20 miles on a treadmill?? Unless you're on an oilrig somewhere, why don't you do your long runs outside ('like a proper runner' I'm tempted to add - go on, hate me!)
i mix and match my training and shorter runs do on the treadmill but I make it so that for 5 mins I am doing 8.0kmph at say 5% gradient and then 5 mins at 9.5 at 1% gradient - just to kill some time and so it isnt always the same.
Benz, nothing personal, honestly! But 20 miles!! Btw, little story especially for you - when I was a student and in hospital which was located opposite the house where the best party in the world was happening and I was feeling dead sorry for myself, my friends turned up with a gin & tonic for me concealed in a tupperware container. Gin never tasted so good.
cardiff, freaky, and ive gotta leave for my next jos but my heart is in swansea(sob)
Laura, i knew id done a maathon when i didnt really want the tin of gin hubby brought me after I just needed to sit down, for 3 weeks!!
ive only got to outside running recently pre marathon, still sensitive not exactly sylph-like you see Pix, gym no good unless its close Lunchtime running for you, tell bitch your doctor has ordered it!!
I don't think anyone really enjoys the treadmill, listen to some music, or get some of those 'teach yourself French' tapes, and do something usefull with the time.
What about...mmm...if the gym is quiet and the treadmills not really used, to try and run 1K on each treadmill. This will be good for speed training, and if your gym has 15 treadmills like mine, you can even do your long run that way. It will only be a few minutes on each treamill and will add some excitement to the dreadfull boredom of the treadmill. Who cares what people think, we are runners and in our own little runners world ;-)
Intervals do tend to make the time go by, make you work and help relieve boredom. Lots of music to singalong to helps me (underground overground...), one amusing thing to try with music is to see if you can clap hands or click your fingers in time with the music, I guarantee it won't be the same beat that you're running to. See if you can do it without falling off. Alternatively, console yourself that you're not doing 100 miles on a track.....
I did a few long runs on the treadmill last spring thanks to horrible weather. I entertained myself watching people around me, seeing how long they lasted. William Sichel who was 3rd in the 100 mile race last weekend is planning an attempt at the world 24 hour treadmill record next month.
I hate the treadmill but when its too icy to run or the weather's just stinking awful there would appear to be little option. Interval training will provide some variety and a good workout but a long run surely will just leave you brain dead. I don't think I could do more than about 30 mins on the treadmill at the same pace. Bring back the heatwave!
Would love to have music blaring in my ears, but one perspires lot and the earphones get uncomfortable. The music in my local gym - Leyton Leisure Centre - is also too soft. I do understand that they don't want to dusturb anyone else though.
Running against other runners. No can do. I've checked them out. Like Sunday I did my traing at 5 min/k. That is faster than he average person can run and for how long??
Also jumping from treadmill to treasdmill is not an option cause it'll just break your rhythm and you've gotta get back to speed as well.
Maybe the best is to think of my next reply on the forum LOL.
I really dislike treadmill running! I won't do it unless there really is absolutely no other option - if I can't run outside because the weather conditions are dangerous, I'd rather go swim training in a pool or ride my home trainer in front of a good video. Anything rather than that treadmill.
1) Guess stuff - like which treadmill will be the next used, or who will get off another treadmill first.
2) Needs co-operation, but get someone to chat to you maybe, at least for quick bursts.
Agree about the intervals idea - if you go half a kph either side of your intended speed, it breaks things up into more mentally manageable 2 minute chunks, while keeping the overall speed the same.

Cmon pix, gyms have bars, and so there is an incentive
But 20 miles!!
