Have started swimming in public lanes session at 7:30 (with grannies and grandads) and it has to be said most of them swim quite well, onen or two swimm VERY well and only a couple are whatever the swimming equivalent of a plodder is!.
However, I have 2 problems
1. is this Swiss Ball of a woman who insists on using the fast lane when she isn't (fast that is). OK she can swim but she is soooooooooooo huuuuuuuuuge that she has no shoulder flexibility and as such she fills the lane. I have to "duck" every time we cross - and as for passing....... I don't think so. (She is good about stopping to let me through though).
This brings me to my next problem.
Getting stared at! Does anyone else get looked at as though they have just landed from outer space - just 'cos they a) seem to be doing weird stuff (sets etc) and b) going a bit quick and getting out of breath?
Petal - imagine the looks I get when I swim in public sessions with my little waterproof book of pre-written swim sessions opened up and propped up on a kickboard?! Hee hee!!!
i do get funny looks at the end of my session pushing a little raft ahead of me... kick board with pull buoy, water bottle & laminated session sheet on top
they are kind of minimal in the sessions i do.. just a bit of warm up. no one's nicked or borrowed them yet as i leave them in an obvious pile with the bottle & sheet.
although sometimes i use the pull buoy as a counter.. moving it back and forth a tile at a time. so someone could really screw me up by moving it back one occasionally!
Comments
doesnt bode too well for the summer season at tooting lido!
now andy PLEASE can I have my towel back
I know i have learned my lesson, although its not like I was the only one with my towel.
It is such a long way back to the lockers!
Oh well, it was a towel I had 'borrowed' from a hotel anyway so it is probably divine justice
JLK
dont worry I have a second set of ear plugs that I use to prevent any intruders
i always drip all over the changing room to get mine out of the locker.
the life guard was very helpful though; he told be to stand underneath the hand dryer
at which point i almost decked him, but I would have broken my arm bands!

(Has to be oversized as can't wear my readers under me goggles 8-(( )
I have to either remeber mine or write them on the back of my hand in waterproof ink
)

Someone "borrowed" mine and left it at the end of the next lane.
saying that i have not swam since November and it still may be a week or 2 before im healed enough to get back in the pool

Any hints and tips for one with an addled brain
Petal, yes people use my floats...kind of annoying but maybe they just don't notice.
Another session tip is to just write it in biro on paper and wet it then "stick" it to your drinks bottle...works well enough to last.
Counting...hm well I just do...most I swim I guess is a 400 though which is only 16 lengths of a 25m pool...I manage not to lose count.
You can buy a little "ring" which you press with your thumbs which counts for you!!
i'm ok until lap 7, then i have a mental block that goes (a bit like an old computer subroutine):
10 wonder is this lap 7 or 8?
20 assume 7
30 swim lap
40 goto 10
<a>http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/pages/moreinfoa.asp?pe=BAFAGGFQ_BB+Swim+Lap+Counter&cid=880
Bit pricey but does other stuff too (fastest, slowest, avg lap etc.)
Cheers
