Waterproof shoes

Fingers crossed the South Downs 100km will be on, in late August. The route looks like it is mainly grass and trails, but nothing seriously hardcore underfoot. Mindful that 'bank holiday weather' can bring anything, what are peoples thoughts on waterproof shoes? I accept the reasoning that any water that gets into a waterproof shoe wont be able to get out, but providing you are not actually running in water, a waterproof shoe seems wise - I could see a few blisters forming with 16 hours of wet feet!
