Swollen Knee - Cause is mileage increase .... I am after hints and tips to maintain training plans

I have hit a swollen knee problems in the past - I last had the problem a few years ago caused by the ramp up in mileage on a marathon plan - I completed that Marathon ok but hit the swollen knee issue late in the cycle - 3 weeks from the event - so just eased back and tapered slightly earlier - run on the day went fine. However a few years later and my first marathon for a while I have hit the same issue but much earlier in the training. I will do the "listen to the body thing" and ease back a tad as I have probably been running too hard (I need to add some easy runs). However I am after any tips and guidance on what helps and what to avoid - I will try ice and elevation - any other guidance ? Thanks
