OK, so my last question turned out to be a bit stoopid. Lets draw a veil over that.
In trying to find the (obvious) answer via Google, I discovered that amongst the people selling their London Marathon medals on eBay, there are people selling their timing chips. Not only that, but one even has a bidder.
Now I can see how someone might lose their medal in the pub on Sunday night and how others may want to make a few more quid for their charity by passing theirs on.
But who wants a timing chip! Is it just memorabilia gone mad? I've still got mine on my shoe. When I can look at them again without wincing I'll be chucking the chip away. Maybe I should have it mounted instead.

.. may be thats what people want them for .. ?
Well there are uses. Makes a lovely necklace, earring, something to put on a Christmas tree, a wedding gift. Its a must-have item.
M..Eldy: Yeah, but it's a bit much, isn't it? What next - individually displayed safety pins?
I drew the line at the chip, but my finisher's t-shirt is currently worth at least £31.
Maybe if you are a 'one and done' kind, you've got the number and the shirt and medal and various of bits of paraphernalia there are companies that will frame the whole lot ....then you realise you binned the chip
i can see a small market for them
I was inspired by this thread to put my timing chips on ebay. No bids yet, but one watcher. I'll keep you posted.
It must be for one of those frame everything from the day memrobilia things.....
strangely For some races like Comrades you have to buy your own personal chip to use and you have to bring it to registration
I have put mine in a job lot with last year's commemorative 'hand in hand' chip. I reckon I'll get a fiver for both, if I'm lucky.
I've got two and I fully intend to sell them both. If anyone buys them!
Are you still bragging about having two chips lit I am going to wear this years one as well as the one next year just so i look special and it may even speed me up!!
Shedboy are you going to put this year's number on your back too?
No im going to sell that to that Welsh running club
...£43... damn, this is exciting stuff!
wow - how much are the medals going for? not that i sell mine as i have so few!!!
The medal's only up to £31 but I've seen them going for £80/90 recently so I'm hoping for a late flurry of strategic bidding by tomorrow lunchtime.
My medal's only on £12.50 but the auction doesn't end for two days, so all the disappointed bidders on Phil's can come and snap mine up afterwards.
Can i buy your time Lit?
i will bid you for it Shedboy
ooohh a bidding war ....
Ive just had a look on ebay, some shirts are going for £76..I've got 3 edinburgh shirts, wonder what they will sell for...
Ooooh, finally a bid on the timing chips, at £4.99. Medal now up to £21. Pretty much covered the cost of my post-race booze already.
Lightweight
