  • I have managed 3 in the last week.

    Afternoon all,

HS - great to hear you've managed to get your leak sorted - very handy that one of your running club is a plumber. I have memories of having to replace a ballcock in the past as well as the washer in one of those inlet valves. But I suspect too much has changed to allow Mr Average to be able to do much diy himself these days. I've not used Zoom yet apart from having a meeting with myself :) To explain - I had Zoom running on my laptop and my phone at the same time so I could see what the screen and the controls look like. My local U3A committee had a 'zoom' meeting last week and the Chairman tells me it was very easy to use. Margaret went shopping again this morning in the 'oldies' hour and said everything was available apart from the Tesco Finest dark chocolate & ginger cookies we enjoy - I expect we'll survive :)

Aquarius - can't imagine how warm your postie must have got with all that gear on. He's right though about being a front-line worker and with handing all the letters, he's in a job where you could potentially be dealing with the virus passed on by lots of strangers.

Molly - glad you've caught up with your work backlog after the power-cut. Also glad to hear you've been able to get outside into your yard - though I did laugh when I saw how your dogs gave you some 'help'. I'm sure if you spoke 'doggy' they'd explain they were warming up the soil! :) I see the power-cut was due to a vehicle crashing into a supply pole - reminded me of when our cable tv went off at my old house and that was due to someone losing control on a bend and wiping out the distribution cabinet for the whole estate.

I've been gardening again today. Did some work this morning (cutting back ivy; tying up blackberries) and a bit more this afternoon (weeding borders). I just got Margaret to 'tour the estate' with me to point out what is and isn't weeds (the ones I removed earlier were the obvious weeds - I needed help identifying the more subtle stuff I wasn't sure about). And while we walked around I noticed several dandelions that I missed yesterday.

I'm planning to do a 5ml treadmill run in the morning (the #notpub2pub run) while my clubmates are doing the same thing elsewhere.
  • Good evening all,

Aquarius, I do agree that the posties should be issued with some sort of protective clothing. I think most of them are wearing gloves. I had several letters through my letter box this morning, so immediately washed my hands after opening them. I believe the virus can exist for several hours or more on cardboard, so presume the same applies to paper.

I was very lucky that Andy, the plumber, is a member of the running club and that I have known him for several years. He is one of the Coaches. He had to make a special journey to Winchester to pick up the replacement ball cock. I doubt whether any  other plumber would have put themselves out like that. He did warn me that the drive would add to the costs, but I said that it was worth it to get the job done and a weight off my mind.

Thanks, I did enjoy today's run, see below.

Damien, well done with your 10k running, your pace must be improving with the regular training runs!

Molly,  I'm glad to hear that your electricity came back on yesterday morning. An unfortunate cause of the loss being an inebriated driver crashing into a pole bringing it down with all the wires etc. Hope nobody was hurt in the accident.

I'm glad that you like the photos. Where I live now is like a different world from when I lived in Liverpool for about 8.5 years. Thanks for your comment on my training. Hard work does pay off and is necessary to achieve improvements.

Thanks for the lovely pictures of your dogs. They certainly don't think of the beds in the same way that they are intended!

Well done for yesterdays 5 miles on the treadmill and I hope today's bike ride was good. Enjoy your easy day tomorrow.

Aquarius again, well done for your very early morning run, presumably before breakfast? Good to hear that your knee "behaved," as downhill running is usually where these niggles show up.

Shame about Steve's hair clippers, what a disappointment that the 12mm heads he wanted weren't included. Good luck with the scissors!

I ran 7.6 miles this morning, which was 2 miles on road, 3.5 miles in the forest, and back on road. I was running really strongly, so when I was back on the road, I upped the pace as I had done previously, but felt a twinge in the front of my right knee cap, so eased back, especially as there was a steep downhill section.

Can't believe that we are coming into Easter, Friday being Good Friday and Sunday, Easter Sunday. This will be a big test of whether everyone obeys the governments directive to stay at home except for the essentials which they have been drilling into us for weeks. If these rules are flouted, it will probably lead to the Government having to prohibit going out for exercise such as running and dog walking.
  • I have been getting about 5.25 per km pace.

    Afternoon all,

HS - glad to see you are taking the same precautions as me and washing your hands immediately after opening the post. You just don't know how many hands it has been through and can't be too careful. Your friend/plumber Andy was good to help you out like he did.
Aquarius - our posts crossed so I didn't see yours yesterday. Glad to hear there weren't too many people around when you ran early and that your knee wasn't complaining too much afterwards. Bit of a b****r about the wrong heads being supplied with the clippers you ordered. Good luck with the scissors - I've warned Margaret I might be needing her to give me a trim in a week or so.
I have a #4 cut at the hairdressers and after six weeks it's only just beginning to feel a bit long. After seeing Aquarius's post I thought I should educate myself as the numbers have always confused me a bit. Turns out 'most' clipper heads work in 1/8" increments. So a #4 cut like mine is half an inch long - which equates to the 12mm that Steve wanted. According to what I read, a 6mm head would be a #2 and end up a quarter of an inch long - too short, even for me!
Did my #notpub2pub run this morning - 5mls on the treadmill and I increased the speed gradually each mile from 5.6 to 6 mph so by the last mile I was doing the equivalent of 10mm pace. I needed a breather afterwards!
My right shoulder is a bit sore this morning after the last few days gardening and car-washing. Just about to jump in the shower and afterwards, I'm going to do the exercises the physio gave me when I had similar problems a month or two ago. Then I think I'll just be shuffling paper for the rest of the day :)

  • Good afternoon everyone,

WtnMel, I don't have haircuts that are grades. Toni, my hairdresser uses a comb and scissors, and a shaver on neck. She also trims my eyebrows and hair in the ears.

You seem to be getting on well with your treadmill, so hope you can transfer the same pace, or better onto the roads.

Hope the exercises your physio gave you, help with your sore right shoulder.

Just ran an easy pace 4.6 miles on roads this morning. I'm really pleased that my easy pace is now the same or better than "when I was trying" a few months ago. I'm having a rest day tomorrow and will join the queue at the supermarket early tomorrow morning with the other OAP's.

A bit of bad news, Paula Radcliffes father died in Salisbury District Hospital in the Radnor Ward, which is the Intensive Care Unit, yesterday.
  • Good afternoon everyone,

A lovely day for not going away from home.

Went shopping bright and early this morning and there were only 3 people ahead of me in the queue. They were obviously expecting a very busy day as one of the staff was placing cones at 2 metre intervals along the pavement outside and back into an oval shape. They are only letting in one shopper at a time, so that there is no hassle. I got all I needed and probably won't need to shop again until Tuesday. Shops are closed all day Easter Sunday.

I didn't run today so hopefully will run tomorrow. I probably won't do the 5k challenge, as it might not do the knee any good. An easy pace longer run might be preferable. I'll see how it is in the morning.

Take care everyone and stay safe.

    Afternoon everyone,

HS - I'm obviously hopeful this faster-paced treadmill running will translate into quicker running when I venture back out onto the pavements around here. My running club have organised a 'virtual' 5k relay race but I've steered clear of that myself. The shoulder isn't as bad today (the rest from gardening yesterday obviously helped). Glad to hear your 'easy' pace is now better than before. I heard the news about Paula Radcliffe's dad dying. Good news that there wasn't a big queue when you went shopping.

I've not done a lot at all today. A bit of paper-shuffling and a 75min Skype call with my friend Alan this morning - and this afternoon I've been checking out the pressure washer that has been languishing unused in the garage for the last few years. I've managed to find the necessary 'bits' to allow me to connect it to the outside tap so I may have a go with it tomorrow (never used it so that should be 'interesting').

    Good afternoon all,

WtnMel: Thanks for the helpful information that the 12mm clipper head would result in a half inch cut, I’d no idea how long (or rather short) Steve’s hair would end up being. As I’ve explained below, I’m still hopeful that we’ll get the 12mm head. Like HS, Steve’s barber uses a comb and scissors, and the result is a little longer than half an inch usually.
It sounds like you had a very productive notpub2pub 5ml run yesterday, well done on managing 10 minute miling for your last mile. Did Margaret provide the 2 for 1 hot drinks afterwards?
Oh dear, sorry to hear that your shoulder is sore again, I hope you’ve caught it in time and that the physio’s exercises will put it right. (As I was posting this I saw your latest post. I'm glad your shoulder is getting better. Beware of the pressure washer, they can take on a life of their own)

HS: I hope your knee twinge was just temporary and you aren’t having any problems with it today. I think you have more than had your fair share of knee trouble! As I’m typing this I see that you have just posted today to say you are contemplating a longer slower run tomorrow depending on how your knee feels. I think that is wise, and hopefully when you get up tomorrow you’ll find your knee feels fine. Keeping fingers crossed for you x
I have to say I think you’ve been very lucky with the queues at your local supermarket. The ones I’ve heard about have long queues forming long before they are due to open, but having said that they are very big stores. I don’t know how big your supermarket is, but maybe the smaller ones are better.
Sad news about Paula's father, I believe he was quite an influence on her early career.

Molly: I think our last posts crossed. I’m very impressed with the work you’ve been doing in your garden, so are your dogs by the look of it. What are you planning to put in your raised beds?
That must have been quite a spectacular accident to have snapped the pole and brought it and the wires etc down, I hope no-one was hurt.
When you say you’re planning on sitting on the bike this morning, is that all you intend to do? It might be more beneficial if you pedal as well. ;)

Damien: Three 10ks in a week, well done for showing such commitment. As HS says you’ll be reaping the rewards of these regular runs in pace improvement.

Runningfox: if you are reading this then thank you for another lovely blog post. The photos you take are really special, they convey the feeling of actually being there, and make you wish you really were. Wherever you are, you always capture the mood of the place so well in your words and pictures. I hope you and your partner are both still keeping well and that your partner’s hip bursa is improving so you can both get out occasionally for runs.

I contacted the company I bought Steve’s hair clippers from and they’ve promised to send me the missing 12mm length comb attachment. As it’s coming from China there may be a bit of a delay.
Some not so good news - Steve’s post ablation check up appointment, which was scheduled for next week, has been cancelled. Steve was originally supposed to see a specialist nurse 3 months after his ablation, and was given an appointment for the beginning of March, but this appointment was subsequently cancelled because the nurse had annual leave booked. The appointment was rescheduled for 14th April, but as time got on we expected this rearranged appointment might also be cancelled, but this time due to the coronavirus situation, so when no cancellation letter was received we decided we’d better ring up and check it was still on. When we rang the hospital they had no record of next week’s appointment, because, amazingly enough the nurse had leave booked again for next week. Good job we rang first and didn’t just turn up at the hospital. As it happens they aren’t doing face to face appointments just now, but Steve managed to speak to the nurse as he was finishing his shift. As Steve thinks he still has some unexplained symptoms the nurse said he would need to be fitted with a heart monitor to check what was happening, but there was a waiting list so it could take some months, and even then there was no guarantee that anyone would still be working in cardiology then who could look at the results. One good thing though, the nurse said it would be ok to start exercising again, but obviously building it up slowly. As it is over two years since Steve did any regular exercise I’ve printed off details of the couch to 5k, as he will have to start again from scratch.
This morning I did some interval training. I’d slept badly last night for some reason, so nearly didn’t bother getting up early to run, but in the end I made the effort and did 5 sets of 300m reps, walking back to the start each time. My slowest rep was 1.47 (average pace 9.09 min miling) and the quickest was 1.37 (8.19 min miling). I’d been hoping to average 8.00 min miling so I’ve still got quite a bit of work to do. I really do need to include interval work in my training more often. After the 5th rep the dog walkers started turning up, so I had a short cool down jog and went home. No issues with my knee fortunately, I think the discomfort and stiffness is slowly getting better. I’m sticking with the scraping and icing system my physio recommended and I’m also doing the exercises she gave me. In addition a personal trainer/coach I know has been posting a variety of body strength exercises online to build into a circuit training routine, so I’ve been doing those for the last week or so and they seem to be helping too.

Have a good Easter weekend everyone.

  • Good Evening Everyone,

Damien Nagle, I'm sorry, our posts seem to have crossed. Great job on your 10k pace. You are a speed demon  When the Parkruns start up again, you are going to have a great time.

Aquarius, Great job on your intervals. I am so glad that your knee seems to be holding up. I think that the undulating hill run was probably a good test.

I am sure that you will hit your 8 mm pace goal in the near future. And, that will translate to some very good run times.

How frustrating to have Steve's cardio appointment cancelled. And, even more frustrating to not to be able to get a heart monitor for a few months. But, you did get on the list? Is that correct? If Steve thinks that things still aren't right with his heart, the heart monitor is definitely worth pushing for.  At one point, Brian got really frustrated that he couldn't get anyone to listen to him after, the first ablation, when he felt that things weren't right. So, he got something called a Whoop to monitor the heart rate and collected documentation to thrust at the doctors and nurses.  This was enough to get him the heart monitor, which revealed the need for the second ablation. It's worth being as pushy as possible.

You were very clever to print out the couch to 5k plan for Steve. That sounds like an excellent way for him to ease back into exercising. My fingers are crossed that he will be back out running with you in the near future.

Sadly, Brian's doctor appointment was cancelled, as well.  Like Steve, he's starting to move around more. But, in Brian's case, I'm restricting him to long walks with a heart monitor.  And, I've set his Garmin to alert if his heart rate goes above a certain number that the doctor gave us.  It's really clear that another ablation procedure is not a viable option. And, with his ankles still swelling, I just don't want to take any chances.

Ha! If I thought that I could possibly get away with it, I would probably skip the pedaling

I maintain a dye garden during the summer. So, I grow indigo, weld, and some other assorted flowers that can be used for dyes.  In fact, last weekend I planted a whole bunch of indigo seeds in starter pots.  This year I am adding woad and madder, which is why I was stripping out those beds. Theoretically, the madder seedlings are supposed to arrive today, but our post is a mess. So, who knows.

WtnMel, Great job on your 5 mile treadmill run. It's wonderful to think of all of your running club, on your separate treadmills, running at the same time

In my own case, I've found that to translate an increased treadmill pace to the outdoors, I have to keep the treadmill at a minimum of a 1% incline at all times. I'll be interested to see how it goes when you are able to run outside again.

This weekend we are officially starting our spring yard cleanup!  So, I will probably be commiserating with your sore shoulder.  I do hope that it is feeling better soon.

HS, Oh no, your knee! I am glad that you slowed down when you felt the twinge. Do you still feel discomfort? I am glad that you are sticking to easy runs at the moment, and skipping the 5k challenge. Much better to be safe than sorry.

How wonderful to hear that your old hard pace is now your easy pace  That must give you a great feeling of accomplishment.

I am really hoping that everybody manages to respect the social distancing boundaries for Easter.  I would hate to hear that you couldn't run in the forest.

I am under the impression that Liverpool is a large urban area.  Do you miss city life?

Due to my current volume of work, I never made it on the treadmill, yesterday. Instead, I switched rest days with today, and did a quick and easy 3 miles on the treadmill this morning.  I'm going through one of those periods when my legs feel constantly heavy and fatigued, which is annoying.  But, I know from experience that the feeling will eventually pass. I plan on cross training tomorrow and running six miles on Sunday. The weather is becoming much nicer over here and the trees are beginning to show their leaves.  I suspect that my legs are in a bit of a snit about having to run indoors.

    Happy Easter!

  • Aquarius: Thankyou for your kind words.  I read most of the posts on here but you must excuse this old codger for not participating in the Forum very much.   Since I stopped racing I don't feel I've very much to write about.  I'm not blogging as much now either.
I'm struggling a little at the moment but making the best of it.  My wonderful partner lives fifty miles away so I don't know when I'll see her again other than on Messenger, or when we'll run together again.  Her hip has improved so she gets out for a run most days and phones me about all she's seen and heard, sometimes mid run!
Being classed as vulnerable I'm supposed to self isolate for three months (!) but I try to get out every other day in the early morning.  I also exercise at home but am ashamed to say I can no longer touch my toes.  Well, not without bending my knees.
We should be in Menorca early next month to celebrate my 88th.  We were booked in at the same resort, same hotel, same room and were hoping to go for the same six mile run to the same beach on my birthday.  But that's all gone by the board, looks like we'll be celebrating alone.
From what I read it sounds as though you're all making the best of a bad situation.  Take care and stay safe.

    Afternoon everyone,

Aquarius - yes, I was very pleased to manage 10mm pace without too much trouble. I'm in charge of making the cafetiere of coffee so I made it just before we had our Skype call. The shoulder seems fine again now btw - I'll report back on how it is after the pressure washing session. I think you're right about there probably being a bit of a delay getting the correct attachment for the clippers - just tell Steve he'll have to have a buzz cut instead. Sorry to hear about the various bits of news re Steve's ablation check-up - sounds like a good idea for him to do some gentle exercise re the Couch to 5k programme. Well done re that interval training - I've been thinking I ought to use one of my treadmill sessions to do the same (so make my 3 sessions long, hill & interval) Good that your knee didn't give you any problems and that those body strength exercises seem to be helping too.

Molly - I saw Aquarius's question about what you'll grow in your raised beds and before I saw your answer (and based on recent photos) I was going to suggest you try dog roses :) Interested to hear it will be dye-related plants though - is that something you do yourself or do you supply someone else with them for their purposes? I think some clubmates are on treadmills - but the majority are still running outside. Continuing my de-clutter in the study I've been sorting through an old folder full of bits useful information - I found a treadmill chart which gives equivalent pace measurements for different speeds/inclines.

RF - have to confess I've not read your blog myself for a few weeks but I know Aquarius is a regular visitor. You and your partner are like Margaret and I used to be - LAT-ties (living apart together) but there was only ten miles between our houses at the time. At least you have various tools available (Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp) to allow you to chat and see each other. Such a shame though your Menorca holiday had to be cancelled as has happened to so many people.

I've been waiting for a bit before I start trying to use the pressure washer as I've no idea how noisy it will be - didn't want to upset anyone earlier this morning who was having a lie-in or hoping for a 'peaceful' Saturday morning. But someone nearby has just started up their lawnmower so I think it will be okay now! :)

Hoping to run tomorrow morning - there's been a constant stream of walkers/runners/cyclists on the road outside our house but I'm still not tempted to join them and will stay on the treadmill for the time being. But with it being warm I think I'll open the up-and-over door to get some draught in there - and make it less gloomy.
  • Good afternoon everyone,

WtnMel, I'm fairly confident that your treadmill pace will transfer to the roads and probably quicker. Was your decision not to do the virtual 5k relay, in case you pushed yourself too hard, and perhaps pulled a muscle etc?

Glad to hear that your shoulder wasn't feeling as bad yesterday.

Be cautious with the pressure washer, they are very powerful. Our running club President went to one of those car wash places where they use these, and they broke the sills on his car.

Hope it's not too hot for you tomorrow if you run on the treadmill again.

Aquarius, thanks, my knee was ok today and I did do the 5k challenge again. Details at the end of my post.

I've been shopping mainly at Waitrose, which isn't one of the biggest of their supermarkets, but the early one hour for oap's and people with disabilities is rigidly applied, so numbers queuing are fewer than later in the day. I ran past Tesco on my way back from this mornings run at about 9.30 and the queues  were stretching back round the car park.

That is bad news that Steve's ablation appointment has been cancelled, and dreadful that they hadn't informed him accordingly. I'm surprised his nurse has been allowed to take all this annual leave in the current circumstances. Sarah F, who is a midwife has been working flat out and has been unable to run all week. It's dreadful that Steve is unable to be fitted with a heart rate monitor for some months, and that there might not be anyone available to examine the results. Good though that he is able to undertake training again, albeit it slowly.

Well done for your interval training. I imagine it won't be long before you can maintain an average of 8 minute miling. Good that your knee didn't cause any problems. The circuit training certainly does seem to be helping.

Molly, sorry to hear that Brian's Doctor's appointment has been cancelled. It's good that you are restricting him to long walks with his heart monitor.

Good luck with your spring yard clean up. That sounds like hard work and will certain be classed as cross training.

My knee felt ok this morning, so despite what I said previously, I did do the 5k challenge again this morning. Details at the end of my posts. It really feels good to find my pace improving.

Liverpool is a large city, and of course is the home of the Beatles. I never saw them perform in The Cavern, but did see it before it was demolished. For a time the area was flattened and became a car park, but in recent years Mathew Street has had a new Beatles complex built with a reconstruction of the Cavern as close as possible to the original. I was lucky to see the original whilst it was being demolished. A workman showed me and a friend round the ruins. It's 34 years since I left Liverpool, but I still have fond, clear memories. I don't really miss big city life now that I am so much older, and am enjoying a quieter and slower way of life.

I hope your cross training went well today, and hope you enjoy your 6 miles tomorrow.

Ruuningfox, sorry to hear that you are unable to see your partner at present, but good that you are keeping in touch by Messenger.

I tried to touch my toes this morning, and found that I couldn't. I hadn't tried for quite a while I'll have to work at it.

I hadn't intended to do the 5k challenge this morning, so I started off up the hill which led to an entrance to the forest. I was feeling ok, so decided to rise to the challenge and changed into racing mode. I was very pleased to run it in 28.11, which would have been quicker if the first mile hadn't been uphill. My breakdown was 10.12, 8.44, 8.26 and the last 0.1 7.56 minute miling. My WAVA was 66.12%

    Good afternoon all,

Runningfox: I think we’re all struggling a bit right now. This is a worrying time we’re living in, and particularly difficult if you are living on your own and having to self isolate for three months, but I hope you’ll be able to get out for your runs whenever you can. It must be very hard on both you and your partner not to see each other at the moment, (I hadn’t realised she lived so far away) and really disappointing for you both to miss out on your planned birthday trip to Menorca. It’s plain to see from your blog how much you enjoy your time there. I suppose the best way to look at this is it’s only a temporary delay to your birthday plans, I know it’s hard to imagine it at the moment but I’m sure in a few weeks you and your partner will be looking at dates again for the postponed celebrations.
I’ve just seen your latest blog entry from Thursday’s run, with lovely photos as usual. You’ve certainly captured the best part of the morning, with Victoria Tower providing a lovely atmospheric evening shot, and who is that handsome man posing in such a fetching shirt? :) I do hope you’ll keep your blog going, because people will worry about you if you don’t.

WtnMel: How did the pressure washing go? Were you planning on using it to clean paving flags? That’s what we use ours for, and it is quite effective at removing the moss and stains on the patio flags.
Did you manage to do your treadmill session this morning? I try to include long, hill and interval sessions each week too, but somehow the interval one keeps getting “forgotten” about.  I had intended to make today’s run my long one of the week, but as mentioned below I had to cut it short as my knee was becoming increasingly more painful the longer I ran.

Molly: I’m intrigued about your dye garden, what do you use the dyes for? Do you always plant the same ones, or vary them each year? I hope by now your madder seeds have arrived, although I must confess I’ve never heard of madder seeds until now. What colour do you get from them? Have you managed to get started on your spring yard cleanup?
I’m so sorry that Brian’s appointment has been cancelled too. Will he be able to get a telephone appointment? I know that’s not ideal but it would be better than nothing. It must be worrying that his ankles are still swelling, it might set both your minds at rest if you could get a second opinion from your own doctor. As things stand Steve’s name has been added to the list of those patients who are waiting for a heart monitor, so we’re assuming (providing nothing changes in the meantime) that he will in time get fitted with one, but at the moment there is no knowing when that will be.
It’s a shame your legs are feeling heavy at the moment, I go through spells like that too, when for some reason my legs feel as if I’ve done a lot more running than I actually have. I hope your cross training went well yesterday and that your legs feel up to your planned 6 mile run today.

HS: I bet you’re pleased now with your snap decision to do the 5k challenge, how wonderful to achieve such a great pace. I’d love to be able to run that fast. What a shame though that you are having to run solo now, it would have been interesting to see what you could have achieved if you’d had another runner alongside to push you on.
I wish we had a Waitrose near us, our nearest one is in Newcastle upon Tyne. Some exciting news though - I’ve finally managed to get a delivery slot with Sainsbury’s for next Thursday! I was so delighted I was almost dancing around the kitchen, however I suppose I should hold my excitement in check until the delivery actually arrives and I find out what substitutions have been made for items that I’ve ordered but turn out to be out of stock at the time of delivery.

I went for a short run this morning just as it was getting light. I was disappointed to find my right knee was quite painful while I was running, and in a different place too. Originally the pain was on the outside (i.e. the right hand edge) of my knee and going across the front of it. Today it was on the inside. My left knee was a bit sore too. I’m wondering if it is because I’ve been doing a bit of road running lately. I didn’t feel it when I was stretching afterwards, or as I walked home, just during the run, as my foot was striking the ground. I’m due to contact the physio again to give an update on how my knee is, so I’ll see what she suggests. It’s quite odd trying to get this diagnosed remotely, but while this lockdown is in place it’s the best I can hope for.
Steve started his couch to 5k today. I think he was quite shocked at how unfit he’s become, today’s session was 8 sets of 1.5 minute runs with 1 minute walks, and that was quite enough for his first outing. Hopefully if he sticks to the plan and doesn’t try to rush things (as he probably will) then he should regain his fitness gradually over the coming weeks. I think the plan lasts about 9 or 10 weeks, but no doubt he’ll try to cram in everything in about half that time unless I keep an eye on him.

    Afternoon everyone,

HS - I hope you're right about my pace transferring to the roads - time will tell. My decision not to join the 5k relay was simply down to CBA and they're all quicker than me anyway :) The pressure washer work went off without a hitch (see below). When we were away on our spa weekend I went to a class and found I couldn't touch my toes either - in fact I was very inflexible. Well done re your 5k challenge - great pace there.

Aquarius - re your comment about Running Fox having a delayed birthday party - that's certainly what I'm planning on. See below re how the pressure washing went. And yes, I managed 4mls on the treadmill this morning (details below). Yay to managing to get a delivery slot (they are in short supply these days!). Sorry to hear your knee was painful after your run. In my limited experience we sometimes cause pains in other areas because we're subconsciously nursing the injury and overworking other areas. Fingers crossed Steve will be able to gradually improve his fitness.

I used the pressure washer yesterday to clean our patio slabs. A certain amount of reading of the manual and finding my way around the various controls beforehand. Then I switched on the water and waited to see if there would be any leaks in the hosepipe. Just a tiny one which we caught the drips from in our watering can and then I switched it on. It wasn't as noisy as I thought it might be and because I had it set to the minimum pressure, it wasn't powerful enough to damage anything. But it was enough pressure to quite easily remove several year's worth of dirt and grime. And as usual with these things, it's only when you've finished, the 'after' look of something makes you realise just how dirty it was before.

I did a 4ml treadmill run this morning in 39.36 .. so 9.54mm average pace which I was very happy with. I had the up-and-over door open which made it much more pleasant as I had a draught. I would have been visible from the road so was 'on show' for anyone passing the end of our drive.

Around 11am we had a video chat with Margaret's son and his family using Zoom. This was in preparation for the Zoom meeting next week for our youngest grand-daughter Georgia's birthday which the other grandparents will be joining in with as well. Zoom very easy to use - if you've not tried it yourself I'd recommend it if you've anyone you'd like to chat to and see rather than just a phone call.

  • Good afternoon everybody,

Aquarius, sorry to hear that you had to cut your intended long run short due to your knee hurting. Please be careful, as you know how long it took me to overcome my knee injury.

I was very pleased with yesterdays 5k run, especially as I hadn't set out to do it. It would have been interesting if I hadn't had to run solo, but it could be weeks before we get back to normal again. I may have said previously that the New Forest 10 mile which was to be held in July has been postponed until next year. I'm really gutted as I'm just getting back into race mode, and that race was my target.

Glad to hear that you have got a delivery slot with Sainsbury's for next Thursday. Hope they don't add substitutes for items that are out of stock that you don't want.

Just reading more detail on your knee injury. When mine was on the right hand side of my right knee, it was the meniscus. My latest niggle has been on the front of the knee cap. I think you are right that more road running may be the contributory factor for the problem. I think that is what is causing my latest. As you know, my physio recommended spinning , which certainly helped me to maintain my fitness. Unfortunately, unless you have your own stationary bike, you will be unable to try that as all gyms, leisure centres etc are closed.

Good to hear that Steve has started his Couch to 5k programme, but as you say, you will have to keep him in check.

WtnMel, glad to hear that your escapades with the pressure washer went off without a hitch. On the subject of pressure washers, one of those cold caller cowboys, offered to clean my patio with one. He said it would cost £150. I told him to go forth and multiply. that was about a year ago, thankfully he never came back.

Well done with your treadmill session, you are definitely getting quicker!

Good to hear that you are keeping in touch with family etc with Zoom.

I haven't got much to report, just a 4 mile recovery run this morning. Hoping to do a longer run tomorrow.
  • Oh well, we have been off for three weeks tomorrow.
On the works strava group things (2 different ones) I came 3rd and 2nd on the weekly leader boards last week I did 40k and the week before I did 30k.

    Hillstrider
Great time in that 5k B)

  • Good Morning Everyone,

RunningFox, Your blog is wonderful. How very frustrating about your cancelled birthday plans! I agree with Aquarius. No doubt you will be looking at a delayed birthday celebration in the near future.

WtnMel, Dog roses Ha! That is funny

Excellent job on your treadmill run!  I have a wonderful mental image of passersby stopping to watch you run on the treadmill.  You'll be providing a community service!

I am interested in the treadmill chart for pace equivalencies. Is that something that can be found online? Or, is it from a book?

We use a sort of mini power washer to clean the green mildew stains off of our fence.  It really works quite well, and, like you said, sometimes you don't realize how dirty things have become until they're clean.

How is your shoulder holding up?

HS, How fun to see the Cavern! Like the rest of the world, I was quite a Beatles fan, and I still appreciate their music.

I completely understand appreciating a slower way of life. I lived in New York City when I was in my 20s, and I loved it.  But, it would drive me nuts to live there at this point in my life.  Though, I do spend a fair amount of time in Boston, but I am always grateful to be able to come home to the quiet of our neighborhood.  And, I'm afraid that my driving skills have only gotten worse, so driving in Boston is pretty much out of the question for me.

The yard cleanup on Saturday did end up constituting my cross training for the day.  And, it may continue to do so for the next couple of weeks. Now, that we've started the cleanup, it is clear that there is a lot to do. And, as Brian is a bit restricted right now, I am doing most of the heavy work.

Excellent job on the 5k!  Woohoo!  I am sorry about your New Forest 10 mile run being cancelled.  It is really frustrating and difficult to figure out how to proceed in training for races right now.  Perhaps there is a fall race that you can aim for?

I'm supposed to start to start the marathon training program a week from today.  Theoretically, the marathon is in October.  But, it is hard to have faith that it will happen.  I figure that I'll just concentrate on taking the training one week at a time, and even if the the marathon doesn't happen, I'll at least get the training cycle in.

Aquarius, I make my living as a fiber artist. I weave pieces that are sold in galleries and art shows.  As such, I dye my own fiber, so it helps to have a dye garden. Until fairly recently, I chiefly used synthetic dyes. But, over the last few years, I have been switching over to natural dyes. A beautiful dye in shades of red comes from madder root. However, as far as plants go, it's not a very attractive one.

I am glad that Steve will be getting a heart monitor at some point, hopefully, in the near future.  Good for him for starting the 5k program. Even though it is tough going for now, it must be a boost for him to be able to be moving.

Brian can't even get a phone consult because of regulations requiring that first visits to a doctor must be in person.  We are just taking it one day at a time, right now. And, I think there is some slow improvement taking place.

Yikes! your knee. That must have been a scary feeling to have a new area of sharp pain.  One thing that may or may not apply; how old are your shoes?  I've noticed that with all of the running that I normally do on the road, it is really important for me to change my shoes every 4-5 months. I hope that your physio is able to help.

Damien Nagle, It's great that you are still finding ways to compete via Strava. It will definitely keep you motivated. Congratulations on your results!

Instead of my planned 6 miles, I ran a 5k yesterday on the treadmill and set the incline at 2.5%.  Except for the first half mile, which was a slow 12:30 mm warmup, I kept the pace between 8:45-10 mm.  My legs have been feeling tired and heavy, but I think some of that was psychological and I just needed to shake them up. They responded really well to the harder workout, and I feel better mentally around the running. However, my quads are pretty tired today, and a little sore.  Happily, today is a rest day.

    Happy Monday everyone

HS: I found some exercise “tests” posted online by a physio which can be done to check if your knee pain could be due to a meniscus injury, but none of the tests I did brought to light any relevant symptoms so I’m hoping it’s not that.
It’s very disappointing that your New Forest 10 mile has been postponed. I had three 10k races lined up for this month, the first of which would have been yesterday. So many races have been postponed until the autumn, I think the calendar then is going to be quite congested.
I have an old exercise bike in the garage which no longer fully works. A couple of years ago it fizzled and popped when I plugged it in, and since then it’s had no power. I can still pedal on it but there’s no display and I can’t alter the resistance level. At the moment it’s buried under various bits and pieces but I keep thinking of resurrecting it, as even without power it’ll be better than nothing.
Today is a rest day, and luckily my knee feels fine, so if it’s still ok tomorrow morning I’ll go for a run.

WtnMel: Like postponed races I think the number of postponed birthday celebrations will be quite numerous too.
Great pace for your treadmill run, and by opening the up and over door I imagine it will have almost felt like running outdoors.
If I try to touch my toes without stretching first I’m unlikely to reach them, but after stretching I can usually manage. My hamstrings seem to be constantly tight so it’s always something I have to work at.
Good work with the pressure washer, it really does make quite a difference doesn’t it?

Damien: you’re definitely making good use of your time off work, congratulations on your Strava placings.

Molly: It looks like that was a good call to change your planned 6miles to a 5k as you benefited mentally as well as physically from the shorter run. Since your legs were feeling tired you might have found the longer distance less rewarding psychologically if you didn’t enjoy it.
Enjoy your rest day (and look after those quads :) ).
As I’ve mentioned above my knee seems ok today, so I’m keeping fingers crossed it’s just a general stiffness, which I should be able to get rid of over time. My shoes are only a couple of months old, so I don’t think they are to blame.
How ridiculous that Brian cannot get a phone consultation just because he hasn’t had a face to face one first. Surely the rules could be relaxed during this time of social distancing? I hope as you say there is some improvement in his condition, even if only slowly, at least it’s in the right direction.
What an interesting profession you have Molly, it must be really rewarding to be doing something you love (especially growing your own dyes). I’ll resist the temptation to ask if you have green fingers 😉
  • Good afternoon everyone,

Damien, you are doing really well on your works Strava leader boards. A good weekly mileage will help you to maintain and improve your pace.

Thanks, I'm very pleased with my 5k time as I hadn't intended it to be a 5k challenge.

Molly, when I lived in Liverpool, the music scene was amazing. Many of the pubs had bands, which on the whole were excellent. There were lots of clubs too, which booked top groups. I saw The Kinks, Rainbow and Stray Cats. A friend that I worked with was the base player with a band called The Chase, and they played once in the new Cavern. Another band that I knew was called Afraid of Mice and they appeared on Top of the Pops. I've got their LP.

I was in my thirties then, and out most evenings after work. Nowadays, I'm quite happy staying in and relaxing.

I'm not so keen on driving these days either. It must be an age thing, because I was an auditor for a couple of years and drove all over the country visiting contractors. I don't need to drive much now, so I suppose I am out of practice.

Your yard clear up sounds like hard work, and would seem to be ongoing.

Thanks, I'm very pleased with my 5k time and as I said above, it didn't start out as a 5k challenge. I've entered the New Forest Half Marathon which is in September, but whether or not it goes ahead is anyone's guess. I suppose it's the same with your October marathon. Just keep up the training which is all we can do really.

I've never heard of fibre artists, sounds very intricate. You must be very talented to have your work displayed in galleries and art shows.

That's bad that Brian can't even get a phone consult, but good that he seems to be making some improvements.

I see that you took on the 5k challenge on your treadmill😁

Make the most of your rest day.

I ran 6 miles this morning, but what a change in the temperature. There was a very strong and icy cold wind, which made the going tough.

    Afternoon everyone,

HS - the race I was thinking of doing in October (Tring Ridgeway Run) is still scheduled to take place and entries will open in May. By then, lots of cancelled events will probably have been re-scheduled so we may be spoilt for choice regarding races to enter. We had a tree surgeon last year who did a crap job - we haven't seen him again but will be telling him to go forth and multiply if he re-appears. Re your later post .. I still get plenty of practise driving to golf etc so don't feel like I'm out pf practise just yet. But I really don't enjoy driving at night any more as the headlights seem far too bright. And when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Molly - glad you liked my pun-tastic joke :) I looked at the treadmill pace conversion chart I printed in 2009 and it's still available online! You can find it here --> https://www.hillrunner.com/calculators/treadmill-pace-conversions/  My shoulder seems to be okay - it's obviously getting better (or I haven't been doing enough gardening). How interesting to hear you are an artist. I may have mentioned Margaret is a fund-raiser for a charity that has artists working with older people (who would otherwise be lonely) and I'm sure those artists would be interested to hear you grow your own dyes.

Aquarius - almost like running outside on the treadmill with the up and over door open and if I hadn't had my earphones in I might have just been able to hear the outside world over the noise of it :) I'd imagine Molly does have green fingers (and blue ones, red ones, purple ones ....)

It's definitely colder today - I've been up a ladder in the garden trying to find a new home for the nest-box on our beech tree and my fingers were starting to go a bit numb in the wind. Anyway, plans A & B didn't work - but I did eventually find a new position where I think it's high enough and pointing in the right direction (as per RSPB advice) and doesn't move around too much in the wind.

I emailed an ex-work colleague earlier - she was telling me what my ex-employers have been up to. Apparently on the one hand they're trying to be touchy-feely with the current lockdown and everyone working from home. While at the same time telling everyone they HAVE to take 10 days holiday by the end of June (but no-one can go anywhere!).

    Good morning everyone,

HS: Was your knee alright during your 6 mile run yesterday? As you didn’t mention it I’m assuming it was. The weather was very cold here too yesterday, such a change in the temperature from Sunday. I was glad I wasn’t running, instead I had a rest day, not even any circuits or yoga.

WtnMel: With luck your Ridgeway Run should go ahead in October, although at the moment it’s hard to see when the running calendar will resume. It’s good to have something to work towards though, and you are putting in some sterling work on that treadmill.
We’d agree with you about car headlights, I often mistakenly think the car coming towards us is on full beam when they’re just using normal headlights. Why do they need to be so bright and dazzling? (Or is it just something your eyes do to you as you’re getting older ?)
I hope your re-sited nest box attracts some visitors, and that they are suitably grateful to you for the trouble you took to find just the right spot.

I was surprised to see a hard frost when I went out this morning. The pavements were alright to run on but the grass and house roofs were white (as was my breath). I ran to the park to do some hill work. It took about 10 minutes to get my satellites, which I suppose could have been due to the cold temperature. In a funny sort of way it was quite nice to see the frost, it must have awakened some memories as I found myself thinking about last November/December, which was oddly comforting - a time when we were blissfully unaware of what was in store for us at the turn of the year. As I turned and ran down the hill the clouds gathering around a distant church spire had the look of snow bearing clouds and brought Christmas memories to mind. Then I remembered it was April and I had to get back home before the dog walkers appeared. In the last few minutes of my run when I was back on the narrow Derwent Walk I came across a man with 5 or 6 dogs, all off the lead. He managed to grab hold of most of them as I squeezed past.
Steve was just going out for his couch to 5k run when I got home and he reported seeing quite a few runners and dog walkers while out. I definitely think it’s worthwhile making the effort to get up a bit earlier to avoid other people.
My (right) knee was mostly okay while I was running, but I did notice occasional twinges in both knees on the descents. The cold weather probably didn’t help either, despite wearing gloves my hands were numb.
I hope the weather is better for the rest of you this morning. I believe it’s supposed to improve over the next couple of days.
  • Good morning all,

Aquarius, your yesterdays post crossed with mine! It's good that it seems like your knee injury isn't the menisci, so hopefully isn't too serious.

I agree that with all the races being postponed to later in the year, this will inevitably lead to congestion and clashes. I'm still hoping that the New Forest Half Marathon scheduled for September will go ahead.

Good luck with getting your exercise bike into working order. Glad to hear that your knee felt ok during your rest day.

My 6 mile run yesterday was going really well until around 3 miles, but running over some uneven ground, I did feel a twinge in the front of my right knee cap. I eased back a bit, and it was ok. I'm not running today, so hopefully will be ok tomorrow.

There was no frost here this morning, but it was still very cold. That man with all his dogs off the lead was very thoughtless and anti social. They could have jumped up at you and scratched your legs. I've been running in a part of the forest which doesn't attract many dog walkers. They would have to be locals, to find their way into that area.

Good to hear that your right knee was mainly ok, but that you had twinges in both running down hill. Downhill running is always hard on the knees, and that it why training schedules don't recommend downhill efforts to often.

WtnMel, glad to hear that the Tring Ridgeway Run in October is still scheduled to go ahead, but I don't think that I will enter it. As said previously, there will probably be a lot of rescheduled races later in the year, so we could possibly be spoilt for choice.

Good that the cowboy tree surgeon hasn't put in another appearance, but that if he did, you would send him away with a flea in his ear!

Most of my driving has been driving to races, but as there haven't been any, it's been mainly driving into the village for shopping. Until the lock down, I always walked to my local Tesco, but as the queues have been horrendous, I've been going to Waitrose for the 7.30 to 8.30am OAP slot. I'm only shopping twice a week, and running on the other days.

Hope the new position for the nest box will prove successful.

Sounds very confusing the instructions being issued by your ex employers. Will the 10 days holiday be paid?

I've got nothing much to report except that I drove into the village for my shopping this morning. I was very surprised though that the Tuesday market was "up and running again."

  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
    Afternoon everyone,

Aquarius - I will have to 'train up' (double my LSR distance) for the Ridgeway Run but it's do-able for me (10 miles) and a useful thing to have in the calendar to work towards. Re bright headlights, I think it's a combination of our eyes but also the introduction of new LED headlights which appear brighter (although apparently they're not - its the blue light makes them seem that way). I'm keeping an eye on the re-sited nest-box to see if it attracts any blue tits - it will take a few days I'd imagine if it's going to happen. It's not as cold here (darn sarf) but it was a bit cooler in the garage for this morning's treadmill run. Glad to hear that six-dog man at least tried to make room for you but sorry to hear your knee is still complaining.

HS - hope your knee is none the worse after yesterday's little twinge during your run. As you know, the main attraction of the Ridgeway Run for me is it's my 'hometown' race and my family are able to come and see me and we have a family meal together the night before. As far as I know the 10 days leave is paid and I'd imagine my ex-employers are trying to ensure there isn't a rush to use up holiday before the end of year deadline. It does seem a sledgehammer approach though - I can't see why they couldn't allow unused leave to roll-over to the following year or something? That is surprising to hear the Tuesday market is already up and running again!

This mornings treadmill run was a 40 min 'rolling hills' one - I managed 3.25mls and it was hard work by the time I'd got to 6% incline so I had a 2 min breather at a slower speed after the peak of the run before winding the treadmill back up to 5.5mph for the remainder.

I've not decided what to do this afternoon but I notice the grass probably needs cutting again already ..

Decided to take a photo of the nest-box I mentioned (zoomed in so looks a bit blurry!) ..

  • Good Evening Everyone,

Aquarius, I dug up an old photo just for you   A few years back, my husband and I were supposed to attend a fancy work event for his company. It was formal enough that I even got my nails done. However, I was also frantically working to make a deadline. Nails do not hold up well with some of the work that I do, and there are other issues, as well. Needless to say, I kept my hands hidden as much as possible at the event.

I'm so glad to hear that your knees are fairing better. Be careful on the declines, they can be really tough on the knees. And, oh my gosh, the gentleman with the dogs is truly an unfortunate accident waiting to happen.  I hope that you won't see him again.

How is Steve liking the couch to 5k program?

HS, There was a day when I would have given a lot, possibly my firstborn, to see the Kinks or the Stray Cats.  I'm glad that you had the chance to see them!

My fingers are crossed for your New Forest Half Marathon to go on as planned.  We are all just going to have to have faith that things will return to something close to normal.

Re: my profession, there is a saying that talent will get you in to art school, but hard work is what gets your work sold. As I never went to art school, I suspect that I fall more in the hard work than talent end of the spectrum.

How frustrating to have your knee twinge. You were wise to back off, and, hopefully, today's rest day will take care of the issue.

WtnMel, Thank you so much for the link to the treadmill/pace chart. That is a really nice reference to have.

I did not know about Margaret's charity work. That's a wonderful thing. And, yes, I also have pictures attesting to an entire rainbow of hand colors, depending on the project that I am working on.

Excellent job on the nest box. And, great picture. Now, I am excited to hear about the future occupants.  I hope that they turn out to enjoy cameras

Holy cow! That sounds like a killer rolling hill workout.  Good for you!  You'll be tearing up the Tring Ridgeway Run in the fall!

I sat on the bike this morning for a 'bleeping' hour.  I don't know what it is about the bike, but it really is hard for me to summon the patience for it.  I've taken to listening to audio books while I pedal.  Once again, I'm planning on a six mile run tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes...

  • Nice nails and enjoy the six mile run.

    Afternoon everyone,

Molly - seeing that photo, I can imagine you had to keep your hands hidden at the posh works do. Shame the fashion wasn't like in the fifties when you could have worn long gloves with your posh frock! :) Your comment about hard work being what gets work sold reminded me of the other saying about how successful people who are referred to as 'lucky' say the more they work at their chosen profession, the luckier they get. Glad you found the link to the treadmill paces useful. Thankfully that rolling hills programme only peaks at 6% incline for a couple of minutes - I try and make it harder for myself by not slowing the speed I've set the treadmill to as the incline increases. I have a friend who does Ironman triathlons and she has her turbo trainer (stationary bike) set up with something called Zwift on her laptop. With Zwift, she can take part in 'virtual' races against others on turbo trainers. For the next three days Geraint Thomas (Tour De France winner) is doing a 12 hour 'shift' on his turbo trainer to raise money for the NHS - so this morning my friend Sam(antha) was riding with Geraint, or 'G' as everyone calls him. Along with thousands of others no doubt!

This morning I re-seated the rotary washing line which had been starting to lean over at an alarming angle - this afternoon I did some more work on weeding and digging over the borders in the back garden where the main problem was that ivy had been creeping everywhere. While I was doing that Margaret was sifting through the contents of one of the compost bins. She's got a large bucket of compost ready to spread over the newly-dug borders along with some rotted leaves from the year before last which will both help make the soil better for planting.

  • AquariusAquarius ✭✭✭
    Good afternoon everyone,

WtnMel: Great job on the rolling hills treadmill run, a 6% incline must have been pretty tough.
Any takers yet for the des res nestbox? I hope you are keeping your camera handy.

Molly: When I saw your nails the first thing I thought of was The Wizard of Oz. Actually, forget about your fibre work, I think you could start a fashion trend, get thousands of followers on social media and make a fortune.
I can sympathise with your boredom on the exercise bike. I used to struggle to stay on for half an hour. I still haven't persuaded myself to start using it again, I think while there's any chance of running outside I will opt for that rather than the exercise bike.
I hope your 6 mile run today was more enjoyable than your bike session.
Steve has already managed to develop an "injury" which he has self diagnosed as a trapped nerve in the glute region. I think it's probably just general stiffness as he hasn't exercised for over a couple of years. He should have been running tomorrow, but instead will wait another day and see if the stretching, icing and rolling he's doing will sort it out.

I've had a strange sort of day. I've actually been sitting at my laptop for most of it as I managed to get a further supermarket delivery slot and spent ages deciding on the most urgent items to order, then I composed an update for my physio regarding my knee, then did a few other tasks regarding banking etc. I also sent a donation to Captain Tom Moore's fundraising effort for the NHS. I don't know whether you've heard about that, he's a 99 year old ex army captain who decided to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday later this month. He's doing it to raise money for the NHS and had originally set a target of £1000, but he's smashed that. At the last count I heard he'd reached over six million pounds. He's doing it using a zimmer frame because he's recovering from a broken hip. What an inspirational man.
I'm also impressed by Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas who is cycling on his training turbo in his garage to raise money for the same cause. He's intending to do 3 back to back 12 hour shifts of cycling, to mirror the shifts carried out by medical staff in the ICUs. I've donated to his fundraising page too, he's also exceeded his target of £100,000 already. It's wonderful to see people getting behind these causes and coming together to help the NHS.
