Oh, and but for the fact I work 5 days a week in an office where I cannot bring pets in (unfair to leave it on its own all day), I would be a dog owner, and would have no problem muzzling my dog - regardless of breed - if it made others feel safer.
Waapster, XFR's comment re. kids getting knocked over is not at all ludicrous. Twice in the last two months in this family... It happens, it hurts and it instills fear.
I've seen it happen too - it's pure chance that it's "only" knocking peeps over and not something more serious. And as Pantie says, it instills fear. I don't think peeps should have to put up with that.
When I was talking abotu anti-dog sentiment, I was referring to this thread, I can't say I've followed every other one. I think the post you referred to was taken out of context, if you read Dodge's subsequent post.
I get blamed for eveything including people not reading the entire thread which is especially daft given the main point I've been trying to get across about not blaming the dogs
Well, as the bitee in this case, I think the majority verdict has agreed with me: it's the owner's fault NOT the dogs'. I would not like to see my attackers destroyed, but I would like to see the owner banned from owning dogs.
I have a Springer Spaniel, and Jack Russell, and appreciate that the paths I walk them on are also popular with both both cyclists and runners alike, a simple 'DOWN!' command drops the Spaniel immediately, and the Russell keeps well out of the way, if there is any doubt, (small children etc) then they are put on a lead.
The bottom line with this is surely down to attitude and training.
As usual, its a case of a minority of owners spoiling things.
Ta MK. It's typical though. There's me fighting the good fight for once........I think sorenotcher may be onto something with the kids on leads. How often do dogs snap at kids after the kids have stuck their chubby little fingers into the poor animals eye? That bit never makes the papers though.
dogs on leads and kept under control in public spaces fine
and dogs with attitude /big mouths/ nippy natures -muzzled in public too
irresponsible /arrogant /selfish / ignorant dog owners ( those who think it s your fault if they cant keep their dog under control) should be destroyed !
We loved our border collie (as some of you who know about my tears over another doggy thread will be aware), but knowing that they can be a bit of a dodgy breed, I made it quite clear to the whole family that if he ever bit anyone he would be off to the vet, no questions asked.
Of course I did Dodge! And he never did bite anyone. But I have the attitude that animals, however we try to domesticate them, are still wild creatures, and so it's impossible to legislate for every eventuality.
Who's talking about punishment? If a dog bites someone I don't think there's any other choice. Jeepers, I wish I hadn't bothered Dodge. Are you being deliberately obtuse or is this a difficult subject area for you?
If you put a dog down because it bit someone, assuming it hasn't turned into some sort of mad dog, I'd call that a punishment and quite a severe one. Just because we've decided to domesticate them and bring them more closely into our world doesn't, to me, give us the right to destroy them when they display some of their natural tendencies. It's the same as when you get idiots who try to keep lions or whatever. I mean, a lion mauling someone who'd have thought it?
In an ideal world it would be the owner who'd be euthanased, in the same way that a parent is held responsible for the misdemeanours of a minor, but as that is illegal, and as no-one should have to go about in fear of dogs, euthanasing the dog is the only option, IMHO.
