Step back or easy weeks

Some marathon schedules (for novices) include easier 'step-back' weeks every 3 or 4 weeks. Are these valuable or just a wasted opportunity?

I'm training for my first marathon in September, and am worried about not doing enough training - although I do know that rest is important too.

Any advice from more experienced runners is much appreciated!

  • some 'stepping back' is definitely worth it, if you are training hard the rest of the time

but people usually are forced to take breaks due to family or work committments or illness or injury niggles. i'd say be flexible here - i.e. if you have to take a few days off, call that your step back week and amend your programme accordingly
  • yes, defo play it by ear.

If you are feeling more and more knackered each run you go out on, there is a good chance you will benefit from a little rest or some easy running.

  • Thanks for the advice (Yes, it is still me, I just changed my name to reflect current state!).

Like you suggest, I'll see how it goes and not be afraid to back off occasionally.
