Running Frequency

I'n not sure if this is a silly question or not, but here goes...

Is there a greater training benefit from running more often but for shorter distances? For example, to keep it simple, if I wanted to run 20 miles per week, would I get fitter running 4 miles 5 times a week rather than say run 10 miles one day and run 5 miles for two days?

I realise there's more to it than that, but generally, what would be the preference?

    It's not a silly question.

It depends what you're trying to do. If you're training for 5k, you might do better running shorter, faster and spreading it out through the week. If you're training for a half marathon, you'd probably be better off doing one long run and a few other short ones. If it's just for general health and wellbeing I'd go for the shorter, more regular runs.

Also, it depends what you enjoy doing. If you do what you enjoy, you're more likely to keep it up and consistency is probably the most important thing when building fitness.
