  • Mel, Mrs JB uses bands for her workouts. I find them a bit awkward and they tend to slip.

Nit my best run ever today but I think just about the hottest. Absolutely roaring on the shadeless and mindless prom.
20.37 and a category win, but 20 seconds slower than last week.
  • Very frustrating, still no Internet access for my laptop.

JB, I have been age grade beaten at Bartley. It was inevitable, as our club president, who has just turned 75 was running, and started right at the front. He is an International performer, and has numerous gold medals throughout the age categories in duathlons and running races. His official time was 25.00, which wasn't that special by his standards.
My official time was 28.42, and I was 55th out of 125 finishers. My Vo2 max is now 49% and in the top 1% of my age category.

WtnMel, I've been informed by several friends that Google Maps are far superior to the cars satnavs, as they are constantly updating. I remember several years ago that you were using an app that reported accidents, diversions etc but I can't remember what it was.
  • HS, brilliant Vo2 max. And I've got another suggestion: avoid running where he does! It's funny that if you happen to habitually run at a parkrun with a resident star, you are sunk.
The opposite is also true. I know a  chap who routinely wins his age cat (65) at one of the Brighton courses with 24 mins. But there are much faster runners in the same age cat locally who simply don't run that course.
The moral of the story: don't take it so seriously. I wish I could take my own advice!
  • JB thanks. I think it's the first time he's done Bartley, as he usually runs at Brockenhurst or Southampton.
I try not to take it too seriously, as parkruns aren't races. Having said that the results are published on the Power of Ten site, and therefore contribute to the runners handicap status. This is what makes some runners treat it like a race, but I suspect most parkrunners don't know about Power of Ten, so aren't too bothered about their times.
  • HS It's always a bit of a mystery who gets their results uploaded onto Power of Ten. No problem with mine but my training partner who has been running for nearly 10 years doesn't feature at all.
  • JB, that's odd, perhaps he doesn't subscribe to EA.

The internet has come back on again, so I'll try to paste the steps for inputting parkrun barcode/qr code on here now.

It didn't work, so I'll have to type it again, but not tonight. It will probably be off line again tomorrow.

How to input parkrun barcode into Garmin Watches

    On the phone

4.Click settings and enter your name, barcode number, next of kin and there phone no.

    On the watch

    1. Press the top right hand button.

    2. Press and hold the up button on the left hand side.

3.Keep pressing the down button until you get to settings, not run settings. click it.

4.Press the down button until you get to WIDGETS and click. This should show "parkrun barcode"

5.Now exit the watch until you arrive back at the watch face that shows the time etc.

HS Wow what an amazing VO2 max, well done. The older you get the better you get, not many people can say that. Annoying to be beaten in your age group, but against someone with a pedigree like that it's no shame. Thanks for posting those barcode instructions, I'll see if I have time later today to try them out. I never bother with Power of Ten because the last time I looked there were only a few random results posted for me. Perhaps I should check again and see if that's changed at all. I couldn't work out (and still can't) why some races are recorded and others not, and I certainly didn't know parkruns were.

JB I feel for you running on a shadeless prom yesterday, it must have been torture, so to a category win with 20.37, and to be only 20 seconds slower than last week, is a good outcome. Of course you could always blame those 20 seconds on your grandfather duties on Friday, which I imagine in this heat must have been extra tiring. Loved watching Non Stanford win the triathlon, what an impressive well paced performance. I hope she reconsiders and hangs around for another season or two.

WtnMel Good job you were in the conservatory when your tv started to smoke, perhaps, like the rest of us, it was objecting to the heat?  How nice to have your own fruit to pick and freeze. That reminds me, we'll have to pop over the border into Northumberland for one of our favourite walks along a country road where we've picked blackberries in previous years. The last time we checked they were still quite small and green, perhaps they will have ripened by now. The trick is to catch them at just the right time before someone else has picked them all.

I dithered for days over whether to do the trail 10k on Saturday, but in the end I took Mel's advice and ran it slowly for enjoyment, and just forgot about times. I'd been stretching, rolling and icing all week, and up until Saturday morning I was still feeling sore and tight, but on Saturday I felt a bit looser so I took the plunge. Despite saying I wasn't bothered about times I was disappointed to be 5 minutes slower than my usual time for that course, but there were a lot of pluses to counteract that. For a start, despite the heat I managed to run it all, including the hills, which is more than a lot of people did. Also, I finally managed to get a 10k done this year. Since getting and recovering from Covid I've missed half a dozen 10ks that I would normally have done, and had actually entered most of then some months ago. Best of all was the sprint I managed in the finishing straight. I always try to end my races with a sprint but didn't think I had it in me yesterday. That was until I saw a runner halfway between me and the finish line and before I knew what was happening I had changed up a gear or two and out sprinted her. So all in all, I'm pretty happy with the outcome, particularly as I haven't noticed any niggles today, but I've booked a physio appointment for Thursday to see how those calves are doing. I've another 10k in a couple of weeks so I want to remain injury free for that.
  • HS, thanks for your efforts.

Aqua, well done. A sprint finish is good for morale. A very positive race report: you've restored your mojo. More 10ks to come and to work on whittling those seconds off your times.
I loved watching Non's performance too.
Less good from me. Went out early but still very hot and draining. Aim to run 15k but got to about 10k and everything started aching - knees, hips, back etc. Reminded me of the sort of aches you get in the latter stages of a marathon when you just know they are not going away.

Abandoned ship after 11km and had a miserable trudge home for the last 4km.

    Bad day at the office!

JB Sorry you had a horrible run this morning, no doubt this heat is taking it’s toll. Don’t forget you have done a lot of amazing running during this hot spell, so perhaps your body is asking for a bit of a rest. I believe some cooler weather is on the way, and we could all do with that.

Just had a thought - how energetic was the grandchildren’s visit? Too much rough and tumble perhaps?
  • AquariusAquarius ✭✭✭
Thought I’d post a picture of the race medal as it gives a good idea of the elements of the run - hills, trees and viaduct, and if you look carefully there’s a red kite flying over one of the hills. The area is famous for red kites.

    Afternoon everyone,

When I saw there were 9 new posts my heart sank - but it was you chatting rather than yet more spammers - hooray!

JB - I'll just have to see how I get on with these resistance bands. Not surprised at all your run on the prom in the heat was slower than usual. Chuckled at you advising HS what to do at parkrun but not doing the same yourself ;) Sorry to hear today's run had to be cut short.

HS - I typed out sorry to hear you've still no internet access on your laptop but I see it's back again. And I see you've been able to paste in the instructions for getting the parkrun barcode on your watch. My DIL gets messages from her phone displayed on her Garmin but I must confess, I can't be bothered to look up how to do that myself. Doesn't sound surprising your club president beat your age grade time given his background. Great VO2 max figure by the way. It was the first time I'd used Google Maps when driving .. I'll probably swap between that and the Waze app that I use. Waze is the one where you can report accidents etc. and I think it just has the edge over Google Maps when driving. But you can use Google Maps when walking so they both have their uses.

Aquarius - yes, I was glad I was there when the smoke started rising from the back of the tv .. hate to think what could have happened if I hadn't been there. Glad to hear you decided to treat that trail 10k as an enjoyable run rather than a race. But, no surprise you couldn't resist the temptation to sprint for the line :) Ooh .. nice medal!

We decided to give driving to Leamington and watching the grand-daughters dancing (for a brief while) a miss. Margaret sent her son a message with trepidation but the reply came back "Don't blame you - very wise". Phew!

Just wanted to add re yesterday's post, I've no idea why the polarisation of Margaret's glasses only affects the phone display when in 'landscape' - where's a scientist when I need one to explain this phenomenon? :)
  • Good afternoon everyone,

It seems like the laptop is working ok now, but it took nearly 15 minutes with a blank screen, except for a little cog spinning round. I almost logged out, but a message suddenly appeared advising that the update had been unable to be completed, and would have to be reversed.  After that, everything started appearing on screen. I'm wondering if it was trying to upload Windows 11, which I know is not possible. After all "the excitement" I'm calling it a day, and will read back etc tomorrow.
  • Aqua, stylish medal. Noticed that events are now handing out wooden medals and even wild flower seeds. I think that's rather nice.

Mel, as for my 'advice ' to HS, what's that old saying - so as I say, not as I do. Not that someone like HS needs any advice from the Mike's of me!

HS, I think the body on this occasion was complaining about a rather mad session I did on Friday with  20kg kettlebell. I'll never learn!
  • AquariusAquarius ✭✭✭
JB yes, I’ve got a couple of wooden medals from races last year. I like these trail ones though because each year they feature a different aspect of the race.
Ah, kettlebells. I might have known.
Here’s a photo Steve took just before I turned into the finishing straight. See what a good girl I am wearing my compression calf sleeves despite the heat (on physio’s orders). o:)

  • That's a good action shot Aquarius!
We had wooden medals at the Salisbury 10 mile race.
  • AquariusAquarius ✭✭✭
    Thanks HS.
4 mile run today in very sticky conditions, I wish it would rain.
  • 9 miles for me this morning. First 10k in the forest with Sarah F and Paul, and last 3 miles solo on roads. 100k this month.
  • Aqua, great photo. Needs framing and displaying!

    HS, that's a good day's - and month's - work.

Thankfully much fresher today. No run for me as my back is still playing up, some sort of very mild spasm. It never rains. No, I actually mean it never rains ......

Went to the specialist today to have something that's come up under my eye examined. It's a bit of a pest as my glasses rub against it. It's also rather unsightly. More worryingly it could be something really nasty. However, the specialist said its harmless but he could remove it if it's in any way bothering me.
The truth is that it does bother me but not enough to have another boody great scar, after another one was removed a couple of years back.

To the allotment to water, knowing that
    a. If we did it would rain
    b. If we didnt it wouldn't

    We did and it will.

2 really good marathons from European Champs. Really exciting.
  • Laptop is down again. It's been fine over the weekend. I think it's something to do with the weather, like temperature and air pressure. I've read that Freeview could be affected, and that we shouldn't try to retune, as it would right itself.

Another scumbag has posted its rubbish and I have flagged it. 4 more needed.
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
    Afternoon everyone,

I've flagged the spammer .. the spamkiller twins will probably be along at some point to help get rid of them.

HS - glad to hear the laptop is working again. My laptop has also been downloading updates recently but they've installed okay rather than not being able to complete. Well done re your 9ml run earlier today. Oh no - just read on and seen your laptop is down again :(

JB - I sort of assumed you wouldn't be following your advice to HS yourself! Kettlebells eh? re the mark under the eye - always best to get these things checked to put your mind at rest.

Aquarius - nice photo .. well done for being a good girl and wearing the compression gear. Well done re today's 4ml run.

JB mentioned framing Aquarius's photo. Earlier on we picked up some photos/pictures we've had re-framed. The guy did say to me "Over to you now to get them on the wall" ;)

We were 'supposed' to go to the u3a monthly meeting after lunch but Margaret hasn't been sleeping with this recent heat - so we gave it a miss.

Our neighbour (at the front) has just cut down a small plum tree that hung over the fence he erected. The fence is on top of a stone wall and I remember at the time his wife said why not chop it down then to make putting up the fence easier. I guess he finally saw the logic of what she was saying ;) It hasn't been producing that much fruit lately so not a real loss.
  • AquariusAquarius ✭✭✭
Spammer flagged - what a nuisance they are.

JB Thanks for watering your allotment, the rain has finally arrived here. It was misty and overcast yesterday, but actual real rain arrived today. Glad to hear the mark under your eye wasn't anything to worry about. I hope the twinge in your back is feeling easier today, that run on Monday must have been the culprit.

WtnMel I can sympathise with Margaret, I've found it very difficult to sleep recently due to the heat. These new build houses are well insulated and retain heat, which is great in winter because even without the heating on it feels warm when you come in from outside. However despite all the fans we've bought it's been difficult to get cool, as the fans just seem to be circulating warm air. Pity you had to give the U3A meeting a miss. Has your toe/foot problem eased to the extent you will be able to resume your golf matches with Alan?

HS Oh dear, you are having a lot of trouble with your laptop at the moment. Did you get in touch with Andy yesterday? I'm going to try to follow your instructions today to put my parkrun barcode on my Garmin, wish me luck!

I decided to start a new 10k training plan today with Garmin as I feel I need a more structured approach to my training. So today was a benchmark run to get the plan set up, tomorrow is an easy 3 mile run and Thursday is a time trial. This morning's benchmark run was only a 5 minute run, which was probably just as well as the heavens had opened and the rain was belting down. Actually, it felt rather nice after all this heat.
  • Aquarius, I didn't contact Andy yesterday, because the laptop was working fine over the weekend. I'd assumed it was ok, and didn't switch it on until the afternoon. I will give it a try this afternoon and hope for the best. I must try to catch up, but it will probably be just a general comment after reading several days worth of posts. Good luck with setting up your parkrun barcode and qr code. It worked fine at Saturday's parkrun. They said that it was easier to scan the qr code than the barcode.
It rained this morning but didn't last long.
  • Biff .. and they're gone! :)
  • WtnMelWtnMel ✭✭✭
    Afternoon everyone,

Aquarius - I'm glad (as is Margaret) that the heat has now gone away. I'm thinking I'll look at how much small air-conditioning units cost and maybe get one for next summer (or the next heatwave?). We weren't too bothered about missing the u3a monthly meeting .. I think it might have been too warm in the village hall yesterday anyway. Yes, the foot/toe problem seems to have gone away so golf 'battles' re-commence this coming Friday. Good luck with your new training plan - I expect the rain did feel nice during your run after days and days of heat.

HS - I hope for your sake the various updates that seem to be plaguing your laptop stop soon so it starts working normally again. I switched on my 'old' (spare) laptop and the first thing it did was start downloading updates. So much so, Margaret's laptop was unresponsive, so I had to shut it down again.

Some light drizzle first thing but it's stopped and there's no sign of any thunderstorms or 'proper' rain.

I cleaned up our drive on our side of the wall where the plum tree from next door used to be - some rotting plums that had fallen off and moss that had been growing underneath.

Earlier on I went to the mobile bank to pay in the swim takings from the weekend. There was a queue including some people I knew from my time as a member of the local bowls club. I heard all about the ups and downs on the committee and the various ructions that have taken place since I left. He used to be Treasurer but said he gave up because of all the hassle (however, I know there were some people there who found him arrogant and hard to work with). I didn't mention any of that but I explained I left due to lack of time but also, because I didn't get on with some people.
  • Good afternoon everyone,

The laptop is online again, but I don't know how long for! I've read back, but will just comment on the latest posts.

Aquarius, well done for your trail 10k, finishing with a sprint. I like the photo of the race medal, and also that one of you running, which I've already commented on. Well done for yesterdays 4 miles.

JB, sorry to hear about your aches and pains, and that your back was still aching yesterday. Also sorry that you have had something appear under an eye, but good that the Specialist advised it was harmless.
I enjoyed watching the marathons too.

WtnMel, Regarding our Club President who finished ahead of me at Saturdays parkrun, in a "slow" time for him; it's not surprising as he did 4 track races in the Civil Service Championships in 4 different distances on Wednesday. I'm amazed that he ran at all!
I remember now that it was the WAZE app that you advised notified accidents etc.

I hadn't noticed that you advised that smoke was coming out of the back of your TV. Thank goodness that you were there to see it in time, before it caught fire!

I see that you have had some photos reframed.  I've got a photo of me running with Sarah F in the New Forest half marathon a couple of years ago, and one of me with Sarah H, before the start of a Salisbury 54321. They both had them framed for me, and presented them to me during my birthday bashes in our favourite pub/restaurant in the village.

I do hope that the laptop doesn't try to do any more updates, they are a pain in the axxe!

I remember you telling us about the snooty unfriendly people in the bowls club, that being the reason you left.

I haven't got much to report, except that my left knee started aching during the last 3 miles of yesterdays 9 miler. It was ok during my walk to and from the supermarket this morning, but I did get very wet from the rain, which stopped soon after I got home.
  • Mel, interesting observation on the trials of village life and getting involved. In many ways it's idyllic that the sense of community is alive and well but its not for everyone. Our 4 year stint of village life was many years ago. I was secretary if the cricket team and Mrs B ran the playgroup. But neither of us really threw ourselves into village life and we were both happy to move back into the anonymity of townie life. Mind you, it was in Wales.
Glad the toe will allow you to do weekly battle on the golf course.

Aqua, thanks for the good wishes. My back was getting very painful and then I did some stretches and that my were very effective (piriformis muscle).

HS I think we  it got the same weather system this morning and it was pretty volatile so no wonder your electronics were playing up. The rain was torrential for a while. We were so pleased to see it that we just took it in turns to watch out of the window. The garden could do with plenty more though.

As I've been lying around for the vest part of 2 days, I waited for the rain to clear and then went out and attacked some hills with some relish. I didn't measure time, distance or elevation ( or heart rate) but just kept attacking various slopes, sometimes giving myself a bit of a breather when I needed it.
The ultimate result was approx 70 minutes of very hard running.
  • Good afternoon everyone,

JB, I think our posts may have crossed!
My laptop was ok yesterday, hence the post.

It seems that your back has recovered, being that you did some tough hill work yesterday. 70 minutes was very hard core, and I'm hoping that you are not "paying for it now!"

This morning was 6 hill reps in the forest, with sprints over the top, with Sarah F and Mike.

It's been raining heavily this afternoon, with lots of thunder ⛈️, but havent seen any lightning. The rain has eased off now, but still thundering.
