There's a glimpse of me on the photos on the marathon website. It's the one with the bear in the left of the picture with his paw in the air. I'm the bald one in the red Serpie vest. Two seconds later I had a soppy grin on my face and was high fiving the bear - the only time I came out of "the zone" the whole race. Bears. Just can't resist 'em.
Nick, or anyone?!What sort of mileage do you reckon I'll have to stretch to in order to go sub 3.15 for London? How far in advance did you start putting more miles in etc to get those kind of times? I really want to go for it now and know I've got to be prepared to work for it...thanks.
Rowtheboat. Don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to get from 3:30 to 3:15 by the time London comes round. It shouldn’t involve too much more work and you really don’t need to change your lifestyle that much. My advice would be to get yourself a copy of Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas. I know the ‘Advanced’ bit sounds a bit pretentious, but it’s such a great book I would recommend it to anyone thinking of doing a marathon. I’ve only had it a couple of months and have seen a real improvement. Any book that suggests a couple of beers the night before a marathon is OK with me!! Their training schedule with the least mileage peaks at 55 miles pw, which would be ideal for you. It may sound a lot but don’t forget that it peaks at that mileage so you will only do it for a couple of weeks. It starts at just over 30 miles and gradually builds up, so judging by your current mileage you should be ready to tackle it straight away.
As for when to start specifically training for London…. I trained solidly from London to Berlin, which I found a bit of a slog by the end. They suggest that 18 weeks is long enough (although they do supply longer and shorted schedules), so personally I won’t start until early December. Maybe give yourself a few other minor races to concentrate on in the mean time.
Thanks for that Nick, that sounds pretty sensible really and I had planned already to plod along without a plan at least for a few weeks...think you do need a break to maintain enthususiasm. I'll get a copy of that book and you've got me all keen again thinking I can do it by the time London comes around...55 over a few weeks would be a small price to pay in perspective! I've got the GRIM run in Dec so I won't feel anything for a month after that anyway as my legs will be defrosting!! I reckon that'll be a good point for me to start getting properly focused again. Thanks once again. Who else is doing London?
Hi RTB, I hope to be doing London next year - sent off my Berlin certificate for a good for age entry so fingers crossed! Hubby will go in the ballot and hope he gets in again.
I have applied for London too, my first time. Has anyone any experience of getting rejected for London and so signing up for Paris? I just wondered if Paris places are generally still available by the time the London places are confirmed (dec?). Nick
good luck row the boat!you can and will do that 3.15!go go go!good luck in the Grim!brave girl, respect!i couldnt do it.what running if any have the berlin folks been doing?i went down with the customary post mara lurgy, but intended to have a week or two off to recharge the batteries and ease back slowly for a month or so.Really had a bad time at London so thats off the radar,Madrid is the week after so can train with chums doing London anyway.
I applied to London year befoe last and didn't get in which is why I did Paris twice (couldn't be bothered with the hassle of the ballot after realising how easy it was to sign up for Paris hence waiting for GFA entry). I found there were still places quite late on so you should be fine using it as a backup plan if you don't get in London & I 100% recommend the event. KC - fingers crossed your hubby gets a place else you'll have to make him take you to Paris for the weekend before London whilst he does that and you cruise down the seine! Chris, it's only the first bit of water that hurts in the GRIM run - after that you really don't feel anything else!!!!
I got my usual post marathon cold too. Did nothing until friday and since then have just been easing my way back in with some easy miles. Feel pretty good now.
What a great choice, Paris or London!!
Has anyone that sent off their Good for your age stuff heard anything back yet? I sent mine off last Wednesday, phoned them yesterday and they told me that they haven't got it yet!
Hello Nick ,I sent my good for age request off last tues and got the reply on Sat with the respective form to complete so don't know what has happened to yours
Cheers RTB, hope hubby gets in too otherwise may defer my place and do Paris next year year and London in 2006. Just about to enter the Hastngs half again which is always good. Has anyone had a go at the Berlin race re-run dot thingy (no idea what technical term is!), it's fab, we can see that he and and I ran together for first 5km then off he goes, never to be seen again until the free beer...
