<div class="QuoteText">@StephenLT I can't quite believe its time for final long runs this weekend - I'm going on Sunday for 20, with the final few miles at marathon pace, then its taper time - no doubt maranoia will start setting in for us all (if it hasn't already)!!</div>
    </blockquote>
Haha that has already started with me! I ran a 1/2 marathon on Sunday ultra cautiously! Every day I wake up with a different ach!! Good luck with your 20 mike run on Sunday!

Thanks StephA - we inc 9 year old are staying in the Bastille area, so that's great info.  Whether my bunch will watch is another matter, still remember running a half marathon in Spain, waving up at an empty balcony as the race went straight past our hotel.
Suzanne Taylor - craft one yourself, many do.  Upload it,  if approved and a very high chance it will then your quids in, if not still time to get a proper one.

Anyone having issues with the medical certificate and their GP i have an email from Paris that states:

"You do not need to pass an ECG. Your doctor cannot be responsible for something happening to you during the race even if they said you are ok to run)"

If anyone needs a copy of this email pm me your email and i will send it over.

Got mine done at Cyclosports online in the end for £65 - ouch!

    race number is 00478

Running London two weeks later - anyone else doing the double

Andyc209 - I am doing the Tale of To cities double too.  I ran the Manc/ Ldn double in 2017 but that was 3 weeks apart.  I am #576 so see you in the red zone, literally.
  • andyc209andyc209 ✭✭✭
Ouch - is red the zone we are in - the website has my number on a blue race number but i assume thats a stock image. Can finally book flights now medical sorted :)

not sure how to take Paris - need my GFA this year so 2 goes at it - do i run Paris as a warm up for London or just go for it at both? Whats your tactics for both?

@StephenLT Last long run this weekend, did 20 last weekend, got 20 planned again this weekend with 12 at marathon pace. Then the beautiful taper.

Hope everyone elses training has been going well. Not long now!

Dom, look forward to hearing how you go in the Vaporfly's. The articles I've read suggest they really do make a difference, but for me eating fewer biscuits and getting more runs in would probably make an even bigger difference, so I can't justify them. Hope everyone's managing to find a way to get their Medical Certificate signed. I asked my brother who lives in France how it affects his children and he says they have to get a certificate signed every year to take part in sports clubs, but they've never had an ECG, it's usually just a short chat with the doctor.
Here's the latest entry list - hope I've got the right bib numbers for everyone:
    Red pen (Speed of light)
    478 - Andy
    576 - Ouch
    Yellow pen (3:15)
    tbc - Miles
    11586 - baldstan
    Blue pen (3:30)
    tbc - RFoster + 1
    18117 - Webby
    Violet pen (3:45)
    29096 - Carol
    31970 - Rammpants
    33683 - Khanivore
    37024 - StephenLT
    37337 - Rachaeltoon
    Green pen (4:00)
    42146 - phronesis
    Grey pen (4:15)
    59889 - Steph
    60566 - Suzanne
    Pink pen (4:30 plus)
    70609 - K83nd0n
    75031 - Andy
Ouch, I don't need a GFA (although a BQ would be nice), but having two shots at it sounds a good plan. Paris can be really warm, judging my previous two experiences, so if it's a hot day you could decide on the morning to hold something back and make London your target race. Bart Yasso recommends, I think, running a full marathon as the last long training run about 3 weeks before your target race.
StephenLT I'm planning on a 20 mile long slow run on Sunday - if I can find the time I'd really like to do 22, so I'm on my feet for about 3 hours 30, my goal time for Paris.

Good luck to those running both Paris and London.
I did that back in 2013. I ran well in Paris that year, but struggled badly in the later stages of London. I'd had a groin injury that I struggled with through training that winter, so my fitness and form wasn't anywhere near what it should have been.

    Cheers Baldstan.
Andyc - I am on a streak of 11 sub3's since April 2017. The plan is 2.48 ish for Paris and the same/ sightly slower for London.  I run 6 marathons full-on annually and tend to recover well and am well-motivated at the moment.  When I ran Manc/ Ldn in 2017, I ran Manc in  2.50.48 and London, 44 seconds quicker, 3 weeks later.   Also aware of Eggyh73 good point of not picking up an injury.  My advice would be to see what conditions are for Paris, luckily we start at 8.30 am before the heat of the day but reckon Paris would be your best shot as 2 weeks is not a lot of time to recover from a marathon, no matter how fast its run. What's your current thoughts?
  • Looking at the running numbers I must be in Violet and not purple.Oops.
  • andyc209andyc209 ✭✭✭
ouch - now that is a streak i could only hope for - i have a slight issue with really dodgy knees - oesto arthiritis is kicking in - my GP said stop running asap 18 months ago but a specialist said keep running although i think she meant something shorter than marathons :)

How my knees recover over the 2 weeks will be the main factor - i think it will be go for it in Paris as long as the weather is good - i need sub 3.10 for london and sub 3.15 for Boston so the pressure of chasing sub 3 is gone thank goodness - last one of them was 2 years ago - been around 3-3.10 over the last few years. Ran Tokyo last year in 3.15 but i think the flights played a part there.

  • OuchOuchOuchOuch ✭✭✭
andyc209 - Hah.  I have had knee pain issues which stopped me from running marathons for 5 years as my knees just got too painful, so this is my second chance. My 'cure' has been a daily ibruprofen tab (not without its risks), daily cod liver oil tab, glucostamine tab and I think best of all Flexiseq Gel - its not cheap but for my mind really worth it.
  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭
You really shouldn't be taking ibruprofen regularly, never mind daily!
We had a Doctor who ran Paris a few times who had some real horror stories of the damage people had done to their liver and kidneys due to taking that medication regularly.

  • andyc209andyc209 ✭✭✭
ah Flexiseq - i use it too - have to keep using it twice a day but i agree it does work - just have to keep looking for it on offer :) Eventually i will have a go at the Stem Cell treatment when i can afford it - spoke to the specialist already and there have been good reports. Did try the Glucosamine but did not seem to get much from it - i think the dose in most chemists/supermarkets is too low to be really effective from what i've read - might go back to trying it.

Did you stop running altogether to give your knees a break or just lighten the load for a few years?
  • OuchOuchOuchOuch ✭✭✭
Eggyh73 - I know, it was my then GP and triathlete who suggested this. I do  take as many natural anti-inflammatories as poss, CBD/ Hemp Oil tabs being the latest.
andyc209 - That's good.  I  just cut back to c15-20 miles a week, anymore and the knee just flarred-up. I will read-up on Stem Cell treatment and see if its worth it for me, V55 later this year.  I also run as much as I can on soft surfaces which also helps.
  • andyc209andyc209 ✭✭✭
has everyone got 6 months on their passports too - given the way MPs are still fighting. got mine updated last week.
Be aware - Stem cell is very expensive - been quoted prices between £5k to £10k per knee!! Still they can take the cells from belly fat so its 2 for the price of 1 - Liposuction and a new knee :)

Hard to tell - I certainly perceived a strong energy return, but then they were brand new, so may just be that new shoe bounce. Totally agree on maximal vs minimal gain. I can give myself another, more proven 4% performance boost by being less greedy.

On the double-marathon recovery theme, I’m now approaching 3 weeks back from running Tokyo and feel in no way ready to do anything long or tough!

baldstan - how did you find Tokyo - one of the most bonkers marathons i've ever done. Are you chasing the 6 star having ticked Tokyo off the list - i got mine in Tokyo 2017 - amazing experience crossing the line and realising that special medal was waiting at the end - shame its been stored in a box ever since :)

K83nd0n - dont think there will be much running in between the two races - just some light jogging - agree it always sounds like a good idea at the time.
  • Sounds like some of you guys are on a different level! Impressive times! My hot streak :-) was beating 4 hours for the first time with a 3hr 57 in New York in November! I am too chasing the 6 majors, so Tokyo is on my list, but just focusing on Paris and Berlin this year! Interested to hear more about Tokyo in general and how to get an entry?
I definitely will never do two marathons in 2 weeks! My body would never cope with that physically or emotionally! But good luck to all of you who are doing that!!

I just lucked out in the ballot. There were 500 runners from the UK there, 1000 from the States. I loved the place in general, and the marathon in particular was on another level in terms of organisation. Every 100m there was a volunteer with a rubbish bag so that you had zero excuse to drop any rubbish. At the end, a total 8 volunteers sequentially gave me a medal, a banana and a bottle, then wrapped me in a finisher's towel, a fleece, a poncho and a space blanket, before showing me to the metro...
  • Hi All, Paris is my first marathon. I'm 62201 in the Grey zone. I've not been to Paris for a while so I'm after some advice getting from the airport to the expo on the Saturday. Anyone know of a quick route via Metro etc?

Good luck! Well done for entering your first marathon! I have no idea how to get anywhere in Paris so I will leave others to reply to that!
  • Last long run complete! 21 miles in the bag and all felt good! Roll on Paris! So pleased to have made the taper! Good luck to everyone else with their runs this weekend!
  • StephAStephA ✭✭✭
@DavidRuns if at all possible, I would strongly recommend dropping your bags at your hotel before heading for the expo. What time do you arrive at CDG and where are you staying? I’ll try and help with routes if you let me know. The RER train goes from CDG to central Paris-I think that’s just under €20 or you can get an official taxi at the taxi rank for a fixed €50 or €55 depending on where you’re staying (avoid anyone trying to steer you to an unlicensed taxi!!)
  • I am in the grey pen as well, with bib number 63610!
  • baldstanbaldstan ✭✭✭
DavidRuns, Paris is a great choice for a first marathon. One thing to watch out for on the Saturday though will be any gilets jaunes protests. Some Saturdays when the protests have been bad they have closed the city centre metro stations. The Expo is far enough out not to be affected, but it might slow you down if you're trying to get to a hotel around the Champs Elysee, or trying to change at L'Etoile.
Andyc I've not done Tokyo yet, but would love to, probably not until the kids leave home though and I can take time to see some of the country as well. Dom sounds like it's a case of chancing the ballot then, so may have to give it a few goes. I'm hoping I might make Boston next year though. I missed the cut off by 7 seconds for this year, but they've tightened up the qualifying times for 2020 so I'll have to get a PB to have a chance.
