  • Harmander, I’m also glad Trump has gone but Biden’s speech was so boring compared to a Trump speech.

Signed up for the Run till you drop February challenge, run the date in either miles or kilometres, I’m going for kilometres. Day 1 at least 1 km but it’s the last week that’s always a challenge up to day 28 = 28k. I usually make it to the 20th. I’ve got a half marathon on the 19th.

Also ran today in my first pair of Hokas. 3.04 miles in 7.57 pace, faster than I normally run, maybe new cushioning helped.

    YTD 116.76 miles

  • Donnie - your observations are spot on!

Fingers crossed for a full recovery and a full return to normal racing for you, Harmander... so you can do the Marine Corps Marathon.

Thanks David - excellent "RED-ing" by you... made even harder by some daily doubles there! :astonished:

Dubai - that February challenge sounds a lot harder than Run the Sum. Continued ramping up in volume seems tougher than the regular cut backs that I benefit from... best of luck with that (and the HM).

As required, since it's the 21st, just a swift-ish 3.32 miles for me tonight.

    YTD: 114.29 miles.
  • Thanks Nell, tried a couple of times before and usually get to about the 20th. Time is quite often the deciding factor. I'm taking the easier often of kilometers but the last week of February still involves running 175 kilometers.
  • TTTT ✭✭✭
Harmander Washington is on my list, my very long, and ever increasing list!

DR that sounds like a challenge, I can see why you choose February and km.

David you are very close to that first 100. MrMr2 I am not in shorts outside 'up here' till about June.

Quick run on the treadmill (again!).

    YTD: 111.07
  • I must say, if Chicago is able to go ahead in October, I will be much happier going to America knowing Biden is in charge. I didn't really want to go to the US under Trump.

Harmander, I'm sorry you are struggling but take it easy eh? You don't want to end up with long Covid. Take care.

I was going to do a fast 5K sandwich today but it was too frosty and slippery. I did the 3 mile warm-up to get me to the loop I was going to use but the surface there wasn't good (the regular concrete paving stones were all fine, but any place that had blacktop path - asphalt I suppose - was slippery, and the loop has this stuff. So I decided against it and jogged back home again. 6 miles, but not really want I intended. Oh well.

    YTD: 162
  • Run streak day 23, quick run after work before friends coming round for a pool day and dinner. Only 2.63 miles

    YTD 119.39 miles

  • Dubai, you may be right about Biden's drafted speech compared with Trump's oratory skills but I was impressed with Amanda Gorman's The Hill we climb poem - not just because shenearly spelled her name to sound similar to mine but the mention of 'hill' - I used to love climbing hills and trained Fauja Singh solely on hills - incidentally, Bollywood are adapting this autobiography Turbaned Tornado) to biopic soon and as his coach I have been approached to assist. Have even been asked to suggest who could play my role.

Isn't streaking banned? Well done on getting away with it for 23 days.  lol

    Thanks Cal and Nell

TT I had to politely decline the offers of running Washington from some sports/athletics journalists for the past four years - politely because I did not know their political hue and I try to not burn bridges - plus I feel that politics and sports should not mix (wherever possible).

If COVID did not happen in the world, I estimate I would have been very close to 200 marathons by now.

I managed a slow walking lap of my garden today - there were days when I did 1000 in a day last year.  Small steps.

I did not know I had so many friends looking out for me out there - my wife popped into the chemist today for something and the pharmacist gave her some mixture for my cough that she had heard I had on the grapevine - I used to know the pharmacist first husband from school - sadly he died 20 years ago and then I trained the pharmacist to run 10ks - so glad she didn't hate me for it because she regularly refers people to our club and me to get them motivated.

    Good running everyone.
  • Bollywood calling sounds very exciting Harmander, stories of this sort need to be told, shame it's rarely covered in the mainstream.
Got out for a nice 5 miler at lunchtime...running back a few guys came out of the shop and were walking on the pavement, so I moved onto the road to give them space...guy in an Audi coming towards me refused to move onto the EMPTY other side of the road...Ass hole in car motioned to me that I should move...not often I hit a car...felt much better afterwards.

This thread is buzzing! Good reports coming from all quarters.
Little Nell... so agree with the 'finding out' aspect of running challenges. Body and mind are amazing.
Harmander... your life seems to go from one story to another. Good to see you considering future events!!!
Dubai... doing well with your streak; are you going to run it straight into February's challenge? Have never encountered so many challenges. Feeling like I'm the odd one out.
David... good to see your ReD going well.
Cal... Ice in London?...very wise to avoid it!
Hobie... good to see you back...and taking on the vehicles! Most drivers seem to understand why I'm running in the road, and I always acknowledge them. But the occasional one doesn't seem to get the picture.

Yesterday was an unscheduled rest day due to a foot twinge that gradually worked its way up the shin bone, causing me to hobble for the whole day. Possibly a 'nervy' thing as I have been getting the occasional 'electric shock' type of experience in my toes. Just a split second but takes my breath away! Today? All seems normal again and I enjoyed a steady 10 mile run (in 100 minutes). Happy. (Wife and I have jabs due on Sunday.)

    YTD: 140' .
  • MrM2, hoping to keep it going all year!

Ras al Khaimah half marathon signed up for, being run in waves and a requirement to wear a mask for the first 500m. Several fast (sub hour male runners) and female runners Gerda Steyn and Sara Hall taking part.

    4.36 miles

    YTD 123.75 miles

  • Good progress, Harmander. Do you have an agent?  :D
Dubai, that sounds exciting - when is it?
MrM2 - good you don't have the pain today - that sounds nasty.
Hobie, Audi drivers are well known to be jerks. I'm sure there must be some nice ones, but there's definitely a rep.

I left it until midday to go out today so I didn't have to deal with ice (there's a puddle on the flat roof outside my window and it was frozen this morning so I wasn't taking any chances. Unfortunately that meant I did have to deal with people as there were a lot out and about, what with it being a Saturday lunchtime.
I did three miles winding up my pace then another three (well, another 5K) at tempo pace, and I was quite pleased I was able to do that what with my various niggles and the less than ideal conditions.

Dubai...That IS a challenge. All the best for RAK. I would love to run there again.
Cal... Well done for mixing up the paces today. I had ideas of a progression 6' for the return part of my run but found that I only had one gear! Frustrating when that happens, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Joined the crowds along the seafront this afternoon (Unfortunately they were not all going my way...or going anywhere! and the dogs were as 'free-range' as ever!) Wore a mask for most of the run (first time on a run).
16' mainly on the prom. but included piers and chines. (Just about made my 10 min/mile target pace for the run ending up at 10:02.)

    YTD: 156' .
  • Not much fun wearing a face whilst running MrM2 eh? I use a buff and pull it up if I see anyone.

I thought UK was in lockdown but there are lots of people out and about?

Cal, half is on the 19 Feb.
  • Great wee run today (drivers all being lovely).😇. Sun was shining and the view across the bay to snow covered hills in N Wales was pretty.
Only 20 miles this week compared to last weeks 70.
    155 miles YTD
  • Dubai - people are allowed out for exercise and essential shopping. So lots of people out for a walk or walking dogs and whatnot.
  • Nice treadmill dedication, TT! It would be great of you ended up doing Washington at the same time as Harmander

So good to have a race for you to aim for, Dubai - great streaking too... my calcs make it that you'll run 406 km, or 252.28 miles, in that February challenge - flippin' 'eck! :astonished:

Lots of exciting news from you, Harmander - from garden exploration to film stardom - excellent! You could play yourself - a new career...

Glad you survived your man v car incident, Hobie! It's such a difference in this lockdown compared with the first one - I remember how polite the occasional car or white van driver was when I had to run in the road during lockdown 1... but now, as you found, the idiots are back to usual! Nice mileage total amassing for you there.

Oo - that foot thing sounds a bit weird, MrM2 but it does sound like it's better with those great runs! You're neck-and-neck with Hobie too! Good luck with the jabs.

Well done on managing some speed work in these difficult conditions under foot, Cal. Also well done on leading the way on the mileage front! Hope you do manage to do Chicago... it's a fab city, I loved it! The course is good - very runnable, if a teenny bit dull in places - the city really focusses on the marathon too (unlike NY, in my opinion... )

Funny coincidence given MrM2's and Dubai's comments - in my 4.04 miles on Friday night I ran with my buff covering my nose and mouth the whole time... and today's 5.07 miles I wore a mask for the whole run. The buff caused me to massively over-heat (I normally wear it only round my neck) but the mask worked really well and I'll be using that for the foreseeable... not least because one of my front crowns snapped off on Tuesday and now I have a big gap in my teeth - the mask is perfect to conceal this  I've now got a VERY pleasing mileage total...

    YTD: 123.40 miles (HA!)

  • Cal, just musing that lots of people out and about, maybe time to have a proper lockdown as the UK seems to be a mess with an unenviable death and infection rate.
  • senidMsenidM ✭✭✭
Dubai, your musings fairly on point, I run thru my local Country park, just full of peeps, not maintaining distance, gathering in clumps, all a bit odd all things considered (100K+ dead by end of Jan?)

Cal, saw  you mentioned KnackerCracker run (cancelled), just as a heads-up, Dr Robert is planning to hold the Trionium Leith Hill 1/2 in April, albeit with no wife-carrying race beforehand and no full english after :(, but is a cracking run if you like a big hill and lots of mud!

Nell, perhaps now is the time to join the Pirate Ship of Fools club, just need an eye-patch to go with the smile!! Bet that mileage pleased the inner nerd in you!

Had a lovely run this am, frozen ground, but no snow as yet, but meant I could run mud free. Have just bought a pair of goretex trail shoes, great for surface water and thick mud, just not sure if they're any good for deep water. Hobie, any thoughts? You like a bit of off-road, straight across the river type silliness!

    YTD 102.38
  • Oh I most definitely don't like mud, senidM, but thanks for the heads up.
Didn't manage a run today as I didn't want to risk slipping (very frosty when I woke up) but I did manage an 8 mile walk. Started snowing 4 miles in so the 4 miles back home were a lot slower, and I got pretty cold. Quite a lot of people out in it - several kids experiencing snow for the first time.
I wore a face covering for the entire walk but more to keep my face warm than anything.
  • Great running everyone!

Two runs to chip in since tuesday's 10k. A cut back week this week. A 3.5 mile loop to test my foot, and a 13.1 today.  Fell on the ice and bashed my knee up.  Learned my lesson there.

Stay safe all and get well anyone who is not at their best.

  • Heading nicely towards 100 LTT, nice running.
Well done on the 100 SenidM, I've never found anything keeps you dry in deep water and deep mud...except wellies...I've always just gone with jumping in the first puddle I see to get it over with...feet warm up surprisingly quickly even after icy water.
Lovely moonlit run tonight...bit of snow still in the fields.

LintonTT... so easy to fall where there's even a hint of ice/frost. Hope you are OK.
Cal... frost and snow in London...what's happening?
senidM... frozen ground? Take care. Congrats on passing 100'.
Little Nell...sorry about the tooth issue. Glad the mask helped. I found the main benefit of wearing a mask was that I could breathe more freely; nose and mouth rather than 'in through the nose and out through the mouth'.

Thought that today would be a rest day...until mid-afternoon. The sun insisted on shining, so I decided a 6' 'recovery' run would be good after yesterday's 16. But, it wasn't 'recovery' and it wasn't 6'. I was very comfortable with the 8', coming in under 80 minutes. Rest day tomorrow?

    YTD: 164' .
  • Top running guys. Three figures and still a week left in january👍👍I’m glad it’s not a race😁. Running in the Woods atm, 4 times a week no electonics and really enjoying it. I’ll start to fokus on distance later.
Hernander, sounds rough, seen a lot of patients recover then go under again so take it slowly, your lungs could have taken a real good beating.
Got my second vaccination last tuesday and it knocked the stuffing out of me.
    Keep it up guys.

    Ytd: 35,7.
  • Evenin' all!

That's a very fair observation, Dubai... unfortunately, I think it would be akin to trying to put toothpaste back in the tube as most people simply won't comply. It's very frustrating!

Hahaha... you know me so well, senidM - the total was very nice and, as a Cornish maid, I do feel very piratical  Congrats on passing 100 miles! Have to agree with Hobie re: waterproof footwear - get feet wet early on as that gives them plenty of time to warm up through the rest of the run.

I know what you mean about getting cold if you're moving slower, Cal. Hopefully you'll be able to get back to running before long - our snow and ice has thawed and it seems like the south are a day or so behind us folks in the north and and midlands so yours should clear soon too.

On no LTT!!! :anguished: Sorry to hear you took a terrible tumble... hope your knee recovers quickly. Still a nice total amassing for you though.

Your run sounds lovely, Hobie - no residual fatigue from your ultra, I take it?

MrM2 - you've clearly taken over the "Harmander role" of crazy interpretations of rest/short runs! Nice pace and great total mileage so far.

Good to hear from you razdaz - well done on your regular running. Running in the woods sounds lovely... I'm very jealous as I'd normally be running in woods regularly too - but I typically drive there so I'm being good and only running locally at the moment.

An evening run for me today, with the middle section on near-by trails. Wore trail shoes but it was actually fine under foot and I could have worn normal road shoes. As required for RtS, did 6.09 miles... nice and easy as all my running is at a slow/easy pace to make sure I can complete all the runs required this month. Will be back to varied paces next month!

    YTD: 129.49 miles.

Nell: I'll update my running late, but you mentioned your damaged crown. If you need a dentist in central Manchester I can recommend someone. I use this term seriously, he's a brilliant partictioner.
  • Afternoon,

Dubai, The run till you drop challenge is certainly a test, the last week will be tough. Nice work with the streak, I think I may get through Jan/Feb then we shall see.

Nell, Still going well, nearly there  :D

Harmander, hope you are still improving, the big screen and stardom, oh how exciting!

MrM2, Sounds like you were playing dodgem's, great long run.

LintonTT, Hope you are okay and no lasting damage, ice is quite frankly a pain in the arse now.

I have still been getting out every day and plan to do Nell's RtS in February to keep me out and about (but only in km's) I have produced the said spreadsheet and  with a few adjustments to increase the distance on the very small days, it currently stands at 164.4km or just over 100 miles.

I did go out for a nice run Saturday in the late afternoon which is unusual, it was one of those runs which was very enjoyable and I could have gone on much longer, but tea was calling.

    22.01 - 3.25
    23.01 - 3.25 + 7.50
    24.01 - 3.25
    25.01 - 3.25 + 6.25 (Pretty cold this morning)

    YTD = 123.50
  • I did manage to get out for a cautious run today - just 5 miles as I left it to midday and was mindful I had to get back in good time to eat before I got my flu shot this afternoon. Give you peeps a chance to catch up anyway.

    YTD: 173

  • Donnie
    - that's really kind of you! I managed to get an appointment at my usual dentist and he arranged rush job for a local specialist to make a temporary plate. He said it would be ready tomorrow - but I just found I had a missed call from him and it was ready to collect today. Just need to sort out getting it fitted now. Thank you so much for your kind offer though!

Yay, David - great to hear you're going to Run the Sum in February! It's an interesting undertaking, but you'll be well prepared given your RED in January. So nearly a nice tidy total for you too - just 0.1 miles too much!

Well done on your tentative run today, Cal - I think we need you to have a few more rest days to let us catch you up!   Hope the flu jab went OK.

A nice, but faster than intended, 7.27 miles for me this afternoon. I was running nice and easy until someone overtook me at about 6.5 miles, which was like a red rag to a bull and I steamed off after him - making the seventh mile the fastest of all *DOH*!

    YTD: 136.76 miles.
  • Donnie2Donnie2 ✭✭✭
Harmander: hope the recovery is going well. Slow and steady wins the race.

Dubai and Dave: long may your streaks continue.

Nell: hope you're back with a winning smile.

Three runs since last posting, 9.2, 5.0 and 6.1 making a Ytd of 98.9.

Thinking about up coming events, I've got the Sheffield HM held over from 2020 in March which is surely a non starter although nothing yet from the organisers and the Boston (Lincolnshire) marathon in April which Im predicting will go ahead.
