Apologies for absence - a combo of chaos at school etc and this new forum being such a pain in the wotsit..........
Nowt much happening here - just work, dogs, more work, dogs and no real training although I am hoping to kick start the swimming this week.........can't let my team mates down!
Just seem to be permanently off colour - never anything serious but not at my peak............although of course this could just be a combo of old age and life changes!!
    Getting old sucks........
Glad to see most people are getting on ok and getting this sorted, moved, organised etc....not that I would expect any the less of WAISTers........takes a lot to take a WAISTer down

Gosh - I just logged in (although I hadn't actually logged out) and it told me I was promoted to level 3!  :D Most exciting.

First of all ((((((((((((((((((())))))))))))))))))))) a big hug for anyone suffering or not quite so cheerful as they could be. Work sounds busy for some of you, some of you are handling difficult relationships and ageing parents and errant offspring and uncooperative pets.

Nowt much going on here. Still not moved house, but we've been to see about 7 in the last couple of weeks - none *quite* right (well, one was very lovely, if it had have been half price!  >:)

Off to a conference this week (I do love a conference, and I've wangled a hotel so no need for backwardsing and forwardsing every day - will treat it like a holiday, although a holiday in a travelodge in the middle of Manchester sounds like something DL would do :D )

Then I'm having a *real* holiday and, er, cycling across the Trans Pennine Way to visit my sister :D Only about 200 miles I reckon. Easy peasy. I cycled 32 miles the other week, not that much further. Then me and Mr Cheery are vanishing for an actual holiday (as in tea shops and seaside) in Northumbria. Busy busy! :D

No actual running though... Cycling seems to be my thing at the minute, although it's pretty much all for transport!

    Keep well Waisterinos...
  • evening

Daffs - I like the sound of the trans-penine bike ride, though I imagine it could be tough! Tea shops and sea side definitely my kind of thing though :)

Had a busy day on not much sleep, haircut, gas boiler serviced, walked down to podiatrist to get my feet sorted ( a couple of painful corns amongst other things, I should probably go more often) then walked a bit more and met OH when he finished work for a coffee. Lovely wandering about in the sunshine today. I have even managed a little bit of tidying up at home, so maybe the thyroid meds are starting to have an effect!

    Morning

What grand adventures Daffs. I hate conferences - not good at 'networking' and as I used to organise them for a living I'm horribly judgemental and have to keep telling myself to behave.

You too sound like you're quite the gallivant MC. School holidays become you! Hope it is the thyroid sorting itself out too.

Podds - lovely to see you despite the chaos. Was with friends the other night talking about the old American comedy 'The Golden Girls'. We used to think the characters were ancient. Apparently they were supposed to be 55. So, yes, getting old sucks!

I'm off south for a few days, starting with the delights of Swindon. Ever the optimist, I have packed my running kit.

Happy Tuesday - hope it brings some light relief.

OMG - seriously???????????  :#  I seem to remember them as being in their 70s and 80s.......not that I ever watched it but I remember all the trailers..............

  • back home and grass all cut. That just about sums it up for now :)

I'm so glad SM is settling in so well Sluggy - knowing she is safe and comfortable must make your life easier. and once a WAISter always a WAISter :)

well done on your PB Yums - great time and your running seems to be doing rather nicely these days, hope you and the bird have a lovely break

great to see you Westie, sorry to hear about the eye - I hope its mendable

I did the half mara on Sunday - strange kind of race really, it was 4 laps of a park - was a 5k and 10k so numbers dwindled on the last 2 laps. it was surprisingly undulating and I pushed it on the downhills to keep a reasonable pace which has resulted in the return of the poorly knee, but its feeling better today. there was a lady running with 2 dogs off lead - they were fab and only disappeared into the woods once, when they got hot they popped into a lake to cool down. :) was lovely except that I have now been beaten over 13 miles by a Jack Russell :) I managed just under 2 hours, but garmin said it was under 13 miles, I'm taking it though because I think the satellites were dodgy in a few areas!

busy work week - its that time of the month

  •
oh and thanks for asking Yums - Mr FF is struggling  on but not good at all really, having to take strong painkillers to keep mobile. Ned is doing great he's a real sweetie (most of the time) at home and knows a few commands, he's still pretty rubbish on a lead though and is totally overexcited at the sight of other dogs. he's booked in for doggy training in May - dog help us, and it will be me attending with him because the Bigun works nights and Mr FF can't walk :'(

    Hi all,

I tried to post this morning, then lost my internet connection  :(

    Welcome home Westie.

Daffs, I am glad you have some cheery things lined up. Mind you, you have a real gift for turning mundane things into cheery adventures.  :)

Jenni, well done on the half! but I'm sorry your knee is sorely now. Also sorry to hear that Mr FF is having so much trouble with his ankle  :(

Podds, you do push yourself terribly hard. Sometimes it almost seems that you are punishing yourself  :(  Don't forget to stop and smell the roses sometimes!

Today I met a lady from the cat forum. We have talked a lot on-line, and on the phone, but have not met in person before. It went really well and we talked for several hours. You know how dodgy it can be to meet people you have 'met' online  :D

Ive left a note on my own desk and apologise for the absence, its a tad bizzy here just for a change

Sluggy, glad that things are moving in the right direction even if that is SM in a bed going rapidly down the street !

Yums, that is super speedy .. well done you.  My running is not too good at the mo,  You may remember I fell over in the ultra back in october and there seems to be a little pocket of fluid on my knee cap which is causing an imbuggerance somewhat ... I shall gie it a good talking to and see what happens

Hoorah for all those people on school holidays and public servants who have just got a whole 1% pay rise ... I am not sure what I shall spend that on, possibly a mars bar

The FGO still resembles a smelly hat rack but he will be skipping with joy tomorrow as he and his ladies are let in to the green paddocks that have been rested since the end of the summer!  I bet he has been crossing the days off on his calendar.   He is also going to be joined by a new boy who is coming to stay for a temporary period whilst his stable is rebuilt.  It will be interesting to see how they interract as even at the ripe old age of 'nearly dead' he is still top dog in the field !

For those of you on FB you may have seen that I seem to have acquired a couple of ducks ... there has been a lady duck roosting on the wall for the last couple of days and then recently she has brought her better half along to survey the brook as well ... she is so well camouflaged on the wall even the GPO has not noticed her and he was incidentally sat on the bench less than 4 feet away from her !

2 night shifts to go and then I have a nice couple of weeks off, I shall be spending a few days in (sunny) Devon and a few at home doing 'stuff'.  I actually should be out riding my bike ... time is ticking on somewhat !

  • SlugstaSlugsta ✭✭✭
    Evening all,

Hope you have a good break Meldy, the weather has been lovely down here again today - especially over where SM is. How lovely to have acquired some ducks - do you happen to have an orange tree too?  >:) When is your IM this year? Are you worried that your knee will not hold up?

We may have hit a slight snag with the house move. We were rather late in deciding to get a survey done and it has shown up some potential problems with damp. We are getting a specialist to look at it ASAP but it could be a deal breaker. I would be terribly sad to let our buyers down at this late stage - but I don't want to discover I am living in a swimming pool!  :o

    Hope everyone is well.

slugs - oh bad news on the survey, fingers crossed it is nothing too bad and can be fixed easily

JFF - well done on the half, hope your knee is recovering, Sorry to hear Mr FF isn't doing too well :(

I went to my running club's training for the first time in ages yesterday - I am always too late/knackered after work and the last few school holidays I have been too ill. The club seems to have grown massively and I didn't know most people! Did an 'efforts' session and managed to get pbs over 1 mile, 1 km and 5km!! Woohoo. And still managed a slow (very slow) run this morning and a bike ride with my kids this afternoon. For the first time in ages I woke up not feeling knackered, so maybe the thyroid meds are starting to take effect, or it could be the effect of not being at work....or a combination of the two.
  • so now we have officially become the Golden Waisters then ??!

Daffs, the Trans Pennine Way sounds amazing ... any training in hand for this one ??  !    :)

The FGO was very happy to be out in a field of green today, he was not joined by the 'new boy' so was looking after his harem. the new boy Josh will join them tomorrow and by the way the skewbald tart was making eyes at him today I dont think he will be bothering with the others too much!

Just shooting through to be a presence - have spent most of the evening annoying South Eastern Railways whose pet policy cites greyhounds as an example of aggressive dogs...........don't think they realised quite how many greyhound owners there are out there..........  >:) ...............they are already saying on twitter apparently that they will review the wording of their policy  :D
Nobody minds a pet policy or even a muzzle policy if they must but we do object to greyhounds being cited as an aggressive breed with no back up whatsoever (and there wouldn't be as they aren't!!!)
  • I really dont think that greyhounds know the word ...  I would imagine they are thinking of the working hounds rather than the sofa loungers we all know!   ill advised I suspect but at least they have a policy .. many dont

last few hours before  I get two weeks off  :)

    Morning all

Maybe it was a rabbit or cat that wrote about aggressive greyhounds - it's all about perspective!

Hope your damp isn't rising Sluggie. We had a report on our house which allowed us to renegotiate the price and get the issue sorted. Very few properties out there without one issue or another.

(((((Mr FF's foot)))) it's been a while now, he must be really fed up with it.

Golden Girls ran for quite a few years so they did make it into their 60's, but other than Sophia, the older mother they all started as working women in their mid 50's. Eeeeeek!

Made it home after another long work trip. Managed a run around a golf course without getting hit by a ball. I have a day of admin catch up before a week off. I need this break - it feels like it's been a very long time coming!

    Happy nearly the weekend.

    Afternoon,

I completely agree that the houndies we know and love are not aggressive to anything other than small, furry animals! Soft as pop to anything on 2 legs.

DL, I'm glad you made it round the golf course without injury. I often used to start my run by going through the local golf club and always used to pity the players out there in the pouring rain. I mean, who would go out in that weather just to practice their 'sport'?  . . .

It's another lovely day here and it will be even nicer over at the 'head' when we go to see SM. It is quite a way for me to drive, which makes it difficult, but there are advantages to her being over the other side of town!

weather has been generally good here all week (apart from one rainy day) and I have done running, biking with the kids, walking with OH in the evening. Been a bit washed out today so a couple of walks and not much else.

5k swimathon tomorrow, unfortunately haven't managed to get any swims longer than 2k done for about a year, so it might be slow....
  • Greyhound and small furry.............at daggers drawn........
Image may contain people sitting and indoor
  • 2 plus a small furry which chose to go in with the hounds.......
    No automatic alt text available
  • What a beautiful day ....poor old FGO was sweating under his winter coat today!

i had a rather nice trot round the park in the sun, up early tomorrow for the club duathlon which will likely be over before I usually get out of bed!
  • podds - lovely photos

shame to spend this afternoon in a swimming pool, but annual 5k swimathon done!

good luck for the duathlon meldy

    good morning :-)

Podds, they have a policy that says houndies are aggressive ? Dear goodness, talk about ill informed. Whilst my experience of hounds is miniscule in comparison to yours, I've never met a hound who has been anything other than a sweetheart with hooman beans. bird's hounds live with a cat and now she's adopted 8 chicky chicks. Hopefully Dave and Clyde wont bother with them either.

Rising Damp, Sluggy ?I used to watch that with my dad :-)  Fingers crossed you wont need your water wings in your new place but at least you wont have the problem of staying up late to book aqua gym ;-)

Daffy, transpenine cycle of 200 miles ? You really have lost it in the most delightful daffyesque way :-)A Travelodge anywhere is a holibob for me :-) You must keep us posted on your journey. I expect a blog entry each day :-)  I know the feeling about finding the ideal place to live at the right price.

Ah, m...eldy I have such an image in my head of a happy murph gambolling around a sunny field :-)  Yes, when IS your triafferlon ?

oh, Mrs Fastfast. That's a pretty speedy half. I love the idea of the jack Russell cooling off in the lake/river. All half marathons should be made that way :-) Im so sorry to hear that Mr Farfar is still struggling and in pain. Wasn't the plan to have his joint replaced ? Ned sounds as though he's doing fabulously although I'd love to be a fly on the wall at your training class :-)

Westie, I hope they've sorted your eye. Will you need to go back?  That's some video Scott made of his monro run. Stunning and amazing he makes it look so easy.

MC, good to hear that the meds are working. I hope you're enjoying the Easter holidays and recharging your batteries.

DL are you serious about the golden girls being  fifty somethings ? Gee, I only remember them being old as in post retirement. Maybe that's why I have a problem as retirement age has moved  somewhat since I was first introduced to the golden girls. I hope you are enjoying some down time too. Sounds as though you need it as it'snot like you to say you need time off.

Had a fairly nice time away with bird. I think we both agreed we get on each others nerves. Popped along to the local park run park today for a picnic with bird and also checked out the nearly ready installation of the poppy wave (from the tower wave of poppies). Tomorrow I will be running part of the Roach valley relay route with my run buddies. Its off road and very pretty by all accounts. Only 4.2 miles. I'm angling after one of my buddies running back with me rather than getting  lift. Then I'm taking Ma out for a cuppa and cake at the local wildlife  centre

  • Morning all,
feeling a little under the weather this morning which may have been the box of wine and
    a bbq in the sunshine.
I see the second consultant in 8 days time about my eye then I may find out if they are going to do anything . I do know that the longer it is left the chances of some repair being successfull reduces over time anyway we will see.
Scott and Tony were over to see us yesterday hence much beer and wine and Scott stayed over and did a run over our local hills. He has updated his blog with the Gairloch write up done so here is the link if anyone would like a read plus other routes and ideas .
    http://runningwildinscotland.blogspot.co.uk/

It has been a while since I attempted any sort of jogging and even my walking the hills is not as frequent as it used to be , think mojo has gone with age .

  • Your mojo may have gone Westie but at least you have memories

Yums, how refreshing to admit you bet on each other's nerves!

the duathlon was fine, I only had to do 12 miles on the bike, I hate doing short bits  :)

it it was a beautiful day yesterday, today however felt distinctly chilly, or may be seasonal?!

off to Devon tomorrow so I will pop in when I can ...failing that I will be back on Saturday

    try and behave  :)
  • Oh ... Anyone seen Daffs or is she still missing, last seen on a bike??!
  • morning all

please excuse my absence - work has been manic

Slugs I hope the damp isn't a deal breaker on the flat- as DL says it may be a chance for renegotiation

glad you're feeling more human now MC, hopefully he meds are having a good effect now

oh Yums that made me smile - "we both agreed we got on each other's nerves" :) at least you can be honest!

yes Mr FF is waiting date for an op an his ankle - not a replacement though, it will be rebuilding the ankle to keep him going for a few years then eventually it will be fixed (as in a fixed position) but seems like a long old wait

I managed a nice slow 20 miles on Saturday so planning to enter Stratford marathon, my knee is feeling OK now but I can still feel fluid there which is odd - any thoughts medical peeps?

  • Dr DaffsDr Daffs ✭✭✭
Ooh, 20miles is impressive Far Far! fingers crossed you can sort it out x

Fingers crossed for your house too Sluggy! don't want to get wet feet!

I'm still here  had an excellent time but didn't feel remotely inclined to cycle home again :hushed: First day I got madly sunburned, and going over the moors was like some kind of ludicrous off road adventure race, cycling over what was basically scree, past giant mythical grey furry boulder cow beasts (what the hell were they?!) Terrifying and took forever, had to bail after 36 miles with 16 still to go as wanted to get to friend's house before they all went to bed.

Day 2 was MUCH flatter (mostly pancake flat which, it turns out, I find quite dull - there's no pleasing some folk!) popped into a friend's in Liverpoolintent on getting the train the rest of the way but stopped being a wimp (and wasn't in a rush) so cycled another 7 miles to ferry, and another 10 after that along the coast to sister's.

Obviously I had a headwind for both full days, ludicrously so over the moors and along the coast. bloody ridiculous. Covered in bruises from bashing into bike and gate posts. had to get off every ten mins to push over rocks/through sand/round stupid gates to stop motorbikes/take pictures/ eat picnic/put more clothes on/take various clothes off. I'll never make a cycle racer :D

Very glad my bike folded in half at various points - numerous chicane gates I would have really struggled with without unloading panniers, but because bike bends in the middle (if you unclip it, not just all the time!) i could basically just bend it round the gate. also useful in lift in station at Liverpool this morning where bike wouldn't have fit at all without bending. ludicrous!

Had 3 days of being woken at 6.30am and am now ensconced in a B&B about 23 miles from my own house... hoping for a decent kip... fingers crossed,I'm SO BLOODY TIRED!!
