When I first started running I ran with a tape player, but only did so a few times in training. Strangely, I just didn't like it! Much prefer to hear the sounds of the outdoors when running. Wouldn't even consider running with music now. Besides, my brain can play back stuff so well, who needs a walkman?
I haven't tried the walkman option, but just thinking about getting sweat in headphones, then wearing them again the next day (e.g. to work, on the train, with all those people seeing them !) !? It wouldn't encourage me too much !
I've got a tune I composed myself, it starts off with a "Raw Sex" type keyboard and bongo type"rhythmn that grew on it's own from developing a 3:2 breathing rhythmn to avoid a stitch (it seems to work!!) then, on the fourth hill a steady thread of F**K F**K (repeat to top), with occasional bursts of "why the F**K do I do this" then a great shriek at the top if I've managed it without walking. For a bit of a change, the same tune with b****r b****r....
All of this is mostly in my head luckily.
I really like the idea of ride a white swan though, can see how that would fit the rhythmn. Just watch out for the trees.
I to have composed my own little ditty. It's entitled 'A Step Nearer'. It goes like this - "Every step I take is a step nearer the goal Every step I take is a step nearer the goal...etc"
The 12" mix lasts about an hour (the longest I can run for at the moment).
You're welcome to borrow it - just put it to your own tune!
Happyslug - I believe I have sung something similar before now. I like the idea of composing a raw sex type keyboardongo emsemble to it. Another one of my internal sounds track is 'Let me show you the way to go' by the Jacksons
While out running this morning I had gone thru a few songs in my head, then for some reason I started counting every time my foot hit the floor till I got to 100 then I started again, then again, and so on, don't know why, but there you go...........
If there is one song that every runner should listen to, it is "Marathon" by Canadian rock band Rush. It was released in 1985, and is a fantastic song to listen to when running, as the lyrics are so insiring. A short extract of lyrics:
"It's a test of ultimate will, The heartbreak climb uphill. Got to pick up the pace, If you want to stay in the race."
and:
"You can do a lot in a lifetime If you don't burn out too fast. You can make the most of the distance, First you need endurance- First you've got to last-"
Go out and buy it, you should be able to pick it up for about a fiver, these days.
Spirit of Radio is not bad either! Did you know that Rush are still about these days? They released a new album earlier this year, it's a bit heavier than usual, but good none-the-less.
cheers al, now on the way from amazon, 8 quid and by the reviews well worth spending.i obviously missed this one originally as i was more into rainbow, scorpions. thanks

It goes:
Every step I take
Is a MOTHERF******R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DIE! DIE! MORONS DIE!
Best suited to running when roads and pavements are full of slow movers
Another one of my internal sounds track is 'Let me show you the way to go' by the Jacksons
Especially "let's go back to church"
over and over again
please dont try to analyse this it just pops into my head and stays there!!!
