Mortons Neuroma

HI all and Happy New Year

Ive been struggling with a sharp stabbing pain at the base of my middle toes and suffer numbness at the tip of one of those toes, I believe it could be mortons neuroma.

It is kind of ok for a few miles of running maybe up to 5 but after it gets increasingly painful and I struggle to carry on, wearing narrow shoes also makes the problem appear.

Anybody help me with what I can do to solve this issue??

Many Thanks guys and girls.

  • Hi Andy, this something I have suffered with (and coped with) for quite some time. I have tried a few things. You must wear shoes that have a decent size toe box giving as much room for your toes as possible. You can buy pads that you can stick to the sole of your  shoe, I have done this to good effect thanks to the NHS.

You can get custom made inserts from your doctor if necessary. I had the good fortune to see an NHS physio who used to work in the Army and she gave me some pads to work with. They helped me a lot. I now run without them as the inflamed nerve is no longer quite so inflamed and I only ever get a mild discomfort from it now and the occasional numbness in my toes (not during running image).

If it's serious you can have injections or even surgery,  although removal of the nerve can result in permanent numbness in your toes and that area.

I would seriously recommend seeing a good physio (one who knows runners preferably as I got lucky with mine).

Oh....And Happy New Year to you too image

  • Thanks Very Much for the info, at least I know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I don't mind the numbness it's the pain I can't deal with, I'm just keeping my running to around the 4-5 miles until I get help! Cheers and happy Runnin get!!
  • I had MN for years but never knew what caused the pain. I did a lot of walking and was always in pain after 3 miles. I tried loads of different boots, cheap, expensive, but nothing worked. I thought it was just me who had a 'bad' foot.

I finally had enough and Googled it. Went to my GP who sent me to the hospital and after 6 weeks had the surgery.

They went in from the top of my foot and removed it. I was put under but they let me leave the same day after a few hours of recovery. I wore the angled boot for a week to keep my weight off the front of my foot and just took simple pain killers as the diclofenic I was prescribed gave me an upset stomach. After 10 days or so the stitches came out and I was back to normal after about 3 weeks. This was about 7 years ago now and have never looked back. The permanent numb toes are a small price to pay for pain free walking and now that I run I am so glad I had the op!!

  • Sean thanks so much for the info, my third toe from my little toe on left foot is already numb though!!
  • No worries. Go see your GP and I hope you get it sorted.

I don't suffer burning under my foot when running, but i do when in ski boots. I thought it could be a morons neuroma... but turned out to be down to tight calf muscles and nerves. Footbeds and ski boot modifications sorted it out.

Go and see a physio specialising in gait analysis and running as well as your GP. It could be a biomechanical problem especially if it only occurs when running.
