As a preventative measure I'm aware of various products that people use in the spike hole to prevent rusting and seized spikes, including Vaseline - although my favourite is lithium grease (mainly because that's what I have handy for various bicycle applications). A little dab in each hole after cleaning, I've never had any problems for a few XC seasons now.

All removed, and now all holes are greased and replaced with nice new ones.
Now I am back on track.
