morning everyone, amazed to see this debate still going strong, and for the most part being taken seriously, though i've got nothing against having a laugh at racism/racists etc. steve, just to echo dodge's question.who do feel plays the "victim of racism" card to be in the limelight?
ahh, so you think "people" meant only one particular ethnic group? Thats very narrow minded. Tut-tut! "People" actually meant a few do-gooders from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
sorry steve, your original post was a little ambiguous.you could have clarified that point.but still don't really get what you mean by do gooders. don't think dodge or myself were being narrow minded at all.no offence taken
racist, classist, fattist, ageist, what's the difference?
If looks could be could be classified like all those above, we would have lookist as well. Why are the cover girls always good looking? Or graduate employees at city professional firms. They never employ ugly graduates. (they do however employ black ones).
No you didn't, but you are trying to get me to say all asians, all white people or all indians.

For instance, on a government form they ask; Are you: British, White & Black Caribbean, Irish, White & Black African, English, White & Asian, Scottish, Black & Asian.
Now why do they need this information? Surely it is better to select people NOT knowing this information? But because they have statistics to keep up with, they discriminate against the poor soul who happens to be in the wrong ethnic background. Regardless of skills of ability.
Why do they have to keep statistics? Because they know that if they don't employ enough of one group they will be accused of racism.
When I employ people for a project, I don't want to know what colour they are, where they are from, their age, their religion, I don't even care what their name, I just need to know their skills!
Steve, when you say 'these sort of thoughts don't enter normal people's heads' were you referring to 'thoughts' such as the irrelevant examples of people objecting to teaching kids history or Baa baa black sheep or whatever? No one mentioned anything like this. And who are 'normal people'? To disregard an accusation of racism as PC nonsense from meddling do-gooders who are just p**sed off cos they're not in the limelight is exactly the kind of attitude that ensures we still live in a racist society. Correct me if i'm wrong.
The truth is that we are all racist to one degree or another. Everyone! Even those that say "Oh, I'm not racist. Some of my best friend are (fill in race of choice but usually Black)." Being racist isn't just about shaving off your hair and bottling someone.
They take statistics of everything Steve. You can get statistics on almost everything - all kinds of useless carp. Anyway, your sex and ethnic background are important.
I agree Dodge. I got upset at Steve because I have known people who have used similar arguments as an excuse to be racist or ignore racism. Steve, I'm not saying you're racist, but you need to acknowledge the nature of what we've been talking about here. You seem to be denying the presence of racism in certain areas, and as dodge says, sometimes it's not always that obvious.

You're wrong, Carold. It happens all the time, unfortunately. There are those who automatically think that they didn't get the job/promotion/whatever simply because of ethnicity/religion etc and not because of competence. Such people promote racism by finding it where it doesn't exist.

I enter as many as I can and finish as high up the field as possible! :-)
I just hate racism and I also hate people who assume they are discriminised just because they aren't in the limelight.

Now is that a racist statement?
