Forgot to say a couple of things last time:

Welcome back Ramjet. Good to see the solid mileage planned and good target time.
There's some solid mileage planned and good target times on that list.

Steve - Great that you're doing New York next year. Should be awesome!

Just entered Wokingham half, so will hopefully catch lots of people there. Also got the Reading half 5 weeks out from London.

Tom - you ran 1:13 at Wokingham last year. Planning on carrying 2 minutes worth of sandbags?
  • I’ll see you at Bath too Tom, although I highly doubt I’ll ahead of you at any point on either of those occasions!  :p

HA I just emailed them with my background and goals. I was quite surprised to be picked as I assumed they’d want people with massive social media presences etc. Very similar to the RW one Reg, yes - I don’t think they do one now do they? As several have said, will be interesting to see what training they suggest as I'm definitely atypical ;)

Met up with SQ this morning for a tempo session around the local racecourse. Plan was 14, 12, 10 mins at LT with 4 min recoveries. I initially felt quite good on the first effort but a mile in we turned in to the wind and my legs just felt totally flat. Tried to hang on to SQ but he gradually eased away. Finished the first effort at 6:17/mi average so not terrible compared to other recent sessions, but slower than I was hoping for. On the second one I struggled even more and was feeling a bit light headed towards the end so I let SQ crack on and just jogged it in.

A bit disappointing as I was hoping for a good session with someone to work with. Clearly a busy weekend and Monday has caught up with me. I think it was the right decision to bin the final effort though. Will take things easy for the next few days and hopefully rebound for a decent track session on Saturday.

  • RamjetRamjet ✭✭✭
Bad luck with that session RSR. No point killing yourself if your legs don't have it that day.

First MLR for a while this morning - 12 miles averaging 7:55. Windy but the forecast rain held off.

Looking at the target marathon times I have noticed that this thread is getting quite elite! It is great having the faster people but hopefully the slower ones aren't getting scared off.

I like the idea of having HM targets as well. Have added mine.

    I've got my act together and the Valencia blog is already live, if anyone fancies a read;

Great read as ever Joe. Looks like you both had a wonderful time out there. Congrats again on the fantastic achievement-thoroughly deserved!
  • Loved the blog JB & the video of you at the finish. Marshals/medics looked slightly concerned for you. Not surprised after that finish. A brilliant race to round off an awesome year for you.

  • Welcome back indeed ramjet...  I was half an hour behind you in Chester... also disappointed.   Talking of me beig slow... everyone on the list is targetting sub-3 (except me).  It didn't used to be like this!

Congrats on the marathon team thing, spoons.  Well deserved.
  • Nothing can match the finish of Joe's Queenstown marathon last year - epic collapse and full ignoring by the tv camera. Really enjoyed the blog and still so impressed the last mile was your fastest, espeically when it wasn't exactly a soft PB.

    Welcome back Ramjet.

I enjoyed the tempo session with spoons yesterday, although was sorry to see him not 100%. I batted on to complete the final 10 mins, but started to feel very guilty half way through that I should have chekced you were ok. Hope you're feeling better soon. Paces for the 14,12, 10 mins were about 6:12 - 6:16. So definitely not target HM pace, but early days and it was tremendously windy.

Some more cracking day time running for HA - keep it up!

  • Great report as usual Joe, Your progression this year has been amazing, very inspiring! I continue to be impressed by how you wring every last ounce of performance out of yourself at the end of races.  It’s something I struggle to do, although I think I am definitely getting better at it.

No need to feel guilty SQ, I was hardly on death’s door! Great performance from you given the wind. I developed a cough not long after I got back and am full of cold this morning so that at least explains why I felt rubbish. I’m going to take a complete rest day today and then see how I feel from there. Frustrating as this week was supposed to be a peak week ahead of the Telford 10K, but trying to think bigger picture. Arriving fit and healthy for the start of marathon training is the priority.

  • AWCAWC ✭✭✭
NE: I definitely won't be targetting sub-3 when I get my name on the list!

Joe: on MT again this week - apparently you did a Yuki at Valencia at the end :D
  • Hmm, you all went away ! Posted congrats etc. on the old thread.

I may be doing Bath half with a few of you in March. I am booked in for Wilmslow half too. I am strangely attracted to Manchester and Newport marathons despite my previously stated antipathy. I have a lot on my plate though, so we shall see.
  • Back into the marathon training... I missed the autumn marathon this year for the first time in my 6 years of running marathons...the body felt it needed time off (aka i was lazy)

But signed up for Brighton Marathon and London Marathon 2 weeks later (my regular 2 marathons every year)

(Used to be on here as the tortoise for people who used to be on the threads a few years ago)
Good to see you back Ramjet.

Im just getting back into regular running at present by running 10k 4-4 times a week and then 18th Dec will hit the plan hard (well try and do as many of the sessions as possible at whatever pace i want rather than suggested Hmmm).

Hello all. Long time no see/read.
I'm in again for London, and will probably aim for 2:50 again. PD chasing is so last year, it's all about age grading these days....

    Thanks SQ.

Hello again FBT  ;) Just need Andrews back now and it will be like old days!

Hello also to Westy! Finished a few seconds behind you at Stretford Parkrun at the end of Sept but only realised when I saw the results.

NE - quite a few of my club mates had a bad day at Chester. Maybe the humidity really was a factor. Btw got reacquainted with Deepdale recently but Brentford spoilt the party. My daughter took a fancy to PNE’s Jamaican midfielder so hopefully we’ll be back.

Great blog JB. I’ve never known anyone to think they were going to fast at the start of a marathon and then get faster. All those long bike sessions paying off maybe?

Compressed 6 mile double for me today as had to leave work early but meant second run was in the daylight so not complaining.
  • Good to see you back on the team Rammers!
Yeah Andrews? Now there was a boy who liked to stick to a plan!
People on these forums get bloody quicker and quicker! And old fat boy here feels like one of the fat wheezy boys with a note from matron, while you young bloods link arms and go together for the glorious final scrum down.
I think I will wait to put my time up on the board!
  • How many last marathons have you done now, Westy?
Fat Tortoise... good to see you back too.
Ramjet.. you've been to Deepdale one more time than me this season. Just can't seem to get there.
Hey everybody... Muddy's found us.  Run!
  • Someone mentioned slower runners?

Well I guess I'm not that slow, but nothing compared to some on here. I'd like to join in if I may? I lurked a bit on the old thread. Currently building up to my first marathon, having sneaked a ballot place for London.

I've been running for about two years, but only casually at first, and ran my first race this time last year. I've run a few 10ks and HMs, but this feels like a leap into the unknown.

I've been averaging 45-50 miles per week for the last two months, and 35-40 mpw prior to that. Planning to follow the P&D up to 55 18 week plan, with a bit of DIY thrown in.

Target wise, I am not sure where I am, as had to DNS on my target autumn HMs due to illness. Current PBs are 5k 21:00, 10k 43:03 and HM 1:45 (xc / trail, very muddy).

A mate of mine who also ran the HM reckons I could target 1:37 / 1:38 in my build up, and I am planning to run Dorney Lake in late Feb. Will reassess London target from there. 3:30 is my dream time, but It may be spring will be too early for that.

Main goal for now is to execute the training well, improve as a runner and see what shape that gets me to come April.
  • sounds like you've got your head screwed on Andy.
