supported

The lakes are just fantastic it was the first marathon that made me have goosebumps when I ran

I am signed up again for it ( will be my third year )

  • Manchester - April

    Liverpool - June

  • New Yoirk, New York - so good they named it twice. I think it the best supported in the world. Crowds are great, sceney spectacular but not flat. PB is Berlin, Just cos.... is London (but not as good as either)

Some of my amercian friends say Chicago. All the best!

  • I ran Lochaber a few years ago and really didn't enjoy it.

It's an out and back course where you turn around a traffic cone at halfway and then you realise how few people are behind you.

Massive logging trucks within a few feet of you as you run in the gutter on a camber.

Lack of marshalls at the end meant I had to ask people which way I should run.

Had a nice weeks holiday up there the week after though.

  • In the words of the Proclaimers: "Lochaber, no more".  There is a new Fort William one though in the same area but later in year I think.
