XFR - Does that happen alot? The reported cases involving dogs are usually bites?
Not sure there is an answer to pushing people over beyond banning dogs over a certain size (as per Chimps suitcase test perhaps?)
There will always be risk of some damage to some people, but ridding the country (world?) of certain dog breeds based on size is surely not the answer.
They should ban those extendable leads. Do my head in. Not only do they not control the dog, you have the added risk of tripping over the bloody things
Well, as far as this afternoon's incident is concerned, these dogs weren't on a lead, and would not respond to the owner's commands. I do agree with Chimp's point about learning to drive and dog owning...this owner should not be allowed to be an owner. But heaven knows how you legislate for that.
I'd favour sanctions against the particular dogs and/or owner rather than blanket measures against all dogs or certain breeds. After all cars cause far more death and injury than dogs but we don't ban cars because of it. In this case I think there is a case for both of the alsations to be destroyed - I don't like saying so because I have dogs myself but you can't have animals attacking people.
MK: Mak and Spice are sorry that you had a bad dog experience, but wish to point out to all those with anti-dog sentiment that not all dogs bite people, just the same as not all people stab runners.
Thanks, M's F. I don't blame the dogs in question at all. From what I know about dog behaviour, they were doing what they thought was right, and it's the stupid owner who hasn't taught them who's boss.
I would guess you could legislate it the same way you do for driving.
I don't recall anyone expressing "anti dog" sentiment, Mak's friend - just anti-getting bitten/pushed over by dogs sentiment. Hardly unreasonable is it?
I disagree XFR, some of these threads have been anti-dog. Recommending the destruction of some breeds (all Alsations?) is probably an over-reaction. And the argument about all dogs pushing kids over strayed towards the ludicrous. Maybe we should kill all Yorkshire Terriers because of the risk of spraining an ankle if you step on one...
Punish the owners of dogs that hurt people. I used to have a Springer Spaniel. He never bit anybody. Didn't jump up against anyone. Never tripped anybody over. Didn't hurt a soul. Because I didn't let him.
Most dogs are like this. Well behaved and well kept. We shouldn't hate them because SOME dogs are badly owned.
(Meer, you have my sympathy - I'm sorry to hear about your experience).
An un-muzzled Rotweiler chasing you is enough to make any dog owner/lover/carer consider the muzzling of dogs as a simple solution to what is becoming a social menace IMO.

I made that word up.
Do you like it?
Mind you, a muzzle for Dodge...Hey, we might be on to something!!!!!
(only kidding, Dodge)
a few years ago i read about some pikey who was found dead in his house
he had previously had a 'pit bull' terrier, but he got rid of it because it wasn't nasty enough, and traded it for a really nasty alsation
the new dog tore him apart and partially ate him, the police had to shoot it through the window to retrieve the body
better him than an innocent member of the public
I like 'pikey' almost as much as I like 'numpty'.
Still think all dogs should be muzzled though regardless of percieved danger.
Would be very simple to enforce, dog in public with no muzzle = on the spot fine.
a large dog with a muzzle on could easily knock over a small child, who smashes his head open on the pavement?
No thanks.
You ain't seeeeeeeeen a dog 'til you've seen the one N(S)icko and I saw at Grim this morning!

Muzzling would at least solve the biting problem.

Hmmm... maybe we SHOULD kill all Yorkshire Terriers. But of grounds of taste, not health and safety...
I demand that some of the culprits attend an animal-love course. Otherwise I'll command the little Ewok in my photo to bite you on the ass.
If a dog bites someone and it's not serious (ie a bite on the behind) then the owner should be forced to attend a dog-training course.
In fact, what may nip the whole problem in the bud is to force nyone who wants to have a dog to sit an IQ test.
I've had to dance round out of control dogs before and it's not funny! :-(
