Who's used RyanAir to take their bikes abroad?

Going on hols in a few days time, was going to be a climbing holiday but we've been doing too much cycling and not enough climbing this year so are thinking of changing our plans...

We're flying with Ryanair and I've heard a few bike-related horror stories (pre-booked bikes being refused, etc.) but wondered if these were true - need to find out before we book our babies on ...

Um, and if we put two very light bikes into one box, could we get away with this as being one bicycle ...?

What experience have people had?

  • Lizzyb, ive taken my bike twice with Ryanair and the first time i got away without paying at all. The second time i had to pay £15 on the wayout and nothing on the return journey.

Had no problems with damage though.

I would put both bikes in the same bikebox if you could and just say its full of bike bits?!
  • will they x-ray it?
  • It'll be X-rayed, but Ryanair won't be doing the X-raying. Airport Security will do that, I doubt they'd grass up anyone to Ryanair.

Lets hope that the x-raying people don't know anything about bikes ... two sets of completely incompatable Campag components!
  • You should be booked for having Campag components! :)
  • hey JLK how goes?

when are you going over to Austria? Are we meeting up for beers after the rave?
  • race, even
  • Im a No No now for Austria as some Drunken dick drove in to our car at 60mph whilst we were waiting at a junction. Since then ive been struggling with lower back pain which has reduced me to ranning races and short Tri's.

I could probably complete the race though my aim for my next ironman was a fast time and now i think id be lucky to go under 10hrs and my aim was close to 9.

Shame but there's always next season or i may risk it closer to home at the Longest Day?!
  • Thats Running races not Ranning!!
  • tough luck, sorry to hear that
  • No worries! could have been much worse so im not to bothered.
  • Lizzy the problem I had was due to the fact that Ryanair suddenly woke up to the fact that with one flight a day to Klagnefurt and an ironman going on there people might just want to travel with bikes so they put me on a different flight, I have paid £30 to have mine carried, but I had on the original flight and it didn't stop them titting around so I am keeping my fingers crossed that they don't renege on this deal, we shall see.
  • Oi JLK Whats wrong with Campag?
Sorry to hear about the accident- Not sure I would be so calm about it.

    Thanks everyone!

Yeah, what's wrong with Campag? All that beautiful shiny aluminium, and lovely Italian styling...

  • There is nothing wrong with it realy, its just if you have to work with it or fit anything it is a real pain. Campag tools are useless.

I could name a number of things with regards to getting the kit onto a bike though once its on and working then the equipment is fine.
  • I get a man in for my adjustments, so to speak.
