    Morning

What: about to jump in the pool for some aqua jogging

Why: hiked for 2 hours up a mountain yesterday, some non impact stuff will be good

    Last hard: parkrun on Sat

    Lyrics: yes

    LMH please stay upright

Panicking about my race on sunday now. My aim is to finish, but 30 hilly km is a loooong way...

    Have a good one all
  • The yak tracks are ace emzap - highly recommend them as a means of staying upright in the snow/ice. How about approaching the 30k a bit like an ultra, keep the pace steady on the flat, walk the ups and enjoy the downs?

Feels colder here this morning Alehouse. Enjoy meeting your target.

    Working later birks?

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • milder here now

  • Lyrics yes.

    Training no. Sore throat.

I've just ordered a set of cycling rollers. This could mean booking a slot in A&E.

  • That's brave Blisters!

    Shame OH.

Managed a two armed backstroke this morning and a sort of one and a half arm front crawl, not pretty but definite progress. Off to physio this afternoon.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

    Afternoon all,

I have just gone through 1900 miles for the year with todays run and also noted that I have secured my highest milage since May and still have a 10m to do tomorrow.

3 x 1K at 5k pace and then 5 x 200m fast... not the heaviest of sessions, but it has made me feel good, so I am happy....

Hope you feel better soon Blisters.

OH thats some harsh weather..... white out here with frost... was -3 on the track at 11am...

    Take care

  • Alehouse - there was a time when I thought your goal of 2014K was out of reach but you've done well to get there - impressive! image  Surely time for a wee rest when the goal is met?

Wasnt going to train today but found out the club were doing a session at 11 this morning - went along and joined in but never completed it.  It was on frozen grass and my heel was giving me a bit of bother.  Still, did 6 miles inc 10 x 1 min fast so something decent anyway.  That's me finished for the year at 2020 miles. image

    Lyrics, yes I think so.

  • Don: there were quite a number of times when I felt my target was out of reach! Won't be resting so much as backing off quite a bit. I have run over 10k on 18 of the last 22 days, out of necessity so the legs deserve something easier. Will be looking to gradually change my training, with the emphasis on gradually!

I can't remember whether we have discussed orthotics! The guy who operated on me plus two high level physios (in sport) blame the orthotics for the Achilles problem: they keep your feet in the same position so end up having a repetitive strain. They are not in favour of treadmill running for the same reason, although it is OK in moderation or as a last resort! Hope Mrs Don is enjoying hers!

Progress is rarely a straight line. There are always bumps in the road, but you can make the choice to keep looking ahead.

Interesting Ale, when I had my achilles issues a few years back I was told by the A&E specialist (who just happented to be well into all things achilles) advised me to avoid orthotics but use heel raisers instead.... that was close to 3 / 4 years ago now and have had very little issues since.... heel raisers are also a lot cheaper than orthotics....

PS looking forwardsa to seeing that final 5k going up on the board later, you have dpone very well to achieve your target, well done.

  • emzapemzap ✭✭✭
Wow well done ale, you've done well to reach the 2014 mark.

    Pool run was good.

LMH think I'll take your advice, though the run is 7 km up, 7 km down (then repeat) so perhaps will run/walk up the hills rather than just walk. Did some of that on my longer runs and it seemed to work ok.

Off for a BBQ now but it's so windy I think the meat may fly away...
  • I have heel raisers, too, RFJ! As recommended by the surgeon (he has operated on a number of UK athletes and other sports' people and is the guy that the GB team use in the north-west).

I would have been pleased to get near the target! So am delighted that I will exceed it. The last three months have been about progressive consistent consistency! A couple of hiccups on the way, e.g. chest infections, but have largely managed to keep niggles under control

Progress is rarely a straight line. There are always bumps in the road, but you can make the choice to keep looking ahead.
  • Hello guys and Girls.  Nearly 2015 so what is everyones target for next year?

My goals are pretty simple in order of expected completion. 95kg, 1.4* Half marathon, 4.10 marathon, Sub12 Ironman, 500 hours training by year end .

All relatively achievable especially if I get the first target nailed.

    What- 30 mins fartlek, 2500m swim D+D

    Why- Training plan said to!

    Last hard-Xmas day

    Last rest-23rd

    Evening

This cold has dented my charge to the end of the year bike wise as common sense has me ride off road and less instead of on road and I have been running more.

    What: 10 miles run d&d

20 or so on the cross bike over and around the local forest d&d

    Intervals PM

Why: Ice sucks on a main road and it is damn cold

    Last hard: Sunday

    Last rest: 15th Nov

    Lyrics: No
  • Cold, or more accurately compacted ice and snow, are definitely interfering with play at this end too Gobi.

Physio was pleased with progress in regard to range of movement but keeps telling me that it's early days - it's coming up to five months!!!! Fortunately she was quite adamant that running was not the cause of my increased pain levels and positively encouraged me to keep doing so.

Targets for next year chunky? I really don't know. I'd love that sub 3.15 marathon and sub 1.30 half but I'm not sure I can get my fitness/speed back in time for a crack at it at VLM though I'm also planning on running CPH again next year so can either try to peak for VLM or use it as a last long training run for CPH. Have my first six hour race (which should have been this year) and would hope to do well there.

Need to decide whether to continue with my 'run as much as I can without breaking' approach or whether to try something more structured, trouble is I usually break when I attempt speed work and am unable to hit race paces in training. With having had over three months out this year and maybe requiring another operation 'run as much as you can and see where that gets you' may be the sensible option.

If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Evening everyone, good to see you all after yet another hiatus from me.

2014 has been a lazy year for me with the odd 5k lunchtime run dotted here and there. I let my new job, Masters study, family life, plus some other family-related things take over completely. All valid things and something had to give. I've come to the realisation that I need to focus on myself a little bit. So, I'm getting back on the horse, so to speak.

My plans for next year are to complete Velothon Wales (120km) and then Ocean Lava 70.3 six weeks later. I will then be concentrating on writing up my Thesis so haven't planned anything after 1 Aug but I'm hoping that I will enter the Cardiff Half Marathon in the October and aim for a new PB. Need to think about that one...

    What: 1hr turbo d&d
Why: Base training - first time on bike this year  - intention was to start on 5 Jan as away for a few days now but I took delivery of my new Garmin today! So, I officially get 31 weeks training for the 70.3.
    Last hard: Today
    Last rest: 2014
    Lyrics: familiar but not sure

Looks like some good work going on in here by you guys...I'm looking forward to joining back in and catching up on what you are all doing.

    image

  • Heel raisers it is!!  If you guys are getting advice not to use orthotics, then that's good enough for me!  I shall purchase some asap.  Thanks image

  • Howdy

    What: 1.hr 30 swim

    Why: sore legs and training!

Don- I am so anti orthotics its ridiculous. suffered my whole childhood with them and the first time I am pain and injury free is without and actually with as minimal support as possible.

xx love you all my running buddies!

  • 4 moonlit miles tonight taking me to 1234 miles.

I quite like that number so I'll probably stick there until 2015image

Well done AH on 2014 in 2014
  • Evening!

Great to see you Alex! Stick around! Consistent consistency please! I have to say that I have always found that short runs are a big help when under pressure e.g. exams, deadlines to meet. Best way to break the day up.

In the 60s and early 70s nearly all shoes were minimalist: nobody had invented cushioning! It may be just an old guy remembering the "good old days" but there seemed to be far fewer injuries. I had years of wearing clumpy cushioned trainers after that, and for many years with orthotics...and always seemed to be injured. I have now gone back to the lighter shoes and by and large this seems to be working. Some of you will know BR and PRF and it works for them, too.

Mission 2014 was completed around 7 pm. Looking forward to 2015!
