Action shots!!! Brilliant. Not sure if Trin1 is smiling demurely or gritting her teeth in a very determined way...
  • Brilliantly well done to all who ran at the weekend - those times are proper running times and something to be proud of!

Trin and Yeo - fascinating to see the photos!! And thanks for your appreciation towards marshals. Our club also held a 20 miler yesterday and being on the east coast had to contend with sleet showers and flash flooding of a couple of dips in the course. Some of our marshals were out in it for almost 5 hours and I know that thanks and kind comments really help at the best of times let alone on a day like yesterday.
  • Just thought I would let you know how I got on at Reading yesterday, I came in at 2:11:25. I'm pretty pleased with this for my first race ever and after only 10 weeks of training! Not feeling too bad today either. Once again thanks for your help and support.
  • That's good news, Gibby.
Never mind "pretty" pleased, allow yourself to be "well chuffed"! Savour the experience.

    Hope you keep it up.

    CB
  • Well done Gibby.. sounds like you were training for about as long as me - I know how hard it was trying to run through the weather yesterday so it's a great achievement to keep egging yourself on towards the finish! Brilliant :)
  • You're right CoachB, I am well chuffed, and I was thouroughly enjoying myself right up until the heavens opened. As Dan and Caren will no doubt agree, running throught that weather was just awful!

I also just wanted to say that I thought the support from the crowd throughout the race was fantastic, they stayed out to cheer us on during the rain and snow, and it was very much appreciated!
  • absolutely.. I could not believe the supprt from the crowd, all of them were cheering you on. The people handing out the drinks were freezing, but so supportive it was great!

A funny thing, the one person who was meant to come out to see me, missed me cos I was ahead of schedule when I got to Russel St (the long hill)! She (and her housemates) got soaked, and never even saw us run! HEHE.
  • Gibby, another fantastic performance this weekend, well done!

Dan, I love your piccy, though more the colour of the Mekon than Dan Dare?

Very inspirational - I hadn't realised it was your first! One thing I find great about running, and it seems to be common on here, it makes you so positive - a few months ago it was run??? me???? no way! Now I feel, yes I can do it.

One nice thing (or is it two nice things?) about this forum is there's other people just like you/me/oneself out there and the flip side of that, we're all different too. Err - do you see what I'm trying to say?
  • Morning all!
yes pippi I think I understand what you are trying to say, the forum is very supportive and kind to all, whether you are a 5 or 6 minute miler or a 12 to 14 minute plodder, everyone gets positive support and is taken seriously!!

Have a good one all :)
  • Hi all,

Hope you all have a good day, plodding, working, with children or whatever you are doing today.

I would love to be able to say that I am plodding again but unfortunately that is not the case. My back has well and truly packed up working at the moment. i can't even bend to put my own socks on or do up shoelaces. Its soooo stiff and painfull. More physio tomorrow. I hope that helps. I am walking like Lurch, so upright and stiff.

I went for a walk yesterday afternoon, which was nice in the sunshine. The back hurts to walk, but no more than at other times and it was good to be outside.

Am fed up with this now. Its just not funny. 5 days. Boo hoo!!

  • Awwwwww, larraine!
Hope your back's "back" to normal soon.
Telepathic physiotherapy (not bad typing for this part of the morning, eh?) beamin' it's way at ya!

When you do get back to plodding, reward yourself with one of those trips to the beach at Southend, won't you.
One of my favourite experiences is driving to my local beach (Saltburn, on the east coast near Middlesbrough-ish) when the tide's out and the sun is coming up. The golden shine off the wet sand is something that makes you feel really good. Makes plodding a real pleasure!

    Thoughts & hugs.
    CoachB
  • Thanks Coach. Sorry about whingeing.

Beach sounds good. Will do that.
  • that sounds nice.. anyone know any good beaches in Reading?! heheh :P
  • Can anyone tell me if this is usual: started running 4 weeks ago and managed a non-stop mile after 2 weeks (felt very smug!). Then did 1.5 miles the next week and it felt rather easy. Last night I barely managed a mile before walking. I've got my flash new trainers as well!! Don't want to get despondent and stop running but its all a bit frustrating... Any advice really welcome. Thanks.
  • Wooster:

Firstly, new trainers need bedding in. They'll hurt at first!!

Secondly, it really depends a lot on what you're eating , dehydration, weather, how tired you are, etc.. The differences in my running times can be very big depending on all these things. If you're consistent you should find you get similar (improving) results all the time.

Give yourself time to recover, if you're new to running then it can take a while for your body to recover (this will improve!). Invest in a heart rate monitor to see how well your body recovers initially, and take notice of how long it takes for the ache of the run [in your legs, heel, etc..] to disperse once you've been on a run.

Lastly, I'm no expert, so I am only talking from personal experience.

    ----

ok.. maybe that wasn't quite lastly. After my enjoyment of the Reading half this weekend I've been stupid enough to sign myself up for the British 10k in London on Aug 1st. I think I'm going mad :P
  • Admittedly Sundays run could have been affected by the 10 pints and a curry combo the night before. Will try again tomorrow and see what happens. I'm still quite pleased that I can run for a mile though as most I ever did at school was 400m!

I was thinking of the British 10K as something to aim for - looks like a nice course but looking at feedback on forums the organisation seems to let it down a bit.
  • Just a word DanD and Wooster, about the new trainers. They should never hurt! If they do then they're not right for you. When you first run in them they should feel perfectly comfortable and not rub or pinch anywhere. If you feel uncomfortable in them then stop wearing them and get yourself fitted at a specialist running shop for some better ones. If you run in badly fitting shoes you could end up with injury problems in feet, legs and back.
  • I got my trainers at Sweatshop as I over pronate and was keen to get the right ones for me. They have been a bit painful on my arches but I'm assuming my feet need to get used to having more support.
  • Be carefull, Wooster. If you are having pain running in them it might be a good idea to go back to the shop and tell them about it. I'm sure they would be willing to help correct the problem.
  • Morning everyone.. 2 mins left of it anyhow! ;)

Been to aerobics yesterday as rest day from plodding.

My niece has quit the running plan we are doing all togehter. :( But i'm ok running on my own now so will keep hard at it.

Had a quick scan of the postings (need to catch up)

    Trinity.. to hear you say:

I can still very clearly remember not being able to run 30 seconds - getting to 25 seconds and gritting my teeth a la photo - so I can't believe that I can now run for 2 hours!!!

Is soooo cool as when I started I too could only run 30 secs and am up to 5 mins so far, but it's good to know that I CAN do it.. and who knows maybe after my 2 5k races planned in July/september I'll make a 10k (maybe 2005 goal).

It's wonderful knowing that those u are congratulating were back where I started at some point! :)

Larraine, hope ur back eases off soon.. nightmare ((hugs))
  • larraine - after my first run these trainers have been no problem at all. I'm not sure what state they're in now that I soaked them by taking a detour into a deep puddle on Sunday's half though!! Anyway, I think my next pair will be specialist running shoes!!

    Hello

Blinkin' work getting in the way of forum posting. Not fair...

Anyway, sorry to hear that your back is still painful...I hope that it's not a long recovery.

Shoes...Larraine's right - gotta be comfy.

I'm just running easy/recovery runs this week, ahead of Sunday's 10k in Blackpool.

Ho hum, back to the grindstone.

    XB
  • (((hugs))) Larraine - defo reward yourself with a beach run. I'm lucky enough to live about 30 seconds from a lovely beach although I usually see it from a dog walking point of view rather than running. Having said that I've had some lovely beach runs round the coast - tide permitting (!) which although much harder work are really really enjoyable - and I usually hate running....
