Garmin Forerunner 305 Route Truncated & Location Memory Full

I use the Garmin FR305 mostly for walking. I upload routes as .gpx files and download tracks with EasyGPS and ExpertGPS. I am unsure what do to when I get Route Truncated and / or Location Memory Full messages, so resort to doing a full reset and have to set up the data fields etc. again. Is there any other way of clearing data to avoid Route Truncated and / Location Memory Full errors? I've tried deleting History and Routes but that doesn't help.
